Obama: 'It's politics' not race

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Don’t read Clinton’s “elitist” attacks as racist Obama cautioned a voter at a town hall meeting with veterans and military families.

An older man, taking the mic for the first question, claimed Clinton’s attacks were trying to cast Obama as an “uppity” Black man.

“This isn’t political whatsoever, myself being obviously a white person, this term is the way it’s being used against you isn’t far from ‘uppity,’” the man began. “Okay. And I think the Clintons are getting away with something that they must be called on. They will continue to do this until somebody states, ‘Mrs. Clinton you’re really close to prejudice here. This is wrong. This man does not have anything elitist about his upbringing. He never will, and I desire a well-educated person as president of the United States. I am sorry. It’s got to stop.”

Obama disagreed and said it was not about race, but chalked it up to politics. “I don’t think there are racial overtones going on to the attacks right now. I think it’s politics. This is what we do politically, when we start getting behind in races, then we start going on the attack.”

He went on to say he found it amusing to be called an elitist, since he was raised by a single mother and had been on food stamps as a child.

He could have jumped all over this like a Clinton.

He could have attacked her relentlessly on Snipergate.

He could have been battering her with Impeachment and Lewinsky for the past 4 months.

But Barack Obama did not do any of this.

He wants to lead the American People by example. No more of the old politics of "do as I say, not as I do".

We finally have a Candidate who can inspire and organize the People.
This is the true purpose of the Office of the Presidency. It takes a Real Leader to galvanize the Will of the People into an Unstoppable Force of Change.
No Congress can serve as a stumbling block to a Strong President with the People at his back.

Not an Elitist, but the very Cream of the Middle Class Crop.
He is a living example of what is possible in this Country like nowhere else on Earth.

Once upon a Time, Obama's Mother told him he could be whatever he wanted to be when he grew up, even President of the United States.

I am more inclined to agree with the questioner on the character of the attack, but agree with Obama that the origin is political necessity. That is, if Hillary's supporters engage in racism it is more a matter of political expediency rather than any actually held belief or true prejudice.

I would hope that Obama supporters on this site would follow his lead. There was a thread earlier today which stated that elitist was a RW code word for uppity. It was a strongly supported sentiment, despite it being pretty patently ridiculous on it's face and now being disavowed by the person it was used against. Obama is right on this one.
