I finally understand why many of Hillary's naysayers bash her relentlessly 24/7
It's because they can't think of anything good to say about Obama.

Barack is a helluva nice guy, but he hasn't really done anything other than make some fancy speeches and say warm and fuzzy things. Thus, many of his supporters feel the need to spend all their spare time trying to tear Hillary down in any way they can, even spinning and making stuff up. By tearing Hillary down, they think that it will build up Barack. It might for a while, psychologically, but in the long term that stuff always ends up backfiring.

OTOH, the Goddess of Peace has been through the trenches fighting all her life for the good of the common people and kicking Republican ass whenever necessary. She's got a list of accomplishments 2 1/2 miles long. She's accumulated a vast wealth of valuable experience, both domestic and foreign, which will enable her administration to turn this country around and set it on its proper course.

Senator Clinton will win for one simple reason. The real deciders will ultimately look past the popularity contest and determine that Hillary Rodham Clinton is by far the most competent candidate out there. Her superior competence is what will put peoples' minds at ease, and it will get her nominated and then elected.

Remember this...Hillary never stops working for us. The minute she gets sworn in next January, she will get to work IMMEDIATELY to restore the dignity and honor to the United States that the Bush administration has taken away. :smoke:

61. chew on this
Senator Obama's fight for universal children's health care in Illinois.

Illinois requiring police interrogations and confessions to be videotaped.

His leadership on ethics reform in Washington (the bill that lobbyists and special interests are complaining about right now has his name on it).

His bill to make the federal budget far more transparent and accessible to Americans via the Internet -- we could use that openness in Texas.

And his vital work to lock down nuclear weapons around the world.

117. Hillary Clinton is bashing herself.
Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 07:04 PM by jjr5
That's why people are complaining. Obama hasn't really done anything as "remarkable" as Hillary and her campaign have done in the past month or two. From her campaign forgetting to pay for the health insurance of her workers, to the infamous Bosnia "Sniper" story, to the blasphemous remark claiming she and McCain had more experience than Obama, a fellow democrat, one can see that she is plainly hurting herself. It's sad and remarkable to watch -really. I didn't think Hillary Clinton had it in her. As a young woman, she was one of the women that I admired, but I suspected her when she suddenly ran for Senator of NY, knowing that she must have been trying to secure a bright political future for herself. I wish I could say that her campaign was doing its job, but it isn't - it's currently shooting itself in the foot.

As for Barack Obama, I don't necessarily support him because he can give "a pretty speech." By the way, why has that become a negative thing in presidential candidate - talk about spin.

From the beginning, he has presented the most comprehensive policies on getting out of the Iraq War -safely (promising to "get out in 60 days" no matter what is not a safe policy and shows how during this campaign Hillary is focusing more on her own image than on actually developing policies that help the people)-, a comprehensive health care plan that would be easier to transition to from our old health care mess, job creation, and much more. It was only after Obama presented his comprehensive ideas at debates that Clinton and Edwards started actually presenting any plans. Obama isn't perfect -duh, but of the choices we've had in this presidential race so far, he has been a good candidate, and against Clinton (who has messed up so many times within her own campaign already and doesn't have good policies) and McCain (nuf' said), choosing him is a FAR better decision.

9. Did you seriously call her the Goddess of Peace?
Is that what you guys are calling her now?

Wow.

That's...weird. Especially considering.

But anyway, I don't tear her down 24/7, so I can't really answer to that. I have a job and a family and a life, so I wouldn't have the time or energy to do that.

But I am someone who went from liking, admiring and respecting her several months ago to someone who just feels very sad when I think about her now. Everything I've seen in her campaign has saddened and disappointed me. And in some cases (the sniper fire) disturbed me.

I cannot in good conscious support someone who makes things up out of whole cloth and says them repeatedly as truth. That points, I feel, to a basic character flaw. We've found out that flaw in other office holders, usually after the election, but in this case, I found out before, and I'm thankful really. It's still incredibly sad.

I just hope after all the dust settles that she can find a way to gain respectability again.

14. Hillary doesn't have to work to "gain respectability again"
She already has all the respect in the world. The only respect she doesn't have is respect she doesn't need.

19. She doesn't need my respect?
Well, I guess that's good. I suppose she doesn't need my husband's respect or anyone else I know who has been alarmed at her conduct in this campaign.

But what if (huge what if) she IS the nominee? Then will she need my respect? And the respect of all the other voters?

126. She assumes you will play "doormat" for her if she is the nominee...
and I don't think the DNC has really yet acknowledged even to themselves the implications of havign so many Democratic Party voters who "don't respect" her, at the very least, and "hate her" more often.

They are assuming we will all line up like good robots and vote for whatever they shove on the Democratic Party candidate slot.

At least for me, they can assume again, because I will never vote for her. Ever. Satan could be her opponent, and I would still vote against her. Why? Because, if there is going to be evil done, I'd rather it be done by somebody other than a Democratic Party candidate.

154. My husband's plan is to stay home if she is the nom.
Fortunately I don't think he's going to have to do that. He can't bring himself to vote for a republican (neither can I, I never have), but he won't and can't vote for her. So he'll stay home. I still haven't decided, mostly because I don't think it'll come to that, anyway.

You mean she doesn't need the respect of all of those voters who are about to make Obama the next President? Sure, she doesn't need that. She just lusts after it so badly that she's willingly to say or so almost anything to get it.

50. I was not happy about sniper fire, but to give her the benefit of
doubt it could have occurred in one of other trips to Iraq. Maybe, maybe not, but I'd feel much safer having Hillary in charge than BO. She knows what she's doing and can go into detail about any issue you ask about. She's quite bright. BO isn't dumb by any means but he doesn't begin to have the experience which leads to knowledge that she has. The fact that really bothers me is the anti America, and anti-whitie, stuff that BO listened to for 20 yrs. Actually longer than that because his mother was anti-America. Oprah left Wright's church, I wonder if it was because she thought it was over the top or because she didn't want bad publicity if it got out she was going there. There's a list floating around showing all of his votes and he has made a lot of poor choices not just 2 or 3, lots. So with the anti-America, anti-whitie, poor judgment, the lies he's told about the Clintons. There's just a lot of stuff coming out that, even if he squeaks into the nomination people will be more aware of what he's done. His association with Rezo, the fact that during his time in IL his district never improved a bit. By Nov it will all be common knowledge. I don't see how any American could possibly vote for him and give him any power, he and his wife don't even like the US. Read her thesis about race. She and BO have introduced their daughters to the racist talk of their pastor. He was like an uncle to BO. Nope, that man should not be given any power over this country.

64. It was to Bosnia, not Iraq.
I don't buy the experience angle, for two reasons:

1. Clinton is exaggerating her experience. She's been in the operating room, but she's not a surgeon. She thinks having been in the operating room qualifies her to be the surgeon. It certainly doesn't. She claims she has 35 years of experience in public service/office. But 35 years ago, she was in law school. That's quite a stretch. I don't get it when people try to pad their resumes. At least Obama is honest about what he's done.

2. Have you noticed the bag of hammers we've had in the Oval Office for the past eight years? You know what HIS experience was? Nada. Being governor of Texas doesn't qualify you to run a sno-cone stand. It's mostly a figurehead thing. And we somehow survived HIM (barely--blooded, beaten, and broken, but barely). Obama is light years better, has more REAL experience than Bush ever had, and you're worried about Obama? Mmmmkay. He'll be fine, he'll do great. Wasn't Kennedy pretty young? Didn't Bill Clinton just serve as governor of Arkansas before becoming president? Yeah, I think Obama will be just fine, LOL.

100. a challenge
Every time some wants to revisit the pastorgate nonsense, I'll offer them the same challenge. Please explain, very explicitly, how Rev.Wright claimed that African Americans were superior in any way to caucasian Americans? He never said that. He did say, however, that many white Americans think themselves superior to black Americans. Is there something about that that isn't true?

As for "anti-American", it's completely empty rhetoric. I'm quite positive that Obama is embarrassed by many of the horrible gaffs committed by our government in the name of America. If you having been paying attention to that, or to the last 8 years, then it's hard to even have a conversation with you. Are you not embarrassed of America for some of the dreadful things we've done over the last decade? His wife put it best, that it's been a long time since she's felt proud of her country. All in all, I'd have to agree. Obama is making a lot of excited about politics and about our country's future for the first time in a long time.

112. Well, if Oprah did it....
The fact that really bothers me is the anti America, and anti-whitie, stuff that BO listened to for 20 yrs. Actually longer than that because his mother was anti-America.

Oooooo....ooooo....scary Black Man!!!! Run away! Run away! What if he likes Hip Hop!!!!

Oprah left Wright's church, I wonder if it was because she thought it was over the top or because she didn't want bad publicity if it got out she was going there.

Why anyone would care why Oprah did anything is beyond me. Why anyone care about what some preacher said is also beyond me.

Is this really the way you make decisions?

62. sorry but
- Obama passed legislation with Republican Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps. The tax credit covers 30 percent of the costs of switching one or more traditional petroleum pumps to E85, which is an 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline blend.

- After a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases.

- His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent.

- Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax relief over three years.

- Obama joined forces with former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL) to pass the toughest campaign finance law in Illinois history. The legislation banned the personal use of campaign money by Illinois legislators and banned gifts from lobbyists. Before the law was passed, one organization ranked Illinois worst among 50 states for its campaign finance regulations.

- As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan.

- He traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world.

- Obama has been a leading advocate for protecting the right to vote, helping to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and leading the opposition against discriminatory barriers to voting.

- In the U.S. Senate, Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current subprime crisis began.

- Obama sponsored legislation to combat predatory payday loans, and he also was credited with lobbied the state to more closely regulate some of the most egregious predatory lending practices.

- Barack Obama introduced the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 to provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military.

- Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services.

- Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts.

- Obama and Senator Feingold (D-WI) took on both parties and proposed ethics legislation that was described as the "gold standard" for reform. It was because of their leadership that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips became part of the final ethics bill that was signed into law.

36. But the OP says that Obama is just winning a "popularity contest," and that is,
Edited on Wed Apr-02-08 09:49 PM by tblue37
apparently, irrelevant to getting nominated and then elected, since "The real deciders will ultimately look past the popularity contest." In other words, elections don't count, just "the real deciders." Like the Supreme Court in 2000, I guess.

I can't imagine how else one could fairly win a political race, though, if not by winning that particular "popularity contest." Perhaps the sky will open up and a great light will come down, and celestial choirs will sing, and "the real deciders" will wave a magic wand to make Hillary president.

Can't imagine how else it might happen.

It's just that it's Obama's job to sell himself, and he has done it nearly flawlessly.

And if Hillary were running a clean campaign, I personally would have no reason to attack her. Simply staying in the race and running honorably would have been all right with me. But she is not running honorably, and thus this triggers great anger.

The minute she entered the oval office she would forget all about you and the rest of the poor foot soldiers out there working their asses off for her. The Clintons don't give a shit about common folk - they only care about power and in their world power comes from wealth. So if you don't have loads of cash falling out of your pockets into theirs you don't count. You never did - you never will.

Luckily though, we'll never know for sure... ain't gonna happen.

65. It's the only way Barack ever had a chance of winning; tearing Hillary apart.
It's been his tactic since the beginning.

I've NEVER believed his words of Hope and Unity, how could I when he assassinates the character of a fellow Democrat as he has? I know campaigning isn't a picnic but for him to win, running against Hillary, he knew that he'd have to totally ruin her in the eyes of the public and he has tried every tactic to do JUST that.

Polling says his greatest weakness is experience! So what did he do? Attack Hillary's experience. By the book dirty low ball campaigning, but he took it a step further with the race aspect...

I truly believe Hillary will overcome his deplorable tactics and she will indeed take back the White House for us.

Madam President - ahhh! I just LOVE the sound of that!

76. Only experience Hillary has is in being in the Senate
Barack never attacks Hillary, it is why he is winning. She looks stupid attacking and making fun of him all the time while he continues to win against her.

I understand why she is still in the race after raising all that money from corporate backers who thought they were buying the presidency. I see why she feels she owes it to these interests to get their money's worth. I believe when people pay for a service they should get it, and she is giving them her best.

I just have to thank all the Obama primary voters who said NO to the Clinton dynasty, NO to mandated for profit health insurance, no to endless war and profit for the military industrial complex and decided it was time for a new direction. I will get my say come April 22nd, here in PA.

71. Hillary supporters (well some of them) have been bashing other Dems for 3 years now.
Posters like you have been the most negative posters on this board. I remember the anti-Kerry days. Now it's Obama. It doesn't really matter which Dem you are bashing -- the point is they stand in the way of She, the Inevitable. Meanwhile, I have been writing positive posts about lots of Dems throughout the entire time on Kerry, Webb, Obama, Mark Warner, and so on. But this board always feeds on the negativity just like I am doing for you right now. Your post has the truth exactly backwards.

72. lmao this coming from one of the most insulting people ever on DU....you.
You're the last one who should EVER talk about anyone being negative. Compared to you, I'm 1001 times more positive about Democrats than you could ever dream of being.

You're just holding a silly grudge because you were always the first one to throw hissy fits whenever I criticized Kerry's campaign. Lets face it, beachmom, the ONLY reason you even make believe you're supporting Obama is because all you care about is spreading the seeds of hatred about Hillary and Bill Clinton.

Tough diddly squat for you if you don't like it that some people don't think the world of how Kerry ran his pathetic campaign.

Hope that helps....

94. Hillary is lying again!!
I am not happy with any of our choices especially Hlllary. I like Barack, he seems like a genuinely nice guy and I believe he really does have the best interest of the country in his heart but he is a little unrealistic. Hillary is an absolute idiot or a genius depending on how you look at it. She is banking on the Presidency by playing to the ignorance of a large majority of the democratic party who are lacking in education or live in the immigrant subculture. She has lied about the sniper fire and if I want to scream every time I hear her talk about mortgages. She wants to do away with pre-payment penalties on mortgages. Ok class, can anyone tell me about pre-payment penalties and the pro/cons of them? Pre-payment penalties are actually put in place to allow lenders to offer lower interest rates to people who have less than perfect credit. By eliminating them it will actually increase the lowest available rates. They are only for a short period usually for no more than 3 years. The reason for this is to deter the borrower from refinancing before the lender can recoup the $ lost by giving the borrower a better interest rate. She is actually screwing you!! Yes, pre-payment penalties suck if you get in a jam and need to sell your house immediately after buying it. If you don't plan on going anywhere than it works to your advantage because you are going to get a lower interest rate than you would have been eligible. WAKE UP!!!

So words like inspiring, intelligent, thoughtful and innovator don't count

But of course, they're just words

OTOH the Go.... the G .... sorry I can't do that and keep a straight face, lets use Hillarity.

OTOH Hillarity has a lifetime of fail, failed her bar exam, failed with her health plan, failed because she wanted NAFTA, failed at managing a campaign, failed to help in Bosnia, failed to help in Northern Ireland, failed to forsee that if you authorise the use of force - force might be used, failed to control Bill and now she is failing to keep her lead in PA.

Senator Hillarity will fail again with this campaign because she lies, cannot handle her budget and generally acts like the world owes her a living. Oh and don't expect the lies to stop if the US is unfortunate enough to have her take an oath of office.

Thank goodness that the Democratic Party has Obama who will take that oath instead and do a damn sight better job of fulfilling it.

She's a failure; a fighter, true, but a failure none the less. Did she need to define herself as President Clinton's wife or was that convenience because it furthered the cause of Hillarity? She could have carved out her own career in politics as many other women did but instead was demoted to the role of "loyal but betrayed spouse" by the infidelities of her husband.

Her original Healthcare legislation was a disaster for the USA, not because of the ideas it was based on were not right, but because the failure of the initiative and set the cause of universal healthcare back by 14 years. The failure of that plan was down to Hillarity and her inability to formulate legislation that could attract the support of the legislature despite the opposition of the industry. She failed and you cannot spin it any other way.

HRC has run a Rove campaign. She has insulted Obama supporters repeatedly.

THAT is why people endorse the "I hate Hillary" message.

And it is disingeuous of you to claim otherwise.

Hillary Clinton sowed the seeds of hate with ever insult she fired at us. Now she must reap what she has sown.

And if the DNC doesn't recognize and deal with this before August, we may end up with our metaphorical dicks in our hands in November, because I believe there are many Obama supporters who will not lay down and play "doormat" for Hillary Clinton. Not after this campaign, and not ever again.

The "Goddess Of Peace" lost my vote when she 1. Played the fear card with her 3am ad. and 2. Cast a Republican in a more favorable light than her Democratic opponent. She may have more "experience" but her experience has caused her to make some really bad campaign decisions, and she obviously knows it judging from some of her more recent unity statements. Her supporters may never figure it out, but she did.
