Rabbi Ethan Tucker - stepson of Joe Lieberman reveals he will be voting Obama

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/22/us/politics/22jewish.html?hp=&pagewanted=print

<snip>

Younger Jews have grown up in diverse settings and are therefore less likely to be troubled by Mr. Obama’s associations than their elders, said Rabbi Ethan Tucker, 32, co-founder of a Jewish learning organization in Manhattan and the stepson of Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut. Rabbi Tucker said he had given money to Mr. Obama and would vote for him in the fall. “If association was the litmus test of identity, everyone would be a hopeless mishmash of confusion, or you’d have no friends,“ he said.

Senator Lieberman is expected to spend plenty of time in front of Jewish audiences, in Florida and elsewhere. A Democrat turned independent, an Orthodox Jew and one of Mr. McCain’s closest friends, Mr. Lieberman will promote Mr. McCain’s strong national security résumé and centrist stances.

2. Not really a surprise. My favorite example of how little influence family members
have on each other re political preferences is George McGovern who said that after he endorsed Hillary (he has now reversed that) all of his kids (4) and grandkids (10) joined the Obama campaign. :)

If McGovern wouldn't have endorsed so early, he probably would have followed the pattern of this election season - kids influencing their parents - I know it has been mentioned in the Obama endorsements by Caroline Kennedy, Claire McCaskill, Bob Casey, and Maria Shriver. I'm sure there are more. Those are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

Pat Buchanan blamed Lieberman for McCain's pastor problem. Said that Lieberman is mixed up with these pastors that AIPAC associates with and brought them to McCain. It was a good chuckle to be had. I think the Lieberpastor controversy should have been held over for a month or two longer before being introduced.

6. Our local talk radio host, Jay Marvin, wrote to the times about this article
Jay has broadcast from Chicago as well as Colorado in the past. Right now he's on in the mornings on KKZN. And he's hopping mad about what he sees as the attempt to split Jews from supporting Obama. This morning he said that he wrote to the Times editor about this article. He sees it as part of the effort to but a divide between African Americans and Jews to defeat Obama. he doesn't expect his letter to be published.

This morning's program has been dedicated to exploring the commonality of inexperience between Jews and African Americans in the USA. Among other issues, they discussed how Jewish people were also lynched in America. Probably a little known fact not taught in history classes.

He interviewed Ishmael Reed for about a 1/2 hour and gave Reed all sorts of time to share his thoughts. Various of his interviews are available at the station web site. http://www.am760.net/pages/JayMarvin.html
