Threats toward Howard Dean by Clinton's big donors this week should alarm us greatly. Updated at 2:17 AM
I think it is getting very obvious that this primary season is not an ordinary one. The fact that there is the wife of a former president running with her husband alongside her is unique in itself.

The fact that her donors have made threatening moves toward the party chairman to break the rules about Florida and Michigan...to in effect let the primaries count...is more than unique. I don't remember a time when big money so openly threatened a party chairman. We have let this slip under the radar basically. There was a post here by WesDem about that meeting, but it disappeared fairly quickly.

We should not ignore this. This is a primary season in which two states deliberately, intentionally, and in a planned way broke the rules of the party for conducting a primary. In the case of my state, they immediately put the blame on the chairman and tried to crash the fundraising.

This is big money demanding that the party chairman acquiesce to their desires to have Florida and Michigan count. It has gone on a while, and it hit a larger scale this week.

I am going to add to what the original post on this subject said. It was essentially a hijacking of a meeting which was planned with the DNC and both campaigns. It was about finances, not the two states who were sanctioned. It is said in the posts about it that the Obama fundraisers sat mostly silently, while at least two of Hillary financial guys began questioning Dean about why he wasn't taking a more aggressive stance on fixing the problem the two states had caused.

After Dean's initial remarks, Bernard Bergreen, a Hillary bundler, rose and said that Dean's address left out any discussion of Michigan and Florida, which was the critical bone of contention between the two campaigns.

Dean said that in his view, the question could be settled only after the primaries had finished in June, and after the superdelegates had made their decision.

At that point Clinton campaign finance chair Hassan Nemazee spoke up. He said Dean's response sounded to him as if the DNC chairman were "essentially trying to kick the can down the road" and that the chairman was not exhibiting the type of leadership one would expect.
Nemazee said that since the campaigns obviously could not reach a solution on their own before June, Dean's argument amounted to passing the buck.

Dean then responded, heatedly, that in his experience, those who sought the intervention of party leadership were motivated by their own particular agendas. And that was not the sort of leadership he intended to provide.

Clinton donors vs Dean

Yet the most alarming statement to me was by the former DNC finance chair, Maureen White. It told me a lot, though it was very short.

It told me this is going to the convention.

It told me to expect a lot of ugliness on the way.

White had a different take, saying that politics was a nasty and sometimes very unfair business. Nobody ever said democracy would be easy, she said, but called on all of those present as leaders in the party to reduce the level of rancor, even if it went to a convention.

According to the source, White's intervention met with applause. At least from the Clinton donors.

Bundler's summit

The big Clinton donors have done this to the DCCC. They threatened the DCCC because Pelosi said superdelegates should not go against the will of the people.

They threatened the DNC previously, even before the meeting.

True faces of the money men behind the curtain are showing now...threats to Dean and Pelosi.

"I've expressed to Dean my feeling that it's critical that this matter be resolved on a timely basis," Patricof says. "The voters in Florida and Michgan cannot be disenfranchised."

"He's got to exercise some leadership, and the sooner, the better," Patricof continued. "This is a party issue. We cannot afford to alienate this large a voting population in two very important states."

....."Pushing to seat the Florida delegates, at least one top Clinton fund-raiser, Paul Cejas, a Miami businessman who has given the Democratic National Committee $63,500 since 2003, has demanded Democratic officials return his 2007 contribution of $28,500, which they have agreed to do.

“If you’re not going to count my vote, I’m not going to give you my money,” said Mr. Cejas, who was the United States ambassador to Belgium from 1998 to 2001.

Christopher Korge, a Florida real estate developer who is another top fund-raiser for Mrs. Clinton, held an event last year in his home that brought in about $140,000 for the national party, which was set aside in a special account for the general election battle in Florida. But he told committee officials this week that if Florida’s delegate conundrum was not settled satisfactorily he would be asking for the money back.

I knew from the start that money was going to be one of the weapons because Florida Democrats immediately sent out emails trying to crash the party fundraising nationally.

There appears to be no shame about it. The ones demanding that the national party break the rules and give in to their demands are not all troubled by what they are doing. That is one of the worst parts, that it just seems natural to them.

It seems to me they think it is their due. They think it is their right to demand by withholding money, even though what they are demanding is against the rules.

That is being lost in the Obama and Hillary shuffle.....that it is big money, really big money exerting their power on Dean and Obama, two men who built campaigns on small donors.

Perhaps to these big money men the small donors are a danger.

Perhaps it really will be a battle for the heart and soul of the party.

3. I'm a Democracy Bond holder and Dean speaks for me!
I agree with you madfloridian, Big Money bet mostly on Hillary to win the nomination and Obama's upstart campaign has masterly outmaneuvered Hillary's campaign. Mark Penn's company has employees working as campaign managers in McCain's and Clinton's campaigns. Penn's company thought that they could not lose as long as McCain and Hillary were the nominees of the respective parties. Obama and his army of small donors are the giant monkey wrench in their greedy plans and they are going ballistic because everything they've tried ends up blowing back in their faces.

71. This is the crux of the matter.
Each entity - Clinton, the repukes, and the media, had a tidy arrangement going. Penn would "win" either way, the repukes would run whoever they mustered against the weakest candidate that the Dems could produce with coattails that included a husband with all sorts of juicy controversy to rail against that would give them the ultimate revenge, and the media could suck it all up for the buck...

And then Obama rode in.

EVERY supposed "best laid plan" was suddenly laid to waste and all 3 entities are flailing around and foaming at the mouth now, unable to invoke a "Plan B" to recover. Every time they throw the race card, he throws out a picture of his white mother. Every time they throw the age card, he throws out the fact that Bill Clinton was the SAME age when he ran. For every $20 million or $30 million that they raise, he doubles it - without maxing out the contributors.

Throughout history, it's extremely rare that the "little guy" gets the say. But it has happened. Hopefully this will be the year it happens again.

The Democratic Party is better than that. The people want a change from that old style of politics and Senator Obama will give it to them.

And I'll bet you dollars to donuts that if Obama's campaign were trying to shake down Clinton supporters the Clinton people would be screaming bloody murder about it. That's one thing I don't like about the Clinton campaign. They are such hypocrites. They know no shame.

111. I found this one
To the editor:

At the root of the Democratic party's name we find Demos, "the people," a source of Gov. Dean's appeal to many Democrats… and perhaps, of the disdain expressed by some party leaders? Dean has done amazing work empowering people to build the party in states his predecessors flew over and to reinvigorate the party in states long taken for granted (like mine).

The plight of Florida and Michigan is regrettable, but might have been prevented by an engaged populace that lobbied to stop misguided decisions by their state parties. Quoting former candidate Dean, I’d advise those states’ voters, "You have the power" to keep your state party from acting to disenfranchise you again – get involved.

Some party leaders obviously do not appreciate participatory democracy, but they're a little behind the curve.

The Clinton campaign and its advocates seem fixed on bending Gov. Dean to their will. Don’t they know the sun is setting on big bosses and back-room deals?

18. Have these people never met Dr. Dean?
I really see Dr. Dean telling the Clintonistas to take an aerial intercourse in a rotating pastry.

Dr. Dean has already survived a coup attempt by the Clintons to take the DNC away from him. The state parties love him. He has his own power base. And according to the Nation article I read recently, Obama is the love child of the Dean organization from 2004 -- the Internet, the organizing, the social network, the do-it-ourselves way of politics.

Please, Dr. Dean, don't pull a Kerry on us, okay? Stand up for us.

23. DNC already gave money back to Paul Cejas, a Clinton donor. Updated at 2:17 AM
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/...

"Cejas asked for his last donation back. He said he was angry with the party, particularly party Chair Howard Dean, over the failure to resolve Florida's delegate dilemma. "

"Frankly, he's dropped the ball, and I told him, 'You're going to go down in history as the worst chairman of the Democratic Party if you do not fix and seat the delegates of Florida,'" Cejas said.

Cejas, a longtime friend of former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton, was ambassador to Belgium during Clinton's presidency. Because he supports Hillary Clinton, he said he would prefer to have her Florida primary win count, but he feels that Dean should have engineered a do-over vote by now."

Nice guy.

25. Welcome to the real world. Yes. The Clintons are using their big money friends to get the nomination
by hook or crook. These people are used to getting their way and fairness and decorum goes out the door when they don't. Dean will do the right thing and follow the rules but he knows that if Hillary doesn't get the nomination he is likely finished. The good thing about that is that a man who knows he is finished is more likely to follow his conscience and not give a damn.

38. Who would finish him?
If Hillary doesn't get the nomination how would her people be able to finish Dean? They've become this shrill because they know their influence is on the line. Yes, they can take their money and go home but that stunt only works once and it would only totally alienate them from the new Democratic power structure. Obama's already proven that he doesn't need them so he won't listen to them. Dean has the support of most state parties and activists. The only way anyone is going to be in a position to do anything to Howard Dean is if Clinton wins the nomination which she will not.

31. Dean penalized them and the party
Had he stripped half the delegates and told them to campaign in those states this would not be an issue.

But nooooooooo, Dean overreacted and he can stew in his own crap. There is no easy answer that isn't going to leave some large group feeling screwed.

The party as a whole will be the biggest loser.

39. The party will be a big loser if the DLC gets its way.
Bill Clinton won the presidency in 1992 only because Ross Perot ran for president and took a lot of Republican votes from daddy Bush. The DLC took credit for winning on the basis that they had shifted the Democratic Party to the right. The DLC's spin is pure nonsense. Clinton would have lost if it had not been for Perot.

The DLC "leadership" of the party lost us the elections in 2000 and 2004. Howard Dean saved the Democratic Party from "extinction" in 2006 with his fifty state strategy. The DLC is outraged that Dean showed the party the way to win elections. Obama's campaign has learned from Dean's strategy and is demonstrating that it works.

Clinton and the DLC are willing to give the presidency and the Congress back to the Republicans. They are willing to do this, because they are more desirous to maintain power over a diminished party, than to see the party victorious under new leadership.

If the Democrats allow the DLC to take back the party, the Democratic Party will be finished as a political force in this country. In fact, another four years under Republicans will see the diminishing of the U.S. as a world leader, and a serious diminishing of the quality of life in this country.

that's a Republican talking point meant to diminish his victory.

I'm tired of clinton's lies.

I'm tired of her supporters' lies.

And I'm really tired of lies like "they will be disenfranchised" when NO DISENFRANCHISEMENT IS TAKING PLACE.

Regardless of how I feel about it, it's a fact that established legal precedent states that not being allowed to vote in a party primary is NOT, repeat NOT, disenfranchisement.

48. The Clinton Cabal Is Going Beyond TiresomeUpdated at 5:30 PM
When the party needed leadership, Bill was off making speeches, making money, and making inexplicable and indefensible pardons. He was schmoozing with Poppy, touring with anyone who would foot the bill. Hillary was off playing politics, wiggling the levers of power, without ever finding her own and developing it. Since Chelsea was out of the nest, they could ignore each other to their heart's delight.

Al Gore went down in flames. I can understand why Al wanted to keep at least one arm's length away from Bill, but it cost him.

Now the Clinton magic is gone. They are reduced to bullying and bribing and acting out their little psychodramas before an unappreciative public. It is sad, it is ugly, and it is fruitless.

Friends in politics are only as deep as the sacrifice you are willing to make for them. Enemies are for life. Bill and Hillary have a lot of enemies, and hardly any friends. You would think they would stop making more enemies, but the lesson hasn't been learned yet.

59. Dr. Dean Has Done A Wonderful Job
His 50 state strategy worked. Now big money donors are threatening to withhold funds if he does not kowtow to their demands. Something is very wrong here. When you read about all of the crap and corruption going on in this primary season, you would think you were reading a soap opera script. I support Dr. Dean. He developed a winning strategy and won despite Carville trying to pull the rug out from under him.

Thank you for keeping all of us updated. Your research, as always, is outstanding.

If there are 200 or more who are for Obama (or Hillary) let them choose now, and jump-stanrt the finale of this opera.. 94. Big money (DLC) vs us (as represented by Howard Dean) =
Is that emoticon waving goodbye to us?

Because the only solution is this:

(1) We need to unionize around Howard Dean and our money must be bigger than the DLC's

(2) We must organize a batallion of committed active monthly donors to the DNC, who will

(3) withdraw that money from the DNC, and thus create consequences, if the DLC gets Howard Dean ousted (and gets McAuliffe or a DLC candidate into the DNC chair)

75. The "fat cats" are not necessary for president
With a popular candidate or a very unpopular incumbent, the big guys have marginal influence in the general election as of 2004. Kerry raised much more from individuals than he did these plutocrats.

It does have an impact on congressional campaigns but what's the difference. We have 1/2 of the Senate voting with the right wing junta on key issues and about 10% of the House doing the same, the so called "Blue Dogs." So Dean's in a pickle, to a degree.

All the candidates agreed not to campaign in those states. Obama wasn't even on the ballot in Michigan. Counting these delegates, particularly Michigan, very dirty politics. All the "democracy is not easy" nonsense is simply a deception designed to cover up an outrage.

But this is how the The Money Party operates. It is so used to creating its own rules, logic and fairness go out the window and they don't even notice.

80. More about Nemazee and Rattner: Updated at 2:17 AM
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601070&sid=abX...

"A group of big-money Clinton fundraisers is getting a backlash over a letter they sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that included what some Democrats saw as a veiled threat.

The donors, including Hassan Nemazee, founder of Nemazee Capital Corp. in New York, and Steven Rattner, co-founder of buyout firm Quadrangle Group LLC, wrote to Pelosi taking exception to her comments that superdelegates should support the candidate who leads in pledged delegates.

Noting they have been ``strong supporters'' of the party, the signers asked Pelosi ``to clarify your position on superdelegates and reflect in your comments a more open view to the optional independent actions of each of the delegates at the national convention in August.''

Together the signatories have contributed $23.6 million to Democratic causes and candidates since Jan. 1, 1999, according to the Center for Responsive Politics in Washington.

Activist group Moveon.org is circulating a petition that calls the signers ``billionaires bullying our elected leaders into ignoring the will of the voters.'' Fred Wertheimer, a veteran of efforts to overhaul campaign finance laws, called the letter ``wrong and offensive.'' Some top House Democrats say the letter actually has helped spur donations from other contributors.

Nemazee, Clinton's national finance chairman, dismissed the negative reaction to the letter and doesn't have any regrets about sending it."

102. I have a couple of questions.
Thank you Madflordian you have stayed with this story and kept us up to date. Thank you.

1) For Madfloridian: The OP is worried in a way I don't pick up in the responding posts. Is there something you feel we should be doing?

For DU: Larkspur and a few others mentioned Democracy bonds. I didn't know about them. I would bet a lot of new voters don't either. It would be great if more people knew about all that Madfloridan has reported on AND showed their support by purchasing a Democracy Bond. It would show that the new voters are not fly by night while introducing them further into the party. I think a lot of small purchases will say a lot.

Q: Is it a good idea to start a Democracy bond campaign?

I think others are as well. A party can not survive based on lies. A candidate might win that way with her big money, but the party might not survive it.

The anger is building because to win one candidate must harm the other and hurt the party perhaps irreparably.

If others don't see it, that is their right.

Pushing for Fl and MI votes is based on lies.

Many of the same pushed Dean as well, plus the ones named in the link in the OP about the meeting.

"Then the donors --
Marc Aronchick,
Clarence Avant,
Susie Tompkins Buell,
Sim Farar,
Robert L. Johnson,
Chris Korge,
Marc and Cathy Lasry,
Hassan Nemazee,
Alan and Susan Patricof,
JB Pritzker,
Amy Rao,
Lynn de Rothschild,
Haim Saban,
Bernard Schwartz,
Stanley S. Shuman,
Jay Snyder,
Maureen White and Steven Rattner --

reminded Pelosi that they have given generously to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which helps fund Democratic House races.

As you can see many were at the meeting mentioned in the OP.
