Mission Accomplished: CNN Headline "AMERICA ON ALERT"
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/08/01/politics/01CND-THRE.html?hp

"This afternoon we do have new and unusually specific information about where Al Qaeda would like to attack," Mr. Ridge said at a news conference in Washington.

"As a result, today the United States government is raising the threat level to Code Orange for the financial services sector in New York City, northern New Jersey, and Washington, D.C.," he said.

He said the executive leadership in those institutions had been contacted, but the department did not know the timing of the attacks.

"We have told them that, at this time, there is no information that indicates a specific time for these attacks beyond the period leading up to our national elections," Mr. Ridge said.

_______________

We alert, you decide!

2. I disagree with this...
Canceling the RNC would only fuel the fire to stop the elections all together come November. Ignoring this bullshit would be the safe and sane thing to do.

10. We can't let them have it both ways
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 06:25 PM by rocknation
If they're not worried about holding the three-day convention anyway, how can they justify NOT having a one-day election? Why not have NY, NJ and DC vote entirely by absentee ballot? There's time to set it up. And once again, the timing is supsect. I'm sure the Bush regime realizes how bad it would have looked if this news had come out a week sooner, which would have bee just BEFORE the dem convention!

4. This is getting to be a real pain
in the ass.I am sick to death of all these phony false alarms.Anytime bu$h and his gang of thugs think they are in trouble POLITICALLY.....they roll out the ole "terra" alert. Works every time. All the networks follow their marching orders from the White-house and they take it and run with it. Good distraction from Kerry's momentum. The dirty creeps.

an attack on the RNC taking place the first couple days of the convention...

the speakers schedule the first couple days is wall to wall moderates...wipe out those within the GOP that might oppose continued Orwellinization of the US

gives ya that attack, a justification for suspension of the election, red alert, and declaring martial law

6. Calling the warnings fake is useless
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 05:38 PM by Tom Rinaldo
Calling the warnings useless is helpful. They may be fake, but we can't prove that. They also may be real. I never believed for a moment that Muslim extremists would bring down the Twin Towers, and try to take out the Capital in DC, and then say, "OK, we made our point. We'll stop now." I wouldn't want to be the Boy who cried Wolf, but I wouldn't want to be the guy who said, "Don't pay any attention to that boy, he's just looking for attention" if the wolf was moving in for a kill either.

The point has been skillfully made that this Administration puts our country on War footing, and then not only has no idea what to ask of our citizens to help us stay safe (other than "Be Alert") but actually gives away Billions of tax dollars to our wealthiest individuals and corporations instead of paying for more police officers and increased inspections at our ports and so much else. The last thing we as Democrats should be doing is pooh poohing Terrorist threats. It does not help the public have confidence that we are serious about protecting them, and it would look terrible politically should an attack actually happen.

I don't put it past the Bush Administration to cynically and manipulatively play with Threats, but I also don't put it past Al Quada to want to attack America again before Election Day. The way to hit Bush on this is to stress how poorly his Administration has done at getting the public involved, and how it often seems that their Anti Terrorist strategy consists of creating a set of color codes with recommendations that municipalities put their police forces on over time pay, with no way for municipalities to pay for it.
