Poll question: VP poll: John McCain vs. 'Ham Sandwich Democrat'
I'd like to find out, in terms of actual numbers rather than words, how DU-ers feel about the idea of John McCain as Kerry's running mate, as opposed to ANY ('ham sandwich') Democrat Sen. Kerry would be likely to select. This poll assumes that Sen. Kerry doesn't lose his mind and nominate Zell Miller, obviously. ;)

30. Okay, that would actually almost be worth wasting your vote for...
Assuming you don't live in a swing state.

3. Personally, I can think of a helluva lot of Democrats worse than McCain.
I may disagree with McCain a lot on any number of issues, but in my mind, he's got integrity and an independent spirit.

9. Well, they picked Lieberman last time.
And between Lieberman and McCain, I think I'd choose McCain.

13. Same here
Even though I find many-hell, almost all-of his positions offensive, McCain would, on a pragmatic level, help us with outreach to certain groups of voters. There are prominent Dems who would be more acceptable on the issues, but who couldn't broaden Kerry's appeal at all. This poll is a little too vague.

14. Actually, the poll is very specific.
I wanted a clear division of opinion on this issue alone.

18. Lieberman has a better voting record than McCain. On everything
But some need to be dominated by big hairy GOP-ers with moments of kindness. :puke:

17. The poll said "ham sandwich"
So you have to look at all of them. And there's alot of them that I wouldn't want on the ticket for a variety of reasons.

16. Well, I guess that explains McCain-Feingold too.
It also explains how he consistantly has been a hawk on govt waste for the last 20 years.

Republicans hate him because he doesn't toe the party line. That proves his independence much better than some unlinked reference to an unknown bill and what McCain probably said.

for BEATING Bush (according to recent polls).

The problem with the question is that you can assume nothing about the ham sandwich. It COULD be worse than McCain in this do little position.

If Kerry, for example, were to pick Gephardt it could be a fatal mistake and we could lose --- so I would, in general, probably prefer McCain to Gephardt (even though I like Gephardt better on policy)

I do not believe this is in the real realm of possibility, though - stranger things have happened.

And if McCain assumed the reins of power we KNOW we would not have a Bush ally in the white house (whether or not he is a repug). He is a decent man and he is wrong about tons of stuff. but winning is the most important thing and defeating Bush is too.

My preference for VP is actually Edwards or Clinton - though I lean towards Edwards because I think Hillary is still a bit of a cipher to me. Edwards is pretty straight up and I do NOT trust Clark who comes out of tha arkansas Mafia that backed both Bush AND Clinton).

Edited on Fri May-28-04 12:07 PM by Padraig18
A medicinal leech may cure what's ailing you, like a bad bruise, but then you have the problem of being stuck with the leech. How are ya gonna get rid of it, once it's attached?

19. And just who devises them polls? A suggestion:

GOP pollster Luntz revealed Limbaugh's role in new survey
http://mediamatters.org/items/200405250004

Republican pollster Frank Luntz, CEO and president of Luntz Research Companies, appeared as a guest on the May 21 FOX News Channel's Hannity & Colmes to present the results of his new poll that purportedly showed that a plurality of Democrats say if they had the choice they would prefer Senator Hillary Clinton over Senator John Kerry as their presidential nominee. Luntz admitted radio host Rush Limbaugh had a role in instigating the survey:

20. I may get slammed for this . . . .
But I just think that (on a personal level) McCain is the man . . . . JFK-McCain, I'd probably give them as much as I can, at least $1k in donations. KFK-Ham Sandwich just gets my vote . . . . .

There are lots of legitimate arguments whiy the McCain VP could be a bad idea . . . . but I just love the ballsiness of it- Would definitely put to rest all of the "Kerry is just another ____________ " candidate . . .. Has anything like taking a vp from another party even ever been done?

anyway, just my 2 cents

21. Ham Sandwich
with mustard please! McCain isn't going to be our ticket as VP....that would be a betrayal of the majority of Democrats. WHY, why, why do you think we lost the 2002 mid-term election? Because we were too NICE. We played the repub game and it came back to bite us in the ass! Enough of this bonding with repub bullshit! No, I will not vote for a Kerry/McCain ticket. However, I would vote for Kerry/Ham Sandwich. ;)

I was assuming that both Miller and Lieberman were off the table, so to speak. I would prefer a Democrat and I don't think it will be McCain. That said, if it was McCain, I wouldn't have a hissy fit. I'd worry about Kerry's safety a lot, but I'd vote for the ticket.

27. McCain and Zell Miller have one thing in common
Edited on Fri May-28-04 11:11 PM by union_maid
They've both endorsed Bush. I think Miller was a lot more sincere about it, but McCain also said he was supporting Bush for president. That could really be a problem if he was on a ticket with Kerry, couldn't it?

28. Isnt McCain head of the Bush campaign in Arizona?
Why oh why another thread about McCain for VP?

He's a REPUBLICAN. There are LOTS and LOTS of Democrats for Kerry to choose from.

And the way Dumbya is in freefall in the polls, perhaps by November it wont matter if Kerry has a yellow dog for a running mate. :D
