Radio Lady: Hillary Clinton has been verbally lynched and some of the perpetrators are right here.
Edited on Sun May-11-08 01:49 PM by Radio_Lady
Hillary Clinton has been bled, drawn, and quartered... even assailed for her clothing.

I used the word "LYNCHED" last night on the DU. I'm changing that to VERBALLY LYNCHED and sticking to it. In order to defeat a candidate, the populace has come up with the most disagreeable and divisive arguments one could ever imagine. To repeat what I said in another thread, I hope the people here will agree with me that verbal lynching of Hillary Clinton has been mortifying to watch.

This goes right to the top of the journals of some of the best read DUers. People whom I believed had maintained their composure and their honest perception -- have been drawn in and have now exhibited about the most disgusting repartee I could imagine. I don't have to go to the Right Wing sites. We have the worst possible behavior -- short of REALLY LYNCHING -- either or both of them.

I thought former presidential races were ugly, but this is BY FAR the ugliest I have ever seen. If we were all in a room together, would people act this way, and call EITHER of the two frazzled participants on the things that were mentioned here over the months?

The Democratic Underground has only served to underscore the ugliness. I'm not sure what could have been done to ameliorate this race, but it's the first race I've viewed as a on-line participant. 2004 was pleasant compared to this.

Good luck to you, DU. Eventually, I will be uncoupled from this election -- and despite all of the good, understanding, and thoughtful people here, I am maintaining a reasonable distance from this place until after the summer.

Cordially,

Radio Lady in Oregon

1. I am not going to disagree with the sentiment that Senator Clinton
has been unfairly attacked at times. But just was when people say "verbally raped," I think it is offensive to use a term which has a very specfic, horrific, historic meaning in this way.

200. "White Americans" is a racist comment?
But Mrs. Obama saying early in the campaign that Black Americans would "come home" wasn't? Now that they have "come home" and are voting in a virtual block, just what is that?

Remember when the GOP and the MSM, through the use of half truths and partial statements, turned Gore into a serial liar and exaggerator? Remember when Kerry was turned into a war criminal? And Max Cleland into a traitor? Remember those things? Now, by cherry picking words and phrases and extrapolating out of context, the Clintons have been turned into racists - by Democrats. I think you know this isn't true, but you're willing to borrow the racist charges to bolster your own candidate. Apparently, Senator Obama can't be good unless Senator Clinton is bad.
I wonder what admirable attribute of Sen. Obama's is going to be turned inside out and used against him. It should be interesting.

I was horrified at the phrasing and embarrassed enough to rewind and watch it three times. And I don't care how or upon what basis anyone wants to defend it, it SOUNDED as if they were equating hard work and working class values exclusively to white people.

I realize Hillary is running short of cash, but it can't be that expensive to hire an intern with some college to vet the speeches.

And I think you know it. However, people who said they were speaking for Black Americans told them she had said something insulting. For example, when she said that it took President Johnson and Martin Luther King together to push Civil Rights legislation through Congress, people who deemed themselves spokesmen started shrieking that they were insulted because Rev. King could not be referred to by a white person. And NOBODY told them they were full of crap. NOBODY told them that Rev. King belongs to all Americans. Now, THAT was insulting, and I haven't gotten over THAT!

Do you also remember when whites have pushed whites aside and refused to help them?

If Obama becomes POTUS, it will not be because of black Americans. The combined effort of Americans will put him there. The millions of Americans who are tired of the status quo.

I have black pride (a few other prides as well)but I feel it's an insult to assume my vote for Obama will be because of his African Father. BTW, I voted for John Edwards in our primary.

the supporters who are behind the "fucking whore", don't have a leg to stand on with the sexism charges. That's just the normal, everyday reference used for a woman. Got it. It's funny, not really, that I now view Obama fans in the same light I see hard-core Bush fans. They too sincerely(or not) believe their "leader" was the savior, though he too, did not have a background suggesting this to be true. Different clothes, same delusion. I keep wondering why it took so many supposedly intelligent people almost sixteen years to recognize the Clintons for the racists Obama fans percieve them to be, much less DU members who have been conversing with Hillary supporters for as many years, yet did not have the intelligence, nor wisdom to see the inherent racism in these people until now. That's because it didn't exist until Obama fans realized it would be their greatest weapon in this campaign. And they never stop reminding Clinton supporters every day, through their expressions of hatred, that they will not need their votes in the fall if Obama is the nominee. His fans, and the republicans who have set their own brand of racism, and disdain for anything liberal aside :sarcasm: will be more than adequate to defeat McCain in November. Thanks.

Here's from an AP story over the weekend:
"One of four remaining undeclared SC Superdelegates, Wilber Lee Jeffcoat, has declared for Obama. He cites Clinton’s recent “hardworking white people” comment as one of the factors in his decision."
So, you folks can argue all you want about whether the comment was racist, or how racist it was, but the people who are deciding this election didn't like it.

333. What's the difference between a lynching and a verbal lynching?

The answer is, in one of them, there is no lynching.

I realize it is meant metaphorically, and I suppose "lynching" is supposed to depict a mob-like action on a discussion board, meaning mostly that there are more people arguing for Obama than Clinton, and they are pretty strident about it.

This doesn't match your depiction-- which sounds more like a wrestling match. Perhaps a verbal full-nelson?

The idea of having Hillary Clinton as the presumptive nominee was highly flawed to begin with. The main problem was that a great many Democrats (that is to day, silent Democrats who didn't vote, who are now actually counted in the party) did not like the Bill Clinton presidency. Clinton won the first election with 42 percent of the vote. He won re-election mainly because Republicans put a poor candidate up against him: Bob Dole had lost his bid for the presidency three times already, and was older, not better in '96.

I've seen vile crap from some folks here who say they support one or the other remaining Dem candidates, but comments on DU do not win/lose elections.

And the word "lynching" used in the context of a political campaign, minimizes the horror of real lynchings where real people died. You know better than to use such a loaded word in this context, or at least I thought you did. If Hillary is not on the ticket, she gets to return to the Senate and her houses in Georgetown and Westchester and lives on to enjoy the millions she and Bill have amassed since they left the White House. Her life is far from over.

And you compare that to real lynchings that have occurred even within your lifetime? Really?

Clinton. They want her to lose her Senate seat and to be kicked out of the party. They hope that she is bankrupted by her campaign debts and that no one in the party or out comes up with a plan to pay off those debts. They want to make her a pariah in every way.

Anyone looking objectively at her Senate record, her hard hard work there, and the respect she has gained, even from Republicans, would know that she deserves better treatment than that. Whether you like it or not, this is lynch mob mentality.

that would be me and the members of my home. I am a wife, woman, mother, stepmother, grandmother and stepgrandmother. I have been a lifelong Democrat (except for a vote for Republican William Weld for Governor in Massachusetts a long time ago).

I have my own battle scars in this gender and racist fight. Believe it or not, my Judiaism raised a great deal of hostility. (Oh, perhaps I'll get the argument that Jewish is not a race. Tell that to the people who sent me pictures of myself with a large nose and dollars in my fists.) Ironically, I NEVER earned as much as the men who were doing the same job for the same numbers of hours I did it.

See my OP for the places that hired me and where I fought tooth and nail to be "the first" of my gender to do what I did.

Gratefully, the owners of the stations where I worked demanded more decorum and civility than the MSM today -- and although there were BRUTAL verbal fights, I'm glad I got to do what I've done.

Have you seen the Hillary cartoons posted here?

I can only hope that Hillary's life will be put back together in one piece and that Sen. Obama will be able to fight off the slurs and downright horrible comments and innuendoes from every corner. That will come about as soon as he is fully nominated and as surely as I am sitting here.

Ironically, Hillary's absence will only make it an even more creditable suggestion that there are vast RACIAL implications to this contest. I can foresee that the talk might then be WHITE AND BLACK, EXPERIENCE AND INEXPERIENCE, MILITARY RECORD OR NONE, OLD OR YOUNG. Perhaps GENDER will be absolved or resolved for a time (unless he chooses a female running mate -- or a lesbian --, or an older Hispanic with an Anglo name, or a guy who has military background but has never been elected for anything, or a guy who buys expensive haircuts whose wife wears the pants in the family but is dying of cancer, or a short guy with a funny name and a brilliant mind).

Because it sorts of make light of the victims. And "Jewish" is not a race. Just because nazis tried to make it so it doesn't mean we should follow suit. People sending you pictures of what a "typical" Jew looks like doesn't make it a typical Jew. It is just ignorance.

Radio_Lady, I know you are upset because Clinton is being put down by the media but she does have some blame in the way she is conducting her campaign. I am not saying that her downfall is completely her fault but in the argument between "the media destroying Senator Clinton" vs. "Clinton doing damage to herself", the truth lies.

Just my two cents.

A lynching of ONE man, or even hundreds over time, is different from six million massacred in a very few years. Not to mention the untold numbers of Gypsies, Catholics, Communists, and gays among the corpses in those vast mass graves.

Or perhaps it takes six million dead Jewish men, women, and children to equal the hanging of one black man in your mind. IS that your equivalent? Is that how you see it?

Is "lynching" another word we have to purge from the dictionary (along with 'fairytale,' 'tarbaby,' and how many others too delicate for Obama-loving ears?

418. Go and watch Obama's speech on race
watch it over and over agin and start the healing,

it's not about gender, and race, it's about the what the people need, who's best for the job
who's in touch with what America needs. No more games like a gas tax, we have been playing games far too long now
and its ended up in a WAR killing young americans Male and female, destroyed families on both sides of the plant,
we have a dollar thats not worth much, people are working longer hours, the ones who still have jobs, we need health care, we are all losing.
it's not about race, gender, and all the other things that you want to make it about. There have been many wrongs done all around the world for all people,
for example Haitian people have been dying a slow death for decades, people in africa the same, china, the middle east, europe and even here in america see how hard it is to make it out of the projects right here in urban cities in the US where people work long hours for little pay, and there kids go to school and barely learn how to read, the drop out rate is almost 50% ,
can you say PREDATORY LENDING. Almost every group has a story to tell, and the darker your skin tone, the deeper the scars

I know little or nothing about you. However, nowhere did I exclude you from being an American. The flag reference was just meant to signify that I'm not moving to another country or planning to vote Republican. I am going to stay and fight for what I believe in, with or without Hillary.

But, of course, the more I try to support and explain what I said, the more nitpickers like you jump on.

184. "True Americans?" When is an American not a "true American?" The RW often uses this phrase and I
always wonder what the user of such language considers the characteristics of an American who is not a "true American." Obviously in such context "American" is used to connote more than mere nationality. Logically, if someone refers to "true Americans" it suggests that he/she believes there are "false Americans." So what to you constitutes the divide between "true Americans" and "false Americans?"

Visiting hate sites, including Free Republic et al
Adopting the language of the right wing people
Saying that my family is "true Americans" and excluding your family or yourself
Changing your view about the 120,000 other people that you WOULD miss more than an iota SHOULD they leave

Here's something you might remember:

Just because I don't believe something you DO believe -- it does not mean that I don't believe ANYTHING you believe.

Just common logic, which is missing from about 3/4 of the posts on this forum today.

Somebody on the thread got it right... just a vain attempt at humor. Maybe mixed with some true dislike of Don Imus -- can't stand the guy for many of the same reasons I made that distasteful comment.

Too bad you weren't at the Washington County Democratic dinner last night, while I supported Obama against some hick who gave every wrong reason for Hillary's election. It was something like "maybe Bill will be able to knock some sense into her" with a wonderful variable like SPOUSAL ABUSE. He was a Bill Clinton supporter, mainly because the man wanted the super-sexuality he ascribed to Bill because of what... money? power? I have no cotton-pickin', chicken-pluckin' idea. (I did grow up in the South, son.)

Guess it's all in what you call debating style.

Nothing really profound. Right now, I'm trying to consider what to call Sen. Obama on this site -- BO doesn't make it. (Guess I'm revealing my age and a product we used to call MUM -- a deodorant -- that used "BODY ODOR" for those initials.)

Thanks for your comments and you can score me whatever you want on previous archival posts.

That does NOT mean that we are the only "true Americans" or that we will not vote for Sen. Obama, should he win the race. We are a pledged couple (my husband is an elected committeeperson with the Washington County Democrats). We are hoping to defeat Sen. Edited on Sun May-11-08 02:40 PM by Radio_Lady
-- moderated by its own people -- and called the Democratic Underground -- would achieve a higher purpose.

You don't have to tell me about ugly campaigns. My Jewish father was deeply involved in local Florida politics. I started passing out leaflets when I was eight years old (1947-48). I worked for a governor candidate when I was 13, then for Senators George Smathers and Sen. Claude Pepper. I covered the 1972 Florida primary for CBS and NBC as a journalism stringer. I was on the air at WEEI the day that Gov. Wallace was shot in a parking lot in Maryland. Did radio talk all though Watergate, the impeachment hearings, and the resignation.

This is worse.

It's fast. It's anonymous. It's MUCH uglier, IMHO. What we call journalism is slanted beyond belief. I don't have to convince you because you know what you know.

The people are getting to broadcast, Radio Lady, without as much censorship as in the past. A good thing, don't you think?

I've been reading the posts at DU since 2004. IMO the mods and admins generally do a good job of refereeing in these volatile times.
 DU

But that having been said, thank you Radio Lady --for adding your voice here and being brave enough to take the flak. I don't agree with your perspective on Hillary. However I am interested in the phenomenon of women (esp older professional women such as yourself) who have supported her through thick and thin. Despite her negatives and personal flaws, there is a strong identification with her struggle and her candidacy that cannot be denied. This has come out as a result of her campaign and I think is one of the benefits of her candidacy. At this point there must be something very strong behind her appeal. Those of us who've never supported her need to recognize that at least.

 Radio Lady for your perspective, even though I couldn't ever share it

320. Don't agree, I feel ashamed FOR them. They are taking the office of POTUS and bringing it to a new
LOW. On DU I've seen both sides get really slammed in a very harsh way - BUT - we are people that have passion and a thing called FREEDOM OF SPEECH. So we use it. Not always wisely, but I like to skim. Skimming is ignoring the opinions that you don't like and looking for the material that you are interested in. So that is what I do, I skim. I don't care what people say, if I don't like what I see I just skip them. It really is very easy and it keeps me "up" on some of the opposing sides thoughts. I don't use the "alert" button, nor do I use the "ignore" button. I want to see the group in its entirety, not censored. Too bad people just cannot accept others thought and or opinions and just seek what it is that they need. My "skimming" has gone more quickly lately, because I see more posts that don't interest me. (such as possibly bashing my candidate of choice) It really is easy to do, meanwhile you can take the temperature of a sample crowd.

As far as "poor" HRC, well I do feel for her, she has embarrassed herself and this country and Bill has embarrassed the office of POTUS. ----- I used to be extremely passionate supporters of theirs to. So there is a personal disappointment for me.

24. its the ugly behavior of the verbal lynching of HRC here on DU that is the point.

.......Hillary Clinton has been bled, drawn, and quartered... even assailed for her clothing.

14. Your choice of words is - unfortunate
Especially in light of recent remarks by Clinton. As a white woman (I'm one of those too) you may not be sensitive to the way in which equating Clinton with a lynching is, in many ways, disgusting. But it is disgusting to me.

In no place across the south or midwest were white people lynched while blacks held picnics and watched. Yes, watched. Entertainment. This history is one of the most despicable of the too recent past.

The ONLY whites in the U.S. who were pulled from their houses and lynched were labor organizers - and those were in the northwest, for the most part. Not the south. They were communists.

When Hillary Clinton reaches those levels of alienation from mainstream power, maybe then you wouldn't be shaming yourself to use the word lynching in respect to a white person (who has, btw, used racially-coded statements to try to convince others of her electibility.)

I am embarrassed to see this from a white person.

Please read these statistics on the Internet:

From 1882-1968, 4,743 lynchings occurred in the United States. Of these people that were lynched 3,446 were black. The blacks lynched accounted for 72.7% of the people lynched. These numbers seem large, but it is known that not all of the lynchings were ever recorded. Out of the 4,743 people lynched only 1,297 white people were lynched. That is only 27.3%. Many of the whites lynched were lynched for helping the black or being anti lynching and even for domestic crimes.

By the way, how many people have already predicted that Senator Hillary Clinton will lose her Senate seat?

34. And prior to the Civil War, lynching was an extralegal form of punishment...
meted out to those who were "different," or "eccentric."

Those included whites (the Italian lynching in New Orleans is a terrible stain on the city to this day), blacks, American Indians, and even Chinese.

Regardless...people have used domestic violence analogies, and rape analogies, in this forum....but they think that the lynching analogy is off limits.

67. I don't know about the term lynching, but the Hillary Campaign has been the most negative campaign
against a fellow Democrat I can remember. The kitchen sink has been thrown at Obama. He has been extremely reticent to fire back at Hillary at this level.

Have Obama supporters been rude? Well, er, yes some of them some of the time. But let's also ask the question, have Hillary supporters been rude? Well, er, yes some of them some of the time.

I think things would tone down among the supporters if Hillary radically changed her course, and instead of being so negative, she would have the same reluctance to go personally negative as Obama has demonstrated.

As to her supporters thinking she is crucified or lynched or worse....quit the frigging whining!

In a way, it's not surprising that the lynchees would, given a chance assume the role of lynchors. But they sure shouldn't lynch their historical allies, particularly just before a general election.

It's part of the radio talk show vernacular:

You have to say something REALLY REPULSIVE about every 45 minutes to get people to call you.

Consider that to be actually quite repulsive.

PS. I grew up in south Florida from the 1940s to the 1960s. I saw KKK meetings and I know about lynchings.
Obviously, I touched a nerve but I've held back for so long I just couldn't stand it anymore.

“It's part of the radio talk show vernacular:

Consider that to be actually quite repulsive.”

...and taking into account DU's rules on unnecessarily incendiary language, moves this sort of post to a level beneath you.

Frustration with the way things have gone, I can understand. But this is needless earth-scorching.

This isn't radio. We're not jocking to spike numbers for a ratings book. It's a moderated message board with certain rules in place.

We should behave accordingly.

...which I can't disagree with at all. I should rise above all of this, but I just can't square it away with my internal bellyful of indignation.

So fire me.

No, better yet... we can recycle those old bumperstickers in a couple of years:

"Don't Blame Me -- I Voted for Clinton."

We went to a Springfest of the Washington County (Oregon) Democrats last night. My husband is an elected committeeperson with that group. He was overseeing the Silent Auction. NO ONE even put in a winning bid for the two Hillary Clinton signed T-shirts donated by someone.

The few (four women I saw) people who had Hillary buttons on had a good cry. We all discussed what had happened to her during this campaign. I said she had been put on the rack, one woman said she had been drawn and quartered... and a brown skinned woman said she has been lynched.

Perhaps I picked up the two ugliest comments I heard and decided to run with them.

Thanks for your comments.

Nobody put in a winning bid because of how she has run her campaign.

How can you blame anyone but the Clintons themselves for their dirty campaign tactics? They devised the strategy to go negative, they adopted race-baiting tactics, they told false stories, they hired lobbyists for the Columbian trade deal, they changed the rules on FL and MI and then campaign in a way to piss off the people in FL and MI by not telling the truth, they talk like they respect McCain more than Obama. It is the Clintons that you should be pissed off at. They ran an old style campaign. They didn't think we would see through their BS. They didn't change with the times.

If person A is disliked by a lot of people, generally it isn't the lot of people that need to examine themselves. Hillary and her husband need to take a good hard look in the mirror to find the answers to their problems.

We even have had skinheads throw ugly antisemitic messages in baggies onto our driveway here in suburban Portland in the last few years.

In the 1950s and early 1960s I lived in Clayton County GA, which then was Klan territory. This was during the civil rights era. Lester Maddox and all. We heard of Klan meetings, but except for a few night time assemblies at Stone Mountain, Klansmen did not hold meetings in public all dressed up.

My grandfather was an attorney and my mother a civil rights activist.
Why would your father have taken a kid around to places where Klansmen assembled? That would have been dangerous.

Other places I lived in the South were Mobile AL and Savannah, GA.

There were times when we went to their homes at night, under cover of darkness and driving in a green 53 Buick with only parking lights on. I wasn't that young. I was probably 13 or 14.

My parents were Northerners, both born in Pittsburgh, PA.

At this late date, all I can say is that white people who felt segregation was wrong -- infiltrated the Klan at very young ages. Some of these people are in my high school class and I consider them to be very brave.

Again, I have seen Klan meetings -- one in Jacksonville, FL and one in Tallahassee, FL. I did NOT say the people wore robes, but they were definitely meetings. Those were very troubling times.

Incidentally, my father represented a man whose legs were cut off by a moving Ferris wheel. That man had no insurance, but Dad got him some money for his medical expenses. Dad was a legend in his own time -- went before Judge Vincent Giblin and was told to call a Negro by his first name such as "Jim." Dad refused to do it, and continued to call him "Mr. Smith."

Considering the emotionally-scarifying contents, "Thanks!" doesn't seem like an appropriate response. But that's the best word I can think of! And it most definitely "belongs" on this thread!

I'm a Bernie Sanders sort of "Democrat", and little more than a month ago, I had only passing interest in either Obama OR Clinton. My feelings were that Bush, Cheney & Halliburton had so DAMAGED the office of Presidency, that it would be decades before it would have any real meaning. I was WRONG of course, but it seems to me that ONLY Obama and the movement that he's inspiring can restore it. I'm now a committed Obama supporter, and now have little more than scorn for Clinton. I too am appalled at the mutual rancor displayed by partisans of both on my beloved DU. But frankly, the theme of the original posting strikes me as overblown and close to hysterical. AND distracting from getting ready for November!

A person who refuses to except that they have lost any race, should expect a lot of Negative Attention! But as far as lynching goes

this is lynching

This is what happened to my grandfather. Unless we see Hillary beaten half to death and hung from a tree, do not use that term ever. Be it "Verbally" or otherwise. No one has laid a finger on this woman. Words will never hurt as much as a rope around your neck.

Hillary picked a bad team
they over spent HER campaign funds.
She WRONGLY assumed she was going to win
She lost 32 out of 47 states to date.
She is behind in everything, POP vote, Pledged Delegates, states won, and now super delegates.

And yet she still thinks she can and should win. That's not Holocaust, that's not "bled, drawn"
and the only "voodoo" happening is Hillary trying to magically make low numbers appear to be winning numbers this ain't golf

The longer she stays, the more she turns off her most loyal SD supporters, the crazier she looks.
it's fact.

And when I see her gassed, or swinging from a tree, those terms should not be associated with her.

And to think people "did something to her" is stone retarded She lost fair and square, drink some tea, smoke some herb, do some yoga, but do what your candidate can not except that she lost and move on. It's pathetic

She was worked to death in a labor camp (after leaving the Wallmart board meeting, when they screwed the workers' rights to health care benefits)
She had her gold teeth pulled from her rotting corpse (after she found her SHOCK! SURPRISE! Rose Law Firm Billing records hiding in the White House closet)
She was beaten, raped, had her hair cut off and used for pillows, was starved and beaten again, while working in the munitions plant (right after she created peace in Ireland)

I don't agree with your premise, because I believe for the most part that Hillary Clinton brought a lot of negativity on herself. 51. if you cannot see this, then I cannot claim common cause with any of you
I have you on ignore, Maddy, so I cannot reply directly to your post. I did look to see who said something about this. If you all can claim there is no history in this nation that overshadows the issue of lynching, specifically in relation to the position of black people in this society, then you can't. I can't argue this. You can't.

I do find it repulsive and since I do, I had to say something because I do not want my silence to be perceived as consent.

It is especially repulsive to me, when defended, because Hillary is a part of the power structure in this nation. No powerful white person in this nation, to my knowledge, was ever lynched. The term stands as a metaphor for racial hatred and I find it shameful.

Are you aware that whites who were standing up for the rights of African Americans in the South
Edited on Sun May-11-08 02:29 PM by truedelphi
Sometimes using their postions as labor stewards to help the cause of Civil Rights - these people were accused of being communists?

They could not in the fifties be legally fired for being "n lovers" but they could be fired for being communists.

Quite often it was our country's white "communists" who were pushing for conditions to change so that no people of color would be denied the right to work and also of course, so that lynchings would be a thing of the past. The whites who kept their noses clean steered clear of both communism and Civil Rights actions.

79. Interestingly, many lynchings were done to "protect" white women from black men
One of the most common "crimes" that led to lynchings was anything that could be seen as disrespecting white women - including simply making eye contact. And while they rarely participated in the lynchings themselves, many white women watched proudly as their men did the deeds - and then joined them in posing proudly for the "lynching photo" taken and distributed afterward.

So using the term "lynching" under these circumstances is not only disturbing, it grotesquely twists and turns on its head the filthy reality of lynching in this country's history.

16. Unfortunately, RL
Edited on Sun May-11-08 01:58 PM by nathan hale
reasoned and intelligent debate is a rare commodity here on DU. Everyone has a bunch of "hot buttons". Push one of those and you get invective and hate-filled sentiments worthy of FR and worse.

Often, pleas for compassion or laying off the vitriol is interpreted as stupidity or being on the other side or what-not.

I shan't reveal my choice for Democratic candidate at this point, because, for me, it was over in the Florida primary. It's all moot.

For those with primaries still up, intelligent discourse would make this a much better place. Sometimes DU can be embarrassing.

I don't recall saying anything hateful about either candidate. But, if I did, I'm sorry.

17. Is she trying to drum up more listeners to her show?
I can't understand someone that has such a big ego as to post THREE SEPARATE IMAGES of herself on a thread where she's essentially saying "bye bye for now"!

I guess she wants more Hillary listeners to her radio show.

Maybe I'm wrong. But I just have to wonder.

Also, with the remarks of the former President and the former First Lady in the last 6 months, all the way from "I will win" or "Michigan doesn't count for anything" from Hillary to "Jessie Jackson won SC" from the former Prez, to "hard working white people" from Hillary last week, I'm not really interested in how awful and how abused Hillary fans feel that they are now. They have their candidate to thank for how angry and insulted folks of all colors and ages who support Obama feel now.

That's my take on this mess Hillary created.

Others can fill you on on the details, and there are a lot of them. I have been branded with about everything you can think of so I'm not really worried. I have quite a history in radio -- most of which I am extremely proud of.

However, I'm bored, and you have so many DU friends downthread now, they will gladly point out archived remarks. They like to do that, but I guess I have good company in media.

I have no idea who the two folks are on your avatar. They're pretty interesting!!!

Again, you know practically nothing about me. You will know even less and be less disturbed if you just put me on IGNORE.

I promise.

I do like to share my background with others. No need to go into it with you, but I've been a public person more or less since I was seventeen years old.

It's OK with me that you don't feel that need. I'm not asking you anything about yourself.

My conversations with others don't need to include you. Many people ask me about my screen name (actually, it's obsolete, because I am not on the radio anymore, but that just happened last month).

Why are you putting yourself through this?

Do you cringe when you come upon people who seem to be less private than you are? Why is that? Is there no room in your universe for a woman who is "out there" with her ideas and feelings? This is not a competition, you know -- it's just a forum.

Fascinating.

If you get a chance to see the movie "Miss Potter" -- you might enjoy it.

All about Beatrix Potter, the writer -- played with quite a bit of charm by Renee Zellweger and some wonderfully animated characters.

The gorgeous Ewan McGregor is in it, too. So is Emily Watson. It's British -- filmed in London and on the Isle of Man. We had the opportunity of visiting England three times so far -- and Scotland, too. We were briefly on the Isle of Skye.

Have a good week. I'm not really a harpy! Thanks for letting me know about your studies. I'm really impressed. Might even go back to school for an MFA, if I live that long. But I'll probably go to my grave with BA in Communications long ago in 2/62.

Peace, love and happiness,

304. AFTER DINNER: Welcome to the DU, MikeDJohn. I apologize for the insult.
I keep forgetting there are many DUers who I've never met -- but some who just like to get the digs in.

I appreciate your keeping me in line.

Let's see -- I'll be 69 on May 31, husband born in Brockton, Massachusetts, will be 74, we are on fixed income, both college graduates but we like to say "Pretty much everything we learned is now obsolete." By the way, I went to the University of Miami, brilliantly nicknamed "Suntan U." when I might have gone to an Ivy League school.

We lived in Sudbury, Massachusetts before following a daughter out here to Oregon in 1998, which is a lot like Massachusetts but with less snow (except on the mountains).

That's about it. Oh, you can figure out my background from the archives, but Larry King and I dated briefly in Miami in the 1950s, and then as a divorced woman, I reconnected with him in the 1970s. I worked for several unpaid months as his screener (the person who answer the telephone calls before they go on the air) on his 11 PM to 5 AM shift. He got arrested in December a few days before Christmas. I got hired to do the show before they selected a male host; was heard in Boston and hired as the first woman with a daily call in show on WEEI, 590 AM.

So, the upshot is that I dated Larry King but didn't marry him. (Of course, he never asked me.) Larry inadvertently launched my radio career (I had also been a children's TV co-host in 1957-1958.)

Now, wasn't that EXCITING?

Cordially,

Radio Lady Ellen Kimball in Oregon

Obama is ahead and has earned the nomination because he has run a better campaign and will run a better campaign against Mcain.

...I never saw that, but there are far more threads of (probably mostly women) who really credit Hillary with how great she looks under all the pressure.

It looks to me like a bad joke, and you can be as offended as you wish but, you said it wouldn't be said of a male candidate. How can anyone forget Gore's "earth-tones", Bushes 'flight suit', Dukakis' helmet. Candidates are criticized for how they look all the time.

Radio Lady, Im not normally one to offer my personal opinion about other posters on this board, but your OP has driven me to it.

Regardless of the fact that I completely disagree with the language and even the basic premise of your OP (Hillary supporters have given as good as they've gotten, so its really a moot point), I feel compelled to tell you what a nasty, condescending person you've shown yourself to be, through your own words.

Perhaps thats why you seem incapable of understanding the reason for the vitriol directed toward Hillary by some DUers. Also explains why you're one of her supporters.

You share a lot of her most unattractive behavioral qualities.

327. Well, ChefGirl, I'm sorry to let you down. I've watched this campaign go from good to bad to worse.
First of all, I don't know you at all. I make no assumptions on your motives or your character. Certainly, I have no idea why you feel the need to chastize me. The conclusions you have reached are quite flawed, in my estimation. But, so be it.

I've stood by while people took a once revered politician -- who happens to be a woman with a superlative background -- and used whatever they could to derail her campaign. It has happened to many politicians before her and this won't be the last time, I'm sure.

Yes, there were obviously some bad decisions made by either herself or her managers. I can certainly agree with that. We can say that assuredly after the fact, as we did with Kerry and even Gore. Right now, I'm having a problem with both Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, to be sure.

However, what has come out in the LAST MONTH OR SO about Hillary is beyond revulsion. But to see it dredged up by Saturday Night Live and cartoons across the country -- was just the last straw.

Perhaps it started in March of this year. It seemed that just little cut on Hillary's persona (whatever it was, I don't recall exactly) started to bleed badly.

And that's when the sharks came in for the kill. I won't even call them Obama supporters. It was pretty much everybody..... IK didn't keep track of who the people were who "headed for the hills" on another website that someone started.

I'm sorry you don't see it my way. There are millions of people like me and certainly millions like you. Again, may I state, I will vote the straight Democratic ticket in November. It will be because I see the Republican threat more than I consider the vulnerability of either the presidential or vice-presidential candidates on the Democratic side.

You don't know my behavioral qualities at all, beyond a couple of posts of less than impressive prose about a variety of things pertaining to me and my interests shared mostly in the DU Lounge. As far as the post this morning and last night, the verbiage just went too far on the other side. So I said what I said. Sorry for the offense, but it's what I felt at the time.

Once again, you have your IGNORE button. I couldn't agree with you more that you should NEVER HEAR FROM ME AGAIN.

Cordially,

Radio Lady in Oregon

Edited on Mon May-12-08 10:20 AM by chefgirl
First of all, I don't know you at all. I make no assumptions on your motives or your character.

You're right, you don't know me at all. While I am far from being the most prolific poster here, I have been here since George Bush's first inauguration day, which, unless Im mistaken, was the very first day in DU's existence. I trust that should speak well enough to my motives. As for my character, well, you're perfectly free to form your own opinion.

You don't know my behavioral qualities at all, beyond a couple of posts of less than impressive prose about a variety of things pertaining to me and my interests shared mostly in the DU Lounge.

Again, you're right, but since this is a discussion board, peoples' opinions of your behavioral qualities will be formed by the quality of the posts you offer.

I will say that I'm fairly familiar with your posts on DU, and generally find you interesting to read.

I will further say, for what its worth, that in the past 7 or so years, I've seen MANY less than worthy posts, less than worthy discussions, lots of rotten, ignorant, hurtful, inconsiderate, nasty words from many DUers to many others, and in that time, I've only once before felt it necessary to give another DUer a 'piece of my mind', so to speak.

I just wanted you to know, because you either seem to have lost sight of it, or never realized it, that the words we choose and the tone with which we choose to deliver them defines us entirely in a discussion board setting, and the words and tone of your OP, and subsequent replies in this thread, diminished my opinion of you (and I'm sure others opinions as well).

It seemed hypocritical, hypercritical, and as I said, just plain nasty.

Lastly, I don't know where I couldn't agree with you more that you should NEVER HEAR FROM ME AGAIN. came from, but it wasn't a quote from me, just to clear that up. Perhaps you mistook me for another poster who replied.

I do agree though, I have an ignore button....as do you...and since I'm not the one who was attempting to excoriate a bunch of people, wholesale, well...

Thanks for the civil reply, though. Seems more like what I know of you.

That isn't how it works.

If you are reasonable as you try to imply, then you would condemn the Hillary supporters who use like tactics that caused you to post the OP. It was the copy cat thread that you gave as an example of the bad Obama supporters. Now that you know there are bad Hillary supporters one would think that you would condemn them, that is your goal isn't it, being fair?

I've claimed no position of any importance, I am just a simple DUer whose opinion means little - I have no false sense of self-importance so using the "priestess" tag was just one of your odd little games to antagonize or mock.

Damn shame you have wasted a day with all the negatives you have posted.

393. Merh, researching you... it's what it always comes to with you.
My outrage is sincere. Hillary Clinton is damaged goods and it's a crying shame this has happened -- even her T-shirts didn't sell last night at our Democratic Silent Auction.

It has happened to a woman with whom I felt a great and positive connection. Although I have never met her, maybe I felt a personal connection because of the way she handled the very difficult PERSONAL problems in her life. That resounded very well to me. The people of the State of New York apparently agreed because they elected her as Senator -- which is no small feat, since we all agree she was NOT living in the state full-time after President Clinton left office.

I used the terminology that I had heard last evening from someone who was clearly upset, as I was. Sure, it was incendiary. That's the way you get people to wake up and think. Maybe you didn't like it; maybe it doesn't fit YOUR universe, whatever that happens to be.

My reasoning is just as good as yours is. That's about it.

You can declare yourself the winner by trying your best to goad me this morning (hey, welcome to Monday). Just like everything else here, winning (an argument) is in the eye of the beholder, just like beauty.

Cheers.

40. Do you expect a black person to be able to verbally explain to you why he/she feels
something is racist. If not, then why do you expect a woman to have to explain. Sometimes it is very hard to verbalize and when that happens, it makes it easy for people to deny it is happening.

Sexism is more then just words and sometimes words can't explain it. But if you haven't noticed the blatant sexism in the media and from some duers I doubt you would be able to see the pervasive shit.

it has helped me better understand the racial problems that exist in this nation, in my state, despite those who try to downplay them or say they do not exist. It helps me understand how they feel about this election.

As a woman, I have found nothing sexist in the attacks on hillary. The attacks are made on her just as they are made on all public figures by those who dislike the public figure or what they do in correlation to their public roles.

The attacks have been made on her tactics, on what she had chosen to do as a candidate and how she had decided to run her campaign.

And while you are looking for a link to the full statement, please look up who made the pansy statement and why and the statement's of Carville. Hillary's supporters and campaign shouldn't take offense to a statement that is purportedly sexist if they themselves use similar statements or depict her in such fashion.

Edited to add: I might point out the very obvious, it is not Obama or his campaign that has used that descriptor of her.

423. merh - the person who is sexist in the example above is
Chris Matthews. I did not hear the remark, I read the remark above, you didn't seem to understand what was sexist about it so I explained it. I assume that either you didn't understand it or you didn't want to back down from your previous statement.

I don't listen to Chris Matthews anymore because he is a gossipy, know-it-all creep, in addition to being sexist. Unfortunately a lot of people still listen to him and obviously think it's perfectly acceptable to make these sort of comments.

I've never called Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or Bill Clinton or Michelle Obama a bad name and I have every right to call out sexism when I see it. I don't consider myself a Hillary supporter as much as a Hillary defender - and I defend her because she is a woman and I believe she has been treated unfairly because she is both a woman and Hillary Clinton. I'm sure it is much the same as people defending Barack Obama because they feel he has been treated unfairly because he is black.

If I had my preferences Clinton and Obama would not have been the last 2 candidates standing - I don't really care for either of them.

She ran a divisive, negative, race-baiting campaign and was repudiated by the majority of the party, thank God (and it would've happened a lot sooner if not for all the wingnuts crossing party lines to vote for her). 39. In defense of DU
Other places have posters who exhibit far worse behavior and the place is moderated pretty fairly. And a fair amount of the ugliness was created by Hillary supporters.

Hillary also brought some of this criticism on herself - starting with the calculating IWR vote and currently continuing with "the hard-working whites" commentary.

"Verbally lynched" is a peculiar use of the language not least because you can't put a noose around someone's neck "verbally." For black folks lynching didn't happen verbally but rather literally.

I actually got what she was saying. It's daft if you've ever been raped or shot repeatedly or lynched or molested. And it's just bullshit.

I'm flipping channels and I see Lanny Davis - once an honorable man - excoriate Barack over what some acquaintance did in the 60s. And then what his pastor said. On Hannity. Yes, that Hannity. Are more smears coming? More guilt by association? How much worse will they be? And to what end?

Harsh criticism of a political candidate is NOT a lynching - verbal or otherwise - any more than criticism of Barack Obama could quqlify as a "verbal rape."

Enough with the overblown hyberbole. Hillary is a grown-assed woman who decided on her own to run or the highest office in the land. Criticism comes with territory. She seems to understand this - you might want to follow her lead..

They pulled the same smear campaign on Gore in 2000 - and again, it was a Democrat (Bill Bradley) behind it.

It's just naive to think the Obama campaign doesn't play dirty - I hope people know better.

62. "Verbally lynched" ? Insensitive hyperbole to say the least
Senator Clinton put herself forward as a candidate and, it seems, has been found wanting when compared to Senator Obama. When one is asking the public for their vote, one is also opening themselves up for criticism on their statements, their policies, their very actions.

To have someone post such criticism is the equivalent of being "verbally lynched" is beyond ridiculous, imo.

The former thread was a GOTCHA for Don Imus.

I thought it worked in the context -- but Jon Stewart used it a couple of days later... with some words bleeped out... so I feel vindicated.

403. Hey, Tarheel_Dem... why not ask your "friends" to look for the infamous...
discussion about the Olive Garden, which I perpetrated on many unsuspecting people several years ago.

OMG, I actually told people that the Olive Garden Restaurant in NYC was an excellent place to eat... Horror of horrors.

And, there was that time when I talked about a friend of mine who happened to be from Pakistan... that was a rouser... by the way, we're still friends, even though she is NOT my religion or my race... because Pakistani people are Asians. Did you know that?

What about the two kids in the airport with their mother and father who I wanted to take home to my house because... well, you'll find it, I know. It was the most horrible thing... you wouldn't believe what a commotion it caused here.

The trouble is that I really don't care what YOU have said in the past. The only time I searched for someone it was for finding their photos. It's just this candidiate and today I'm concerned about. I could build a seething case for Senator Obama, but I would prefer to just let things unfold... and I'm doing a LOT of praying, which is about as spiritual as I ever get.

Trust me, you're barking up the wrong tree. I may be something you're just not used to -- a fully opinionated woman in the beautiful fall of life who has the spirit and willingness to go right "out there" with her viewpoints. I've been doing it since I was seventeen.

Maybe you've never met a woman like me. You wouldn't know what to do with her if you did!

Remember, you'll have to read me my Miranda rights the next time you walk down this lane... everything I say at the DU can and will be used against me. No problem. I'm ready. I still think Don Imus is a dunce, and the comment I made was my lame attempt at humor. Funny thing is that Comedy Central's Jon Stewart used exactly the same phrase a couple of days later. They bleeped it, but I heard what I needed to hear.

Cheers,

It's Monday.

115. Lord God, what hypocrisy. Dish it out, but obviously can't take it.

117. Stop with the lynch word.
I disagreed with an Obama supporter who used it, and now I'm disagreeing with you. In fact, anyone who uses the word "lynch" to describe anything that isn't an actual lynching should be ashamed of themselves.

If you think I'm overreacting, educate yourself. Go look at some pictures of a human being who has been lynched. There are plenty on the internet. You can probably find first-person accounts of witnesses to lynching, too. I'm sure you can find first-person accounts from the families of people who were dragged from their homes in the middle of the night to be tortured and murdered by mobs.

119. It's always good to be crystal clear about what white folks complain is happening to them....
Just "verbally" of course. :eyes:

124. Wow.
"Hillary Clinton has been bled, drawn, and quartered... even assailed for her clothing."

Wow, that's quite dramatic. Personally, I don't find playing the victim very liberating.

127. Radio Lady, You have expressed exactly how I feel. This race
between Clinton and Obama could have been one that would have left us with the happiest of memories and a campaign that we could really rejoice in; the first time in US history that a woman and an African American were up for a chance at the presidency and what happened? People have acted like crazed zealots with hatred on their lips. Instead there will remain feelings of bitterness and disallusionment in the Democratic party because of thoughtless slurs against our candidates. It hasn't been easy holding trying to hold back venomous words against those who have contibuted to such disturbing division within the party.

What a great idea!

Strength in numbers -- add the millions for Hillary to the millions for Barack. EITHER WAY, WE'VE GOT A BIG WIN ON OUR HANDS!

Forget it, babe.

This is the most divisive, rude, incomprehensible, ugly, fatuous, crappy primary campaign I can imagine. Democrats seem to be doing it to THEMSELVES.

Whatever your alignment, you can get the shaft for so many things, it's truly a brilliant strategy. Kind of like the Trojan horse, in a way.

I will never forget it. I will remember it longer than the Bush v. Gore debacle. I hope Skinner can keep his head about him while others are losing theirs.

Cordially if at all possible,

Radio Lady in Oregon

134. Love you Radio Lady, but strongly disagree with your view of Hillary and her reality
and think you fail to realize how HER OWN ACTIONS PAST AND PRESENT have lead to her reception amongst Democrats, Progressives, blacks, activists, grassroots organizers and a lot of other people working hard to change things.
