Gore is not gonna step in and be the nominee
Edited on Tue Apr-01-08 04:02 PM by Texas Hill Country
The talk is stupid, far fetched and ridiculous.

First, how would that even work?

Second, who would be VP and would the other find that acceptable?

Third, and most importantly, WHY WOULD HE EVEN WANT THE JOB? He has more power on the issue he cares about, less stress and more fun doing what he does now. HE DOESNT WANT THE JOB.

8. I think 'he doesn't care' is a little off the mark.

Gore has been very clear he doesn't want the job.

Oh...in case you weren't around, he WAS elected once. I think he could be again.

It wouldn't be fair at this point
Two candidates have been in a heavyweight fight and then Gore strolls in in the 11th hour. It's not going to happen.

7. Didn't we fight enough about this yesterday?
I'm for Gore if there's a deadlock, but if there is a god (please, convince me) her funding will dry up and this will all be over soon.

9. Okay, how it would "work" is simple to understand, but it requires a specific chain of events
And this chain of events would not necessarily give us Gore as the nominee.

But this is what it would take - - and this is all perfectly legal, it's all part of the party rules already:

1.) Neither Clinton nor Obama arrive at the convention with the 2025 delegates needed to win the nomination on the first ballot. This part will probably happen.

2.) After the first ballot at the convention, neither Obama nor Clinton are able to persuade 2025 of the delegates at the convention to vote for them on later ballots. This could happen, but is unlikely.

3.) This deadlock remains for a number of subsequent ballots. Neither Clinton nor Obama are willing to end their candidacy in exchange for the #2 slot on a unity ticket. Again, possible but unlikely.

4.) This deadlock remains for a number of subsequent ballots. Neither Obama nor Clinton are willing to end their candidacy unconditionally for the good of the party and the country. Again, possible but unlikely.

5.) Since the convention is totally deadlocked, the delegates start looking for a compromise candidate. Anybody can put anybody's name forward as a possible compromise candidate. There can be as many compromise candidates on the ballot as people want to nominate. But at the end of the day, a compromise candidate has to get the same 2025 votes to become the nominee.

So, it could happen that we end up with Gore, or Edwards or somebody else as the nominee. But it would take that very specific chain of events, and it would take a failure on the part of both Obama and Clinton to convince 2025 dedicated party activists stuck in Denver to vote for them - - and it would require both Clinton and Obama to be equally pig headed and equally unwilling to put the good of the nation before their own careers.

12. For those of us who gag at the thought that we'll have to vote for Clinton or Obama in November
Edited on Tue Apr-01-08 04:28 PM by dflprincess
let us at least enjoy this hope (we know it's farfetched) of a deadlocked convention and a save by Gore for as long as we can.

I'm voting for the nominee, but it certainly has turned into a depressing election.
