3. how did this happen?
I thought we were doing really well on the cash?

I can't afford to give more--in a few months I will make another donation (too late for Kerry--it will have to go to the D. party)

11. Kerry has been outraising him
since he got the nomination, but remember Bush has been raising money for years now.

2. Kerry must be doing OK
This week he paid off the 6.4 million loan on his house out of his campaign funds. Otherwise, I'd be concerned.

Theresa's money isn't Kerry's money.

maximum on campaign contributions have to do with someone owning their own home or not? Usually these two issues are separate (personal finances versus campaign finances). I was referring only to the issue of HOME LOANS.

I know quite a few wealthy people (although none who are nearly are rich as THK). People who are rich generally tend to OWN their homes and toys--they don't tend to have big loans. I was surprised that someone with access to a billion would not be able to afford a house free and clear.

Edited to add:

Anyway, now it is obvious what happened. Kerry himself muddled the two issues.

6. He took it out last Dec
when his campaign was floundering. There was some question about whether he'd pay it off himself or take it out of campaign funds when he was doing better and this week it was reported that the campaign paid it off.

10. The campaign funds must be distributed when he takes the Fed $75m
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 12:46 PM by papau
so that he has only $75 m for the last 13 weeks.

May as well pay off the house loan before the money is given to the DNC for local party races.

Meanwhile Bush has $110 m to spend in Aug - with the unspent after the RNC convention going to the RNC for local races assuming Bush wants his $75 m from the Fed for the last 8 weeks.

I would guess that the RNC will break the law and sent the left over money to a 527 issue org that will do co-ordinated with Bush attack ads against Kerry. It is their history that they break the law - then scream that the Dems are breaking the law. You may recall 96 when Haley parked his boat off the coast of China and took in all that Chinese Commie money (via EU Sub via US sub)and then accused Clinton's Filipino and other non-white skinned friends of sending money that was really commie money to his campaign - indeed the GOP sold - with media help - that a standard OK to sell computers and software maintenance for Sat Tracking to the Chinese was in return for those dollars - of course the media never reported that Reagan and Bush had their Dept of Commerce issue the same computer power waiver for sales to commies - our not right wing GOP controlled media - they just act like they are.

:-)

12. Why not turn it over?
He doesn't want a dem Congress? As you say, Bush will turn his surplus over to the RNC for local races.

There is no chance Bush has so much cash in hand.

I think he has something like 40 million or so in hand. It was all over the news last week but I am lay to find a link.

13. Remember Kerry gets
the government money this week. Bush doesn't get it until September. Bush needs to have more money on hand. I believe the numbers are substantially less than what is reported in the lead post. Since March Kerry has raised far more money than Bush.

14. I think it's a typo by opensecrets, it's more like 66 million
It shows GWBush has raised $228 million
and has spent$162 million

That leaves a difference of 66 million which matches what media reports have said.

16. actually it's thru June 30th (hard to read)
and again it looks like a typo. When you look at cash raised-cash spent you get a far lower number than 110 million (66.5 million). The cash raised-cash spent number for Kerry match to the dollar, so agin it looks like a math error/typo on open secrets part.

I'll try emailing open secrets but it'll take a day or two to get a response

Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 11:43 PM by demwing2
Bush's checkbook:
Receipts - $228,743,338
Expenditures - $162,275,012
On Hand Actual - $66,468,326
On Hand Reported - $110,435,980

So, the truth is that Kerry has on hand about 57% of what Bush has.

18. Why does Bush need money, he owns the entire media!
It doesn't matter if Bush was broke, he would still get the vast majority of the positive press while Kerry was attacked daily, because the right wing controls the U.S. media.

Kerry has less than a week to spend 40 million; Bush has another month to spend 110 million.
