Anyone in any party who uses the term Holocaust lightly should have to view these and 10,000 other images.

It is unforgivable.

As painful as it is to look at those pictures, we must never forget.

ETA: And I think that is something we can ALL agree on. I read the post that brought up the "holocaust" comment. But I'm sure that person does not speak for all, or even most, and perhaps even any Clinton supporters. That was really beyond the pale.

we shouldnt compare the systematic murder of millions of jews to the systematic slaughter of hundreds of millions of animals for consumption. We aren't animals we are the chosen men made in God's image. so PETA is wrong.

16. I'm not sure if you're trying to be sarcastic, or not.
I disagree with you about that "chosen men made in God's image" gibberish. I actually think that we're primates that evolved to be omnivorous, and I look around in nature and I don't think that there's anything intrinsically wrong or "evil" about meat eating.

Personally, I support sustainable, free range, as cruelty free as possible animal use (PETA doesn't) but as someone with relatives who died in the camps you're fucking A I also take offense at any sort of drawing of ethical equivalence between Jews in Auschwitz and chickens on their way to Colonel Sanders.

Edited on Tue May-20-08 09:03 PM by Barrymores Ghost
First of all, take a breath.

Secondly, I'm not trying to invalidate your point, although I think if you think about it, you'd agree that the barbarous living/dying conditions of factory-raised and slaughtered chickens or cattle or the process by which foie gras or milk-fed veal are derived is not alleviated by your choice of consuming free-range or organically-raised anything. I eat meat and dairy too. But I also realize that entire rain forests are being razed and burned for pasture land. Global warming is enhanced by the methane produced by grazing cows. Sentient animals are maimed and tortured with minimal thought given to the nature of their experience. And have you ever been inside of a slaughterhouse?

"Holocaust?" No, not my preferred word choice. But I can understand their outrage.

My point is, PETA's argument is not the same as the shameful claim of the Hillary supporters who prompted the OP. If you could reserve at least one "fuck you" for that crowd, and offer, say, a "go to hell, assclowns" to PETA, that might be a bit more balanced of a response, IMHO.

But, hey, free country.

Peace.

61. And the truth is, this ground has been covered here previously, ad nauseum.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 09:37 PM by impeachdubya
What can I say? Maybe I'm nostalgic for the old DU. ;-)

As I said upthread; I believe in free range farming as cruelty-free as possible. I don't eat red meat, the poultry and fish I eat is as sustainable, etc. as possible.

Do I understand the PETA folks' "outrage"? Yes, I do. I lived with animal rights activists for a year in college. I understand perhaps a little too well.. I understand that, in many cases, it comes from an ideological single-minded blindness that is like nothing so much as the fundamentalists who worry incessantly about the "rights" of fertilized eggs as they lobby to pass laws controlling the bodies of consenting adult humans. If someone really thinks that sick kids should die so that rats in labs can live, well, maybe they're philosophically consistent, but to me, they're also something of an asshole.

Should people be compassionate to animals? Yes, I think they should, as much as possible. But I also think that there isn't a whole helluva lot of comparison between the sentience of a chicken and a human. Drawing a moral equivalence between Jews in Auschwitz and Chickens at KFC is deeply offensive, IMHO.

Believe me, I think the Hillary supporters talking "Holocaust"... well, words cannot convey the ludicrousness of that particular quote. Look elsewhere in GDP and you'll find me all over it. But, to be fair, the PETA thing with the holocaust was an official ad campaign.. with Hillary, it's the ever-increasing derangement of her nuttier holdouts. The PETA thing, at the time, pissed me off fairly heavily. So I freely admit, it's hard for me to get past a thread directly on the subject without bringing it up.

But I'm done; as much as I could use a break from the Hillary Histrionics, I have no real desire to open up a PETA/MEAT-A front.

Peace to you, too.

Had there been a graphic warning, I would not have looked. Get it?

I had my fill of those pictures when I was a teenager... my best friend's father, Bert Bochove, assisted in getting many Jews out of Europe during the war. I got my fill of those stories first hand, thank you very much. It's not something I'm likely to forget... or make little of for that matter.

Google his name and you'll get a lot of great stories about and from him. He's a real hero.

34. My childhood babysitter was liberated from Buchenwald...
...when she was a teenager, and she served as a German translator for the U.S. Army for the next three years. The guards at the camp broke both of her arms over a stack of bricks and dashed a small child's head against the wall right beside her when she wouldn't tell them who was sneaking food into the barracks. I heard plenty of first-hand stories myself, and read her book.

Sorry, I'm not impugning your sensitivity to the horrific plight of the European Jews from 1930 - 1945. Just remarking on what I felt was an odd word choice.

Edited on Tue May-20-08 08:30 PM by Juniperx
The point I was making... it would be nice if DUers gave a "graphic picture" warning so that those of us who cannot, for whatever fucking reason, literally cannot see such things without throwing up, can avoid seeing those pictures.

That does NOT mean any of us with weak stomachs don't understand and agree that the Holocaust was a horrible thing and it should not be taken lightly by anyone.

Perhaps you cannot see reality from your lofty high horse.

:eyes:

Just because you are so "tough" doesn't mean there aren't others like myself who are empathetic to a fault and quite literally become physically ill on behalf of those who are depicted in such horrific pictures.

Understand and agree, yes we can. But it seems strange to me that some in DU don't seem to feel any moral outrage -- or at least can't be called upon to muster up any visible evidence of it -- over what precipitated the OP's post to begin with.

If that's "beside the point," well, I'll just leave it at this: the view from up here is fine, although I can see quite a number of buried heads with asses waving in the air.

I would have. Thankfully, I did not.

Unlike big ol' tough and manly you, I'm empathetic to a fault. When I see those pictures I become physically ill on behalf of those people. I know I'm not the only one here who feels that way.

Now, if you will excuse me, I'll go throw my dinner in the trash, have a lie-down, and try not to throw up.

Wow. The plot just gets thicker and thicker.

Well, given your self-purported expertise on the subject, I guess next time you read the phrase "real holocaust," your reflexive reaction won't be to click on the link and scroll down, hoping to figure out what was meant by the original post.

76. That's your interpretation of what I said.
The reality is, most people who stoop to cheapening the meaning of the word "Holocaust" by applying it to Hillary Clinton's failed candidacy won't bother with discussion. They won't get past the first sentence in a post. But a picture, as they say...

Sorry you lost your lunch. That wasn't my fault. But I steadfastly defend Forkboy's post, the format of it, and the reason behind it. A subject-line disclaimer, as you would have demanded, would only have discouraged those who don't wish to have their belief systems challenged from even opening the post to begin with.

I understand you don't see it that way. C'est la vie, c'est la guerre.

Edited on Tue May-20-08 08:41 PM by beezlebum
one weak stomached DUer sees a thread entitled "the real holocaust," said weak stomached DUer might be a tad more hesitant to click on it, had it not been invoked where it certainly did not belong by certain groups and/or individuals wishing to paint their cause as genuinely martyred and victimized in such a manner- very much akin to valor theft and the lynching bile.

REAL HOLOCAUST- naturally, so much as discussion on the matter ought to be enough to sink a few solemn hearts and minds, and if it's imagery that does it to you, then beware when you see such wording.

edit to add: no snarkitude is to be read into my post- respectfully, peace.

51. Juniper
My intent was for people to see these pictures with the full shock of what happened. I know the pictures are painful for a lot of people, but that's all the more reason why I wanted people who use the word so easily to be reminded of what they are equating themselves with. Had I put the warning there then many people would have just skipped by it. It's also why I didn't use a capital "H" in holocaust.

I am sorry it's hurt you, but I'd rather people just looked and thought about it, and maybe open the eyes of a few that have forgotten or never learned in the first place, and I felt that was a good way to do it.

Peace

The photos make me feel sick. Like you, I find them shocking and disturbing, even though I have seen them before many times.

Nevertheless, since members of my family were exterminated by the Nazis (and Stalinists), I want these photos to never be forgotten, and therefore support Forkboy's effort.

FYI, I did not need to go with my classmates to a concentration camp, to go inside a gas chamber, to go inside an oven, to watch films of executions and horrendous experiements displayed at Dachau, but I did it anyway, as painful as it was.

I want others to experience my shock and pain so this will NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!

72. I agree
But I think we all know what to expect when we walk into the Simon Wiesenthal Center, or Auschwitz, or any other place showing that particular area of human history.

I didn't need to go to any of these places either... I have actually donated historical personal documents to the Simon Wiesenthal efforts... personal concentration camp testimonies left to my grandmother by friends who trusted her to do the right thing. As her executrix, I did the right thing on her behalf. I grew up being best friends with a bona-fide hero who smuggled Jews out of Europe... he has a memorial in Israel. These atrocities were glossed over in school, so I was horribly shocked to learn these things at a tender age. The pictures are burned into my memory.

I don't like thrusting stuff upon people. I don't think it's fair, and I think it could backfire with a lot of people.

28. I respectfully disagree.
It's horrible, yes...but it's reality, and people should get a real sense of just how shocking this reality is and was -- and shouldn't have it candy-coated or pre-chewed for easier swallowing and digestion. The brutality of these images should not be diluted, either by disclaimers or soft-focus or apologies for the apparent and sad need to remind people that "The Holocaust" is not some cheap campaign rallying cry for sore losers.

I'm sure that the latter example does not apply to you, but again, "real Holocaust" means only one thing: death and brutality and ugliness and the very worst that mankind is capable of.

If people don't know what they're walking into, let them figure it out on their own.

36. When you can point me to your remarks in DU that are as strident and condemning...
..against the idiocy and outrage perpetrated by those lunatics in Hillary's Sore Losers Brigade who referred to her "treatment by the MSM" as a "misogynistic Holocaust," then you can lecture me on respect for sensitivity and call me a bully until the cows come home.

My grandfather survived Auschwitz. It's fucking amazing. His story is recorded for the Shoah.

60. MESSAGE TO MODS: PLEASE PUT A CAUTION IN THE TITLE...
I get the OP's point, but there really needs to be a caution in the thread title, whether or not the OP thread starter understands why this is important.
