"The Worst Thing I've Heard Obama Say
By Melinda Henneberger

Yes, it is galling to be tagged as out of touch by Hillary "Is that sniper fire I hear?' Clinton. Only, she happens to be right: Barack Obama's suggestion that economically suffering small-town Americans are haters who cling to God and guns out of bitterness is a way bigger deal than he seems to realize, even now. Five years into an unpopular war, and with the economy tanking, the widely held and absolutely poisonous perception that Democrats tend to look down on Mr. and Mrs. Middle America—and on their religious faith in particular—may be the most serious obstacle to the party's presidential hopes this year. Yet here's Obama not apologizing: "If I worded things in a way that made people offended, I deeply regret that," he told the Winston-Salem Journal. Poor wording was not the problem; on the contrary, it was his precision that was so unfortunate, and his ability to pack half a dozen unintended insults into a single sentence uncanny. And in San Francisco, no less? Roger Ailes couldn't have planned it better, unless he'd maybe followed up the event with some impromptu windsurfing in the bay. Here's what preceded the problem sentence:

You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate, and they have not.

With this, who could argue? So far, so good. But then, straight into the ditch:

"So it's not surprising then that they get bitter,'' (Angry, OK, but bitter? I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe someone they liked that way.)

"they cling to guns'' (If they had jobs, maybe they wouldn't be gun nuts?)

"or religion'' (Or religious nuts, either? This is an especially weird conclusion since Obama himself is a devout Christian; was he pandering to the segment of the party that does see believers that way?)

"or antipathy to people who aren't like them'' (So no wonder such a lot of them are haters?)

"or anti-immigrant sentiment'' (Who blame their troubles on people who'll live in concrete-block squalor while picking fruit for next to nothing.)

"or anti-trade sentiment'' (And don't see the big picture on globalization and free trade like you Davos-goers do.)

"as a way to explain their frustrations.'' (In lieu of a Harvard Law degree.)

I grew up in the kind of town Obama is talking about and went back there to talk to people about their political motivations for my book about women voters in pockets of the country where, as Obama says, the factories have closed, the jobs have gone away, and people see scant evidence that anyone in either party actually gives a hoot. As I wrote in the book, my hometown of Mount Carmel, Ill., population 8,000, sits on a bluff overlooking the Wabash River. It's a pretty little farm town—or was, before the Target moved in, wiped out Market Street, and then moved on, like a bad storm. When I brought my New Yorker husband home for the holidays for the first time 20 years ago, he couldn't believe how long it took us to run a couple of errands on our bustling main street; compact as it was, we stopped so often to talk that he said he felt like he'd wandered onto the set of Bedford Falls in It's a Wonderful Life, with a crowd of neighbors yoo-hooing, "Merry Christmas, George!'' But these days, whole minutes can go by in which nothing moves on Market Street; social services are the only growth industry, and the traffic lights only blink now, instead of changing from red to green, so you don't have to sit there waiting when there's no other car in sight. The tool factory that had been a major employer since the 1930s closed a few years back, and my best friend from high school finally had to move away just last fall, after the coal mine where her husband worked shut down.

When I went back there, and visited similar small towns in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, one thing I heard over and over—from registered Democrats!—was that their national party leaders were elitists who couldn't seem to relate to their struggles. Again and again, they brought up Kerry's windsurfing and polyglot wife and Hollywood friends and brand spanking new hunting attire as proof positive of the kind of elitism that was turning them into Republicans. Perhaps worst of all in their eyes was his habit of mocking Bush's intelligence; every time Kerry laughed about how dumb the president supposedly was, they assumed he thought the same of them. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Here's how a high-school teacher in Fairfield, Ill., put it: "I used to be a Democrat, and I'm still very much independent. I voted for Clinton . I'm religious but not a fanatic; I see a lot of gray. My mother has Alzheimer's, so I'm for stem-cell research, and I'm not against people's right to an abortion.'' But Kerry "just struck me as arrogant,'' while Bush inspired "the feeling that this was a more open person who would not be "I'm important and you're not.' '' And yes, Fox News exists to whip up such sentiments, but it only works when Democrats foolishly hand them fresh material. I don't for a second doubt that Obama genuinely cares about the people he just put down -- or question whether it's his party's policies that would help low-income Americans more. Which makes this Democratic penchant for cultural condescension all the more baffling and inexcusable.

Sure, many Americans in places like my hometown are angry and they do "cling'' to guns and God, though not in that order. It's connecting the two that's belittling in the extreme to the "typical white person''—to cite a phrase I chose to overlook at the time. Now, if Obama is sticking by the essence of what he said out of stubbornness or arrogance, that's one kind of problem. But if he really doesn't see why this could be a game-changer, that's worse. And though I've been pretty unrelievedly positive about the guy, it's the first thing he's said that's made me question his ability to win."

Look, HRC is our candidate. Period. It was fun while it lasted, but we need a REAL leader with REAL experience and not all this hollow talk and empty promises.

All the "educated" dems may like Obama, but us "dumb fucks" don't like to be portrayed as being stupid, especially when it takes more intelligence to survive with the little that is left to us.

Edwards always said that the guy who worked in the mill was just as important as the guy who owns the mill. THAT is the message that would have won us the Presidency, not what Obama spewed.

28. No, I'm smart enough to know the difference
between clinging to something and being pissed at politicians. You don't get it. People go to church for various reasons, whether of not their lives are good or bad. Yes, they do go to church more when their lives are going badly, but it's not an either or, which is how Obama made it sound. They aren't going to church BECAUSE the politicians aren't living up to their promises. And it's wrong to make that comparison, no matter how "lofty" you put it.

The same with guns, some people just feel safer with a gun around, or they hunt. They haven't increased their love for their guns because politicians have lied to them. To make it sound like that is what makes dems look bad.

What has become the "sound bite" is that "rural people are so stupid that they cling to religion and guns". And, to top it off, it was said at a SF money raising function with rich people, ala Bush and his "have more base." People aren't stupid because they don't have the education, but it seems that dems always put their foot in their mouth with over nuanced speech. Gore had it and Kerry had it, and Obama is dripping in it.

McCain will come out and say his "straight talk" and people will not feel stupid while listening to him. On the other hand, listening to Obama is like trying to make heads or tails out of poetry, you know something is being said, but for the life of you, you can't figure out what it is. And, when you listen and can't understand, not only do you feel stupid, you don't trust that person and can't agree with what they are saying.

Edwards knew exactly what to say to bring just about everyone to his side. He stated a fact, what was wrong, and how he wanted to fix it. Nothing lofty, just easy to understand and repeat. You never felt like you were stupid when you left his campaign speeches, you felt like you understood the problems and how to fix them, you felt more in power. You never felt as if he thought he was better than you. You always felt as if he would roll up his sleeves and work side by side with you, no matter what it was. Obama, you could never imagine that he would ever do physical labor, so he has no idea what a blue collar worker goes through.

hit you in the head!

A lot of small town folks vote for issues that are in their blood. They have been ingrained. 'The democrats will take away your guns.' 'The democrats are baby killers.' 'The democrats are atheists because they don't want prayer in schools.' 'They'll let Jack & Jim get married. That's fucking disgusting.'

These people are one issue voters. Most of my family from IN are one issue voters, usually either gays or guns, maybe pro-life. These are the issues that they can tell politicians apart. Therefore it is no surprise that it is how they make there choice. The problem is that when they do this they usually vote for social conservatives i.e. republicans. Then the republicans or centrist DLCers vote with the corporations & sell the one issue voters down the shit-hole economically & the only place they can get a fucking job is at Wal-mart. The rich get richer & the politicians still trick you into voting on that one issue that you know where they stand. These voters don't read position papers, so their vote is decided on the issues that they can easily tell two candidates apart. Obama isn't an elitist & sure as the hell not more than Senator 109 million Clinton.

49. YOU don't get it, elitist has NOTHING to do with money
and everything to do with how you talk to people and what your attitude is like. Money doesn't make anyone elitist, attitude does. And, Obama has the attitude that his shit doesn't stink, and so do many of his supporters. Bush got dems and indies to vote for him because he made them feel like he was one of them. One issue voters, yeah there's a few on both sides of the aisle, but to lump all repubs into one pile, is not looking at the big picture, and the reason why we lose.

Thank you for playing the game.....1 in 3.

43. Being bitter implies pessimism, a sour attitude that things will never change.
Why would people rely on a smooth talker to pull them out of their bitterness, especially one who is entrenched with the establishment such as Kennedy, Kerry, Leahy, and those other big shots? You can't slide a piece of paper between Barack and Hillary when it comes to establishment creds, not anymore.

The people of Pennsylvania voted for whom they voted for. They made their choices. Same goes for all of America. This country went to hell when Reagan was voted in. Big smooth talker who mocked a good man named Jimmy Carter. "There you go again." Who else remembers that famous put-down? Smooth talkers are great at mocking put-downs.

But there's Obama, smooth-talkin' his sweet self in front of a bunch of haves and have mores, pretending he knows what makes rural folks tick. As bush would say, heh heh heh.

Just what we look for in a president, mockery, the put-down. I thought the OP was an interesting perspective, but the mocking of this person by those who support Obama is as telling as Obama's mocking of Senator Clinton. "Hilllary... thinks she's Annie Oakley"...ZING! How very presidential.

56. Small town Americans "get bitter" and "cling... to religion". Racist?
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 05:35 PM by Seabiscuit
How could a guy who professes to be a "devout" Christian who sits in an all-black Xtian church in Chicago listening to the mad ravings of Rev. Wright for 20 years charactarize the religion of small town Americans in such a demeaning way?

How else unless he views any church attended by "typical white people" as infinitely inferior to his own. Just another case of the kind of racism Obama's been spreading in this campaign (even at his own grandmother's expense).

62. You know when jokes are the funniest? When they are TRUE. And THAT was hilarious.
She's a hypocrite. She's trying to make it sound like she even once went "out on the duck blind" sometime in the last hundred years. When in fact she's been an outspoken supporter of gun control.

And comparing Annie Oakley to Hillary? hilarious mental image.

I am glad for the long campaign, we are just starting to see who this guy really is. A loser in more ways than one.

66. Apology? Hmmmm - I thought he never did apologize.
I have this nagging vision of a President Obama being asked by the press -
"Sir, what has been your biggest mistake?" and dead silence from the Prez.

74. First off, he was joking. Secondly, if he is bitter, he'd have every right to be
Look at how Clinton is carrying on? I seriously admire Obama's restraint. His teasing of her was no worse than when Clinton "joked" that he needed to take his campaign out of the gutter.
