Poll question: Who should Obama pick as his VEEP?
Edited on Sat Apr-05-08 10:58 PM by mckeown1128
Edit: I left out none of the aboved... because I am going to do different choices each night... then I am going to poll the winners together. So, if you HAD to choose... which out of the thee...

Tonight's choices... Virginia themed... analysis courtesy of politico:

"Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine

Pro: He is comfortable talking about faith and has youth and energy on his side. An early Obama backer from a battleground state.

Con: Looks even younger than he is. No national security experience.

Former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner

Pro: Private sector and executive experience in a key state. Shares Obama's message of change and has won votes in rural areas.

Con: Currently running for Senate. No national security experience.

Virginia Sen. Jim Webb

Pro: A decorated war veteran and former Republican from a key state, he looks perfect on paper.

Con: Blunt and unpredictable, he might be a reluctant campaigner. "

Every night I will post a new poll to narrow it down.

14. If you are not willing to see the truth in Rev Wright's assertions,
then perhaps you have issues that you have to face.

Certainly Obama will not perpetuate the paradigms of the past by turning the revolution over to rich, white men- particularly rich white men from the confederate south.

Gov. Richardson is the obvious choice. Hispanic, foreign policy credentials, voiciferous Obama supporter and no rich, white baggage.

I worry about his debating skills. He doesn't come off as being very strong and Obama needs someone really strong as his VP.

What I don't understand is where you are getting "evil, rich, white men" from what Wright said?! He never said anything of the sort.

21. Bill Bradley.
I'd take Bill Bradley among many good choices.

Gov. Richardson would also be formidable.

John Edwards has enduring appeal but says he is not interested in the job.

Joe Biden says the same thing but would bring international expertise, much missing in the last 7-8 years.

A general is not out of the question and a couple notable generals are excellent Democrats.

I could live with any of the Virginians you list.

And would add Tom Harkin of Iowa and Barbara Boxer of California. Boxer is a high choice for me owing to her significant appeal to progressives, and Harkin can talk turkey with just about anybody.

Gov. Sebelius should not be counted out.

I think there is a chance that Tom Daschle will be on Obama's short list. Daschle might make a much more interesting vice president than majority leader.

28. I predict it will be a woman. The reason why is...
McCain would choose a woman in order to pick-off the pissed off hillary supporters who would feel that they were robbed of their opportunity to vote for a woman for president. If he were smart, he would certainly do this. In order to control a mass exodus of white, female voters to a McCain/MadameX, ticket, Obama would need to counter with a female vice.

We need to keep Jim Webb in the Senate, unless we are guaranteed a democrat can hold it after his term is up.

I just don't really like the idea of running two rookie senators on the ticket, neither of which have finished his first term. And we just managed to get a Dem in the Senate from Virginia, which wasn't easy. We need him to stay put for now.

As for the other two, no DLC'ers unless they have renounced the Clintonian tactics (i.e.Richardson)

40. I don't like any of them. Webb has too many ex-wives. And those books.
They'd be the focus, especially the salacious passages.

He'd eclipse Obama too, and not in a good way.

Warner is pleasant, but he just won't do it. Neither will Kaine.

Surely there are other VA politicians to consider...hell, Battlin', hard drinkin' Jim Moran would be as good a choice as these folks...

45. If you can't figure out how that would play on a national level, I cannot help you.
"Do as I say, not as I do" is the watchword.

No more than two marriages, an ex wife who says nice things about the candidate, and a wife that isn't TOO young.

That's the paradigm. And you can only break so many paradigms before your candidacy starts looking a little too 'off to the side.'

McCain in any other circumstance should have a problem, but since he's so old, even once-young Cindy is now safely middle-aged.

Webb is a LOUSY choice. LOUSY. He's a great Senator from VA, because he appeals to Republicans and Democrats, and he has that USMC/USN connection that wins him the Tidewater and helps him up by the Pentagon.

His VA appeal does not translate outside the state. You can think otherwise if it pleases you. I will disagree.

42. I vote for Bill Richardson.
Here's my reasoning:

1) He's got the experience - was in the Clinton administration as the Secretary of Energy and was the Ambassador to the UN.

2) Strong foreign policy credentials - Even Chimp begged him to help calm the North Koreans down.

3) He's Hispanic - He'll bring in the Latinos.

4) Strategic location - He is the governor of New Mexico, and really reflects the Mountain West which is now VERY ripe to turn blue.

5) He endorsed Obama even he waited long enough for Clintons to stop their childish behavior and used the endorsement to help Obama.

I could add more, but I think the top 4 is reasonable enough, so he has my full endorsement as VP of Obama's

46. Out of those, I'd go with Tim Kaine.
Warner's a shoe-in to win a spot in the Senate in the 2008 election over Jim Gilmore for John Warner's then-vacant seat. And on that note, I'd rather keep Webb in the Senate too. I realize Kaine would replace Webb with a Dem., but I'd rather have an incumbent that the people actually voted into office come re-election in 2012.
