Obama schedules Oregon stops: Beaverton, Albany and Eugene
Senator Barack Obama will make three stops in Oregon Friday in his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

His campaign says he will appear in Beaverton, Albany and Eugene.

Obama is expected to talk to workers at a Beaverton educational software company. In Albany he will speak at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center and will hold a rally at the University of Oregon. Only the Albany and Eugene events are open to the public.

Obama is expected to remain in Oregon on Saturday. No details were given on his plans that day.

Senator Hillary Clinton is scheduled for a "town hall" event Thursday at the Jackson County Exposition Park in Central Point. And she is expected to have a health care discussion Friday at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

2. Beaverton? The burbs?
Oh. I guess it isn't the plethora of suburban matrons he's after there, but the tech workers -- the DINKs at Nike and similar companies.

6. well, there's Beaverton and then there's Beaverton
Usually considered an upper middle class suburb, but over the last twenty years it has absorbed a HUGE immigrant influx. Property values have fallen, and some neighborhoods have declined.

Obama's base there will be found in the campuses of high tech companies. Not exactly the usual diversity of Democratic voters.

And I love the diversity around this place.

Within east biking distance (and/or a short light rail trip) there are ethnic markets from all around the world.

A Russian/Eastern European market;

A Peruvian Market;

An El Salvadoreno restaurant/market;

A little Thai grocery; a little Vietnamese grocery and a HUGE Pam Asian supermarket;

Several Indian markets;

A large Middle Eastern/Persian market;

Several Hispanic markets;

A little Dutch store;

Three farmers' markets (Beaverton, Hillsboro and Orenco).

Plus Trader Joes, Haggen, Whole Foods and New Seasons (selling all organic & Northwest fare)

There aren't many places anywhere that you can find all this stuff so close together.

Kind of a chef's paradise.

14. Blew me away first time I went in there!
Never had Japanese ice cream/popsycle type deals before!

Their recipe page is also pretty cool.

13. There was an article in the Oregonian (maybe a year ago?)
that said Beaverton is actually quite a bit more diverse, ethnically, than Portland.

5. I should say...
...that my librarian sister in Beaverton is voting for McCain because she admires his devotion to duty in Vietnam.

that devotion to duty is hardly what you call it when you are a prisoner? He openly admits that under torture he gave information.

10. Yep, that's where I work
Lots of high tech here, Nike, Intel, etc. we like our Starbucks too! :D

FYI on the radio this morning they claimed to have called several people to ask if they were going to see Clinton and said not one single person they talked to was going. Not making fun of Hillary, just feeling a little bad for her at this point.
