Novak: Michelle Vetoes Hillary for VP
Michelle Vetoes Hillary

By Robert Novak

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Close-in supporters of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign are convinced he never will offer the vice presidential nomination to Sen. Hillary Clinton for one overriding reason: Michelle Obama.

The Democratic front-runner's wife did not comment on other rival candidates for the party's nomination, but she has been sniping at Clinton since last summer. According to Obama sources, those public utterances do not reveal the extent of her hostility.

A footnote: Support is growing in Democratic ranks for Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland as vice president. He would bring to the ticket maturity (66 years old), experience (six terms in Congress) and moderation (rated "A" by the National Rifle Association). He is very popular in Ohio, a state Republicans must carry to elect a president.

She's a Chicago south-sider. She's got street smarts on TOP of a brilliant mind.

Personally, I have far more respect for Michelle's ability to read people than Hillary's ... and I'd be far more inclined to seek out Michelle's company than Hillary's.

13. Fuck What Michelle Thinks. Ain't Up To Her.
Not sure who the fuck she thinks she is either that she's so arrogant to think such a decision is up to her. What position has she ever held in the Democratic Party that gives her right to try and decide such a thing? Is she so ignorant and naive to think that such a decision rests on whether you like someone or not? You don't like Hillary, Michelle, we get it. But it really ain't up to you.

I'm still hoping that the delegates will negotiate that deal and that they will almost force his hand into having her on the ticket. I still think that would be our best hope in November, even if it would make Michelle throw a tantrum.

43. Hope away. But Clinton has too many negatives to be VP
1) Who could trust her not to undermine anything he is working toward? Their entire modus operandi is diametrically opposed.
2) She and Bill's histrionics would be a distraction. We've got enough drama going on with the nation's problems without having to endure watching the Clintons' personal dramas unfold for the next 4-8 years.
3) He would be better served putting a white male on the ticket to "reassure" the part of America already pushed to the edge of their comfort zone with an AA man at the top of the ticket. There are many choices out there that can appeal to the demographic Hillary has claimed as hers alone.
4) Obama holds the cards with his money raising prowess. I don't think anyone is going to be able to twist his arm to accept Clinton on the ticket. Rather, he's been able to do a little arm twisting of his own, since he's swimming in money and everyone else needs some.

34. Novak has no credibility
None of this would be worthy of comment were Robert Novak not also a deeply dishonest ideologue who exploits his media prominence to promote his cronies and lie about his enemies. He has done so, unapologetically, since the 1960s. That he continues to be treated as a serious commentator and responsible reporter speaks volumes about how degraded the mores of contemporary American politics have become.

Novak has been misleading his readers for nearly 40 years now. In his early decades, he would do so rather subtly, by picking out favorite politicians and attaching favorable adjectives to their names, while doing the reverse to those with whom he disapproved. An extreme conservative, he almost always chose the most regressive politicians -- of either party -

41. Novak redux: shades of Plame. "He's pathetic because his wife's really in control".
This reeks of the same kind of right-wing misogyny that reactionaries love to insinuate into things. By pointing out that Wilson only got his assignment to Niger because of his wife, snots like Rove and Novak intended to marginalize him as being subservient to a mere female.

In the same way, Novak intends to besmirch Obama's masculinity and further demonize Michelle Obama.

Perhaps it's true, and perhaps her influence is greater than assumed and not always in the direction of "oneness" and all that, but this still just smacks of the standard procedure.

44. Apply the usual caveat - any comments of this nature made by Michelle
would likely have been made to only the closest inner circle of her friends. What is the likelihood that any of them speak to Novack?

I would take Ted Kennedy's public statement as proof over a supposed comment from a "close-in" supporter of Obama who is willing to speak to Novack about something Obama's wife said in private.
