Rev. Wright is a loose cannon.
It doesn't matter if he's speaking the truth, he's out of his league when he tries to take on the MSM. He tries to transfer his controversial statements to his church, saying that this is not an attack on him, it's an attack on the black church. But, these are his statements.

Obama's approach can only be to continue to say Wright doesn't speak for him but the MSM will play this to the hilt. This hurts Obama, the only question is, how much. The Obama campaign had to be shaking their heads during the Wright speech this morning. Why now? Wright couldn't wait until after the next primaries?
I believe Wright said his mother told him to do this now, in an answer this morning. Again, not his responsibility, his mother made him do it.

1. I call bullshit on this.
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 09:13 AM by SoonerPride
They would play the Wright clips over and whether or not Wright came out in his own defense.

With more exposure, more people will realize Wright is a thinking man and not some cartoon figure of the angry black man.

The only people that will be offended are racists and Obama didn't have their vote anyway.

8. How about undecides in Indiana? How can this help Obama?
The MSM is overplaying this but Wright just plays into their hands when he shows such scorn for them. He kept mentioned the media in his speech today and you know they will not fail to pick out the worst of his statements.

10. If anyone decides who to vote for based upon the statements of a pastor is a moron.
Period.

I hope this blows over the the campaign ends with an Obama victory in Indiana but, politically, the timing seems terrible.

14. Obama doesn't need undecideds for indiana...
he has already won the nomination.... this helps Obama by oversaturating the market. People will soon get really board with Wright...and any mention of it in the fall will get the "that's old news" approach.

It's interesting, though, that when Pat Robertson or Jim Dobson or
any of the other far Right fundie nutbags spew nonsense and poison and discriminatory remarks all over the fawning media, barely a peep is heard by those now in a dither over Rev. Wright.

Why, if one didn't know better, one might suspect that the media favored cthe GOP's agenda over the Democrats' agenda.

No black candidate is gonna get a free pass. They'll dredge up every kind of muck and slime whilst leaving whites untouched by the "guilt by association" meme.

It's called racism.

4. This is Obama's death Knell. I predict a bad loss in Indy and a close loss in
NC. He just killed Obama and that is tough for me to admit. Since Hillary and McCain are basically the same it does not matter who wins in Nov.

7. Susan Rice on MSNBC...
Doing a good job of saying that Obama can't denounce Wright because he needs to respect all views/opinions and that Obama is his own man but she clearly sounds defensive... The MSM will spin this to the moon sp this will be a great test for him: to come out on top. I'm a Hillary supporter but admire Obama and would vote for him if he's the Nom. but I have to say, this can't look good for the block of working class white voters in Indiana... My stomach sinks when these distractions take center stage...

9. That's the way to go, gag him.
Let's gag people with an opinion, let's stifle free speech, after all it's not really a big deal. I watched his speech, people who were different were constantly labeled as lacking something, weren't normal.

There never seems to be a right time to talk about the MYTH that is America, land of milk and honey, that "SHINING BEACON ON THE HILL", what a load!!!

It's more then time for Americans to realize that the fairytale that so many believe is drenched in the blood of thousands, and that America has been responsible for deaths around the world by its blind support of tyrants and dictators who made sure that DEMOCRACY was what was defined by the CIA, Pentagon, and the State Department.

And screw the MSM, for the most part nothing but corporate hacks who when not spewing their talking points have their mouths so full of ass that you can't tell the difference.

Yes, they always "win," because they decide what to show a mostly uncomprehending public, but he's getting his pound of flesh, too, and, deep down, many of them know they have been exposed.

20. "Rev. Wright is a loose cannon." I heard that from the...
MSM, too. The difference here is that YOU believed it because some talking head raised it, and it's precisely why I DON'T believe it. That and the fact that I listened to what Wright was saying last night, today, and the complete sermons from which the sound bites were taken months ago. Have you done that? Probably not - and neither have the talking heads or any of the anti-Wright (anti-Obama) flame-baiters here and around the internets - they can't be bothered to find out the real story. In fact, they don't want to - it's not relevant to their real efforts.

If it hurts Obama, and I'm not sure it will, it will be the fault of the cable news pundits, whose goal is to prolong the agony of the Democratic nomination process, and, if possible, to preside over the implosion of the party. My hope is that Hillary Clinton herself weighs in on this - if she does, it will (as usual) hurt her more than it hurts Obama.

Oh, and I really think you're wrong when you say that Wright is "out of his league when he tries to take on the MSM." They are the ones who are out of their league. Seriously - have you heard him speak?

22. I didn't hear it from the MSM. It's my opinion.
Yes, I heard the entire talk today. Wright comes off as arrogant and disdainful of the media. You don't go on national TV with that attitude and expect to win.

So, don't assume you have it all figured out. I think Wright is a loose cannon and he is damaging Obama's candidacy. That's my thinking, not gotten from the MSM. Obama will lose votes in Indiana because of Wright.

29. "...he is damaging Obama's candidacy" only to the degree...
that the MSM and radio talk shows amplify the issue and transfer some false idea of accountability to Obama. I'll give you "arrogant and disdainful of the media" - most of us around here are, to some degree, arrogant at times, and most of us are disdainful of the media. The votes Obama loses because of Wright will be because of members of the corporate punditocracy pretending to be reporters. Wright may be egotistical, but he is not wrong.

21. Everyone who KNOWS a candidate has the potential to become a loose cannon
Edited on Mon Apr-28-08 11:46 AM by SoCalDem
as long as we allow the media to pick our candidates and our presidents, we will never be free from their influence. they have the ability to tell us anything the WANT to tell us..and to keep necessary information FROM us..

MSNBC/NBC will NEVER tell us about the shifty stuff that GE is doing behind the scenes
ABC will never show us Disney's dirty laundry and they never brag about being Rush Limbaugh's boss (EIB=ABC)
CNN will waste NO valuable airtime to inform us about the nasty things their corporate sponsors are doing.

But they WILL spend 24-7 on character assassination of any candidate they choose to pick on that particular day..

Look at your own life... Is there someone in your past who COULD do you damage if they were on tv talking about you?

25. My thoughts... Rev. Wright doesn't have to ask permission to speak
Everyone has the right to defend their name and he waited a long time to do it.

He did it with kindness, not meanness.

He was more than gracious when interviewed by Bill Moyers. Should he have waited until White America gave him permission to speak! He is not in jail and he does not have to ask permission from a judge to speak!

Should he have gotten Barack Obama's approval to speak? No!

Some "Democrats" forget that he was being honored by the NAACP.

That is a very high honor and he certainly had the right to speak while accepting that award.
The NAACP honors people of all races and religions.

That is the essence of CIVIL RIGHTS.

The last time I checked, that is what the Democratic Party stands for.

That is what the Constitution should stand for...

As an African American who has attended the NAACP Dinners in Detroit for many years, I am thrilled that he was honored, on many levels.

The NAACP does not make decisions based on what White America believes they should do. Thurgood Marshall fought for the rights of the NAACP and MLK died for the right for ALL people to be treated fairly, even garbage workers.

Rev. Wright didn't ask CNN to bring their cameras into the dinner. CNN made that choice.

For once, CNN "allowed" us to hear his full speech.

Now we have the spin begin. Others can let the MSM control their brain but I won't give them that power over my brain.

SPINNERS give it a go because the NAACP does not need the approval of WHITE people or the majority of BLACK people. It was the vote of the BOARD MEMBERS of the NAACP and that is their privilege.

I salute the Board of the NAACP for honoring him before 11,000 people, of all races and religions!

God bless you NAACP and I am sending you a donation of $500 today.

I have spoken to my mother, 89 years old, about some of the statements that I just read here at DU and she directed my steps," Get out my checkbook, send the NAACP $1000 this morning!"

goclark ~ proud to be an American,an African American, a member of the NAACP and a Democrat that believes that we are "one nation under God."
