Is the possibility of losing to a "dropped out" candidate in WV reason enough for Hilary to stay in?
Some of the talking heads on the corporate media were saying last night that if Hillary were to drop out now, and Obama still lost to a dropped out candidate in WV, it would be an embarrassment for his campaign.

IMO, that is nothing but conjecture.

If the time is right for Hillary to make a graceful exit, then she should do so on it's own merits. It does not make sense to keep her campaign on life support to provide cover to Obama in WV.

Her leaving would set into motion a new mind set, and it may be wrong to assume anything about how West Virgina or Kentucky may vote once Hillary has officially withdrawn from the race.

What do you think?

1. I think she should drop out now.
In an ideal world, she would help by campaigning for Obama, but that is pie in the sky. However, if she did pull off a win, it would be "afterburn" more than anything else. And would not reflect the 30-point advantage she has now, I'm sure.

Anything about how her staying in at this point "helps" him is pure spin, particularly in light of her comments today (she is still promoting the gas tax, still attacking Obama, etc.).

2. If those people really support her, they'd listen to her if she said it's over and to support the...
nominee.

Unless they have other motives for voting for her.

3. As long as she stays positive, I'd rather her stay in through Kentucky, or even Montana/South Dakota
Because I think it's possible that Obama could still lose WV and KY and that would be embarrassing. Plus, I recognize that it takes time to come to terms with losing...it's not unusual for candidates to be in denial at the end. I'm fine with letting the primary play out, letting all 50 states get their say, and then having Obama wrap it up either by May 20 or June 3.

4. It doesn't matter to anybody outside of W Va
And will be a distant memory by November.

But there is a great argument for Obama and Clinton to campaign JOINTLY in W Va and use that as the start of the fall campaign.

Their message could be, "West Virginia, vote for either of us, but get out there and vote. Make your voice heard."

That all depends on Clinton, of course, but Obama can help things along by picking up the tab.

7. And while they're at it, they should have that debate
that Hillary was asking for last week. Only this time it should be a two on zero debate where they train this fire directly on Bush/McCain. This is an opportunity for free national airtime that won't be available later.

5. they want hillary to keep on keeping on
because they have to cover for gramps..when the focus is gone from hillary it`s gramps and that scares the shit out of them. the wright issue is dead, the rezko issue is dead,so the only thing they have left is his race and inexperience. those talking points are going to be a hard sell to the voters who will decide-the undecided voters in the country.

6. Obama won't lose if he can manage to get 30-35% of WV and KY
Edited on Wed May-07-08 12:15 PM by rocknation
Because Hillary's so far behind she'll have to get 86% of the vote in ALL SIX of the remaining contests to beat him. The polls I've seen have Obama in the high twenties in both states. But unless Hillary gets 86%, she won't gain any ground on him, despite all screaming the media will do about a "comeback."

8. why do we think he would lose?
turn out would go way down and only his campaign would be working/spending money in the State.
