Playing the Culture Card - Newsweek
By Eleanor Clift
Newsweek

July 16, 2004 - Republicans couldn't even muster a simple majority for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, but that didn't stop the GOP-controlled Senate from devoting the better part of a week to the dangers posed by recognizing same-sex unions as legitimate marriages.

A waste of time, yes, but a valuable lesson for the American voter because of what it tells us about the modern Republican Party. The greatest threat to marriage is not Adam and Steve or Heather having two mommies. It’s economic stress. Not having health insurance, getting laid off from your job, falling behind on your rent or mortgage, that’s what shakes marriage and leads to divorce, not gay marriage.

1. Eleanor Clift finally hits one out of the park for our side.
What makes this opinion piece so strong is coupling of the "What's wrong with Kansas' theme coupled with the truth telling to the religious right that Republicans are using and abusing them.

3. In a democacy X-tians will go to hell for Abu Ghraid if they vote for Bush
Do we need to put those torture pictures in every Christian's mailbox in America and threaten them with damnation? Bush is the closest thing to a Pontious Pilate as America has ever had and these "Bush Christians" need to be called on it. Vote Bush and go to Hell.

4. As a person from a rural area...
...I take that as an insult. Most people around here are very liberal economically, dispite being very religious (Luthrans tend to be a lot more liberal on many issues than the southern babtist crap).

5. I apologize for my provincialism
I think your state may be exceptional. I'm talking about rural based ignorance from my perspective as a northeast "liberal" living the baptist south. This doesn't make the terms rural or ignorance synonomous. I live with urban based ignorance every day.

City mouse country mouse differences today exist in almost every region and neighborhood because of the mobility of the population. There are a lot of rural areas where I would rather live.
