Media Flip Flops on Kerry
Kerry: Beauty and the Beast

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a senator named John who found himself on Al Gore's short list of potential running mates.

The campaign press in the summer of 2000 was entranced with John. It tumbled all over itself to describe John as the perfect match for what it saw as the somewhat wooden, robot-like Gore. One newspaper described John as a man with "an easy manner and good looks," a politician whose "charisma rub off on ," a person who could "bring some charm to the ticket." John's selection, it opined, would signal that Gore "thinks the election will be decided on personality." A television reporter also regarded this John as "charismatic." Another newspaper saw him as "younger and more telegenic than Dick Cheney." Yet a third newspaper called him "handsome," with "a record tailor-made to undermine the standard Republican attack on liberal Democrats."

This John's surname was Kerry -- though if you guessed Edwards, you are more than excused -- and the press outlets that offered the above descriptions were the St. Petersburg Times, NBC News, the Boston Globe, and the (New York) Daily News, respectively.

What a difference 1,460 days make.

The "handsome," "charismatic" candidate who four years ago had an "easy manner," "charm," and a record impregnable to Republican attack has undergone a hideous transmogrification, as described by reporters.

1. Because of the media, like your favorite New York Times
stories...we have a right wing dictatorship in our country today. Our so called liberal media is abhorrently right wing. They skew their stats, facts and polls. They call themselves liberals when they are really not, and they leave most of their meaningful facts either buried on pg A10 or A20 or buried the real truth of a story toward the bottom of their articles with headlines that are quite opposite to the truth of the story.

It is our duty to tell the media that we know they are for the right wing and for Bush and that we plan on telling everyone we come in contact with the truth about our USA right wing, wrong facts media.

Thanks. I guess the Democratic nominee is never likeable, according to the media.

But everyone wants to have a beer with George W. Bush.

3. Interesting isn't it?
I was looking to see how they reported the VP race in 2000, ran across some of those "charismatic" Kerry articles. Could have knocked me over. Of course, I've always liked him and found him sincere and warm. People who go to see him report back that he's nothing like the media reports. You've just reported what the media said in 2000. We all know the media lies and bashes Dems.

But some DUers will go on spouting Kerry is wooden and aloof, and then have the nerve to call the right sheeple. :eyes:

5. Kerry IMO has always had a nice personality
He's some what of a smartass heh, I liked what he said in response to Cheney telling Pat Leahy to fuck off, you think he's saying that now, well wait to November 2nd and wait to hear what he says then. On second I thought I realized I have that day off of school.

7. The media is even more right wing now than back then
The U.S. media wants Bush to win and they will do what it takes to make that happen.

8. I never understood the
"Kerry lacks charisma" argument; the first thing that really drew me to Kerry in the primaries was a speech I saw him give. I can't stand it when people on DU are using the same arguments as the right wing when they talk about Kerry, but posts like this one give me hope.

10. I didn't base my opinion of Kerry as a bore on the Right wing Media
I work in Mass and live in CT. I've seen and heard enough of Kerry to know that he's uninspiring and a political coward.

12. His cronies used Repuke tactics to help bring Dean's campaign down
so Kerry is Bush-lite and a good reason to be tepid at best about him as a candidate.

"F--k, Kerry!" is my campaing motto.

13. no, more people liked Kerry than Dean
dean went down because not enough people wanted to vote for him. even after wes clark skipped iowa and came in third in new hampshire, he still did better than dean in many of the states that voted the week after. and of course kerry got first in many of those.

people like myself worked hard for kerry and continue to do so. but i understand it makes some dean supporters feel better to see themselves as victims rather than admit he was a weak candidate.

14. In New Hampshire polls showed that voters preferred Dean over Kerry
but were sold on Kerry's electibility. The pro-Kerry Media barons that funded Kerry after Dean's remark that he would break up the Media monopolies made sure to drive the electibility argument to Kerry's side. They offered no proof of Kerry's electibility, since in early December 2003, Dean had closed within 6 pts of Bush and in many polls was tied with or ahead of Kerry against Bush in most polls.

Right now, Kerry's unfavorable ratings are higher than Bush's, so more people don't like Kerry than you think and even among those who voted for him in the primary, many voted don't like Kerry per se. They are ABB, not pro-Kerry.

15. hahha, complaining about electability ?
Edited on Thu Jul-01-04 12:37 PM by JI7
the below thread is about dean endorsing someone over a more progressive candidate because of electability. at least in the case of kerry he was the much more progressive candidate over dean.
