Former Republican to seek Libertarian presidential nomination
WASHINGTON (CNN) - Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr will announce Monday that he will run for president as a Libertarian, a source close to the Georgian told CNN.

Barr will officially declare his candidacy at a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington. The four-term congressman left the GOP in 2006, saying that Republicans had "lost their core principles."

Barr made a name for himself in Congress for his ardent conservative philosophy and his role in President Clinton's impeachment. He lost a primary election in 2002.

Last month, Barr formed a presidential exploratory committee as he weighed a run for the White House. The source said that Barr had been considering a presidential bid "for several months. He currently runs Liberty Strategies, a consulting firm in Atlanta and Washington.

Barr joins a handful of other candidates seeking the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination including former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel, who unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination this year. Libertarians meet in Denver on May 22 for a four day convention where members will choose the party's presidential nominee.

4. LMAO. Yes, Bob. Conservative principles like wasting tens of millions of dollars,
and countless man-hours in all three branches of government, on a blowjob witch-hunt (that led to an acquittal)?

Good luck with that!

9. wait a second. What are Republican core principles?
I thought they were war, tax cuts for the wealthy, and no regulation of corporations. How has Bush strayed from that? Is it just because he hasn't started a war or had a huge tax cut for a whole FIVE years now? Is he slacking off somehow?

11. Yeah, but those Reagan-dictated principles led to misery and recession, so
rather than consider the possibility that their principles might be flawed, the Republicans just assume that Bush somehow didn't do a very good job of executing those principles, and that the next one will turn out better.

16. W00t! Now, if only we could get Ron Paul to do the same...
The two of them together would draw both both protest votes from the GOP and lots of ca$h. And since Paul is very strongly anti-war, he makes the mainstream GOP look even weaker - party is fracturing, and Paul's vocal and (mostly) articulate opposition means the GOP can't paint Obama as a 'wussy liberal'. He also soaks up the wacko right voters - who probably wouldn't vote McCain anyhow, but just might to stop a black man (eg the Stormfront types). They eat up Paul's conspiracy-theory mindset about the federal reserve system etc.

20. And if Ron Paul does run, the smart thing for Democrats...
will be to ignore him and let McCain deal with him. We run vs. McCain. McCain gets criticized from both left and right and has to keep wiggling to distance himself from Paul. Paul's less savory supporters can have their 'white justice' head trip because the drain will be 100% on McCain.

Al Gore to Attack Bush 'Police State'
by Robert B. Bluey
Posted: 01/13/2006

Former Vice President Al Gore will attack President Bush’s domestic eavesdropping program at a Washington, D.C., speech on Martin Luther King Day—with a Republican by his side.

Gore is teaming up with former Rep. Bob Barr, a Republican, for the policy address, which is endorsed by MoveOn.org and sponsored by the American Constitution Society and Liberty Coalition. Barr is an outspoken critic of Bush on issues of national security. He led the drive to impeach President Bill Clinton, Gore’s partner in the White House for eight years.

“The speech will specifically point to domestic wiretapping and torture as examples of the administration's efforts to extend executive power beyond Congressional direction and judicial review,” according to a press release distributed by MoveOn.org. “The extent of bipartisan concern over these issues is highlighted by former Republican Rep. Bob Barr's introduction of the Vice President and by the organizations cosponsoring the speech.”

27. I was about to post something along those lines. Barr's not that far off in some respects
Yeah - going after Clinton was shitty, but then again, so was lying under oath. Barr's been a vocal advocate against Bush Jr. from the get-go from what I understand. He's sure as hell no neocon, like Bush, Cheney, and Hillary.

Libertarians have gained ground in the last few years too. This is bad news for McCain because alot of his fiscal conservative buddies might take a second look Barr.

All a Libertarian is: a Republican who smokes weed.
