Hillary is Joan of Arc.
A lone heroine surrounded by the hate-filled, frenzied masses of the blogosphere/MSM/politico Obama nation salivating over an upcoming áuto-da-fe, frenetically waving their torches and piling up the wood.
However the story line differs in that I can see our heroine breaking free.

October 10, 2002

Floor Speech of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
on S.J. Res. 45, A Resolution to Authorize the Use of
United States Armed Forces Against Iraq
As Delivered

Today we are asked whether to give the President of the United States authority to use force in Iraq should diplomatic efforts fail to dismantle Saddam Hussein's chemical and biological weapons and his nuclear program.

I am honored to represent nearly 19 million New Yorkers, a thoughtful democracy of voices and opinions who make themselves heard on the great issues of our day especially this one. Many have contacted my office about this resolution, both in support of and in opposition to it, and I am grateful to all who have expressed an opinion.

I also greatly respect the differing opinions within this body. The debate they engender will aid our search for a wise, effective policy. Therefore, on no account should dissent be discouraged or disparaged. It is central to our freedom and to our progress, for on more than one occasion, history has proven our great dissenters to be right.

Now, I believe the facts that have brought us to this fateful vote are not in doubt. Saddam Hussein is a tyrant who has tortured and killed his own people, even his own family members, to maintain his iron grip on power. He used chemical weapons on Iraqi Kurds and on Iranians, killing over 20 thousand people. Unfortunately, during the 1980's, while he engaged in such horrific activity, he enjoyed the support of the American government, because he had oil and was seen as a counterweight to the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran.

In 1991, Saddam Hussein invaded and occupied Kuwait, losing the support of the United States. The first President Bush assembled a global coalition, including many Arab states, and threw Saddam out after forty-three days of bombing and a hundred hours of ground operations. The U.S.-led coalition then withdrew, leaving the Kurds and the Shiites, who had risen against Saddam Hussein at our urging, to Saddam's revenge.

As a condition for ending the conflict, the United Nations imposed a number of requirements on Iraq, among them disarmament of all weapons of mass destruction, stocks used to make such weapons, and laboratories necessary to do the work. Saddam Hussein agreed, and an inspection system was set up to ensure compliance. And though he repeatedly lied, delayed, and obstructed the inspections work, the inspectors found and destroyed far more weapons of mass destruction capability than were destroyed in the Gulf War, including thousands of chemical weapons, large volumes of chemical and biological stocks, a number of missiles and warheads, a major lab equipped to produce anthrax and other bio-weapons, as well as substantial nuclear facilities.

64. I watched that speech many years ago and was so surprised
when, near the end she stated:

"This is a very difficult vote. This is probably the hardest decision I have ever had to make -- any vote that may lead to war should be hard -- but I cast it with conviction."

All one could conclude is that she knew something many of us didn't. All the evidence at that point was vague and mushroom cloud talk was definitely suspect after hearing other people that would also have a good idea of what Saddam was likely to have in the way of WMD's.

67. The way I look at it
You have two scenario's, and neither of them are that flattering.

A) She was tricked which means she should have done her homework and read the NIE like Paul Wellstone did.

or

B) She was too scared to stand up and speak truth to power.

Either way, rewarding her with a presidency would be like throwing a party when your kid fails out of highschool.

Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc
Mark Twain

http://www.amazon.com/Personal-Recollections-Joan-Twain-MobileReference/dp/B0015T6G12/ref=dp_kinw_strp_1

Twain, through a ficitional narrator takes us through the story of Joan's simple and modest upbringing to her response to God's command that she save France from the English. We follow her into battle, see her become the teenage commander-in-chief of an army, win victories, struggle with a weak French king, and finally fall victim to the leadership in Burgundy and the corruption within the church. Twain brings us through her entire trial, where we see young Joan withstand grueling questioning and physical and psychological torture for months on end. Through it all she never falls victim to traps deliberately set for her that are solely designed to prove her an idolater, sorcerer and heretic. Ultimately, we walk with her as she takes the last journey of her life, to the stake to die by fire.

This work is based on well preserved information about the experiences of Joan of Arc. Twain makes a point of telling us that "The Official Record of the Trials and Rehabilitation of Joan of Arc is the most remarkable history that exists in any language; A deeply fascinating story.............found in its entirety in the Official Trials and Rehabilitation". We therefore know that his sources are well researched and ones we ourselves can access. Twain beautifully reconstructs Joan's early life based on this information, doing her great honor throughout the novel. We realize, too, that as the story progresses, we are presented her trials in their full, true detail. Twain also tells us that Joan's story was almost one that was lost, having not been very well known for approximately four hundred years after it occurred.

her God and her country before her own well being.

HRC was never distressed by the fate of her country, but because of the fact that she might not have been called to lead it. Not to mention no one wants to harm HRC in any way. The strongest thing being asked was that she concede that she is not going to win the nomination - and most have backed of that. She is now simply being asked to avoid Rovian attacks on other Democrats - and in the last three days she has hit Obama, Kerry and Gore. She is perfectly welcome to be a Senator in good standing.

68. Didn't Joan of Arc hear voices?
Don't some historians believe that Joan suffered from schizophrenia? Maybe you should pick another heroin to compare Hillary to; I think Zena warrior princess is a good fit.

79. All women "hear voices"
especially at "that time of month."

You can consult the MALLEUS MALEFICARUM on this.

It's right there under "how to try a witch."

Right before the chapter on "how to burn a witch."

80. Masses did not hate Joan of Arc. The English and the sold nobility did.
This is where your comparison stops.

81. Of all the myths that have been heaped upon Hillary
Edited on Wed Apr-16-08 06:56 AM by susankh4
I predict that this is the one that will stick. In the history books.

There are reams yet to write on the correlations....

This portrait says it all:

And a book could be written about all the messages in it. The look on Hillary's face is particularly telling, I think. Sort of sadly amused. Maybe even bored? As in "are you finished with your games yet, boys?"

If you know who the artist is... plz. direct me! I can't seem to find a trackback.

85. Well, I can agree with that's how she may view herself ...
... but everyone's just standing around awestruck, wondering why she's tying herself to the pole and dousing herself with oil.
