Obama pastor building home in Odyssey

March 28, 2008
From staff reports

A $1 million home is being built in Tinley Park for the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., the controversial pastor to Barack Obama.

Plans filed with the village show a 10,340-square-foot, four-bedroom home under construction in the Odyssey subdivision is for the Trinity United Church of Christ minister. The church is paying for the home.

Wright made news this month when video surfaced showing him using racial slurs while blasting Obama's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Clinton. Wright also blamed global terrorism on American foreign policy, saying this country's "chickens had come home to roost."

You'd think Wright was running for president! I am so sick of the media reporting on everything he says and does...he's not running!

148. It is a story, because what he is doing is entirely "un-Christlike"
like just another Elmer Gantry figure.

If you talk the talk, then walk the walk, or stop your phony bullshit.

If you preach for cash and materialistic gain, like Sinclair Lewis's "Elmer Gantry", then you better be ready to take some heat for it.

I personally know several billionaires who worked their way up from bean-counter positions, or put themselves through tough schools like Stanford by working at Baskin Robbins... you better believe they aren't about to forget what it's like to be poor.

Not all poor people deserve our pity, and not all rich people deserve the hating I'm seeing here.

42. That church is not just for poor people
I'm sure you didn't mean to imply such a thing.

There are 8,000 people that attend the church and they represent a cross section of economic groups.

There are many preachers, of all races, that have houses that cost a million dollars and much more. Remember that the church usually provides housing for their ministers ~ you can save a lot of money that way.

Whatever, I could care less that a minister has a million dollar house.

Jerry Farwell, Tammy Baker and all the rest made millions!

And there are many African Americans that have million dollar plus houses.

By the way, Rev. Wright is not running for President, Sen. Obama is~
Just as the leaders of The Fellowship are not running for President, Sen. Clinton is.

Huum, where are those tax returns from Hillary Clinton? Since they must be super clean, we should have seen them long ago. Now SHE is running for President and it is almost APRIL 2008.

14. White folks' greed runs a world in need.

Wright grew up in comfort and will retire in same, his disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness" notwithstanding.

Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer Jordan in 1981. We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:

17. Hey look, the rest of the text:
Disavowal of the Pursuit of “Middleclassness.” Classic methodology on control of captives teaches that captors must be able to identify the “talented tenth” of those subjugated, especially those who show promise of providing the kind of leadership that might threaten the captor’s control.

Those so identified are separated from the rest of the people by:

1. Killing them off directly, and/or fostering a social system that encourages them to kill off one another.
2. Placing them in concentration camps, and/or structuring an economic environment that induces captive youth to fill the jails and prisons.
3. Seducing them into a socioeconomic class system which, while training them to earn more dollars, hypnotizes them into believing they are better than others and teaches them to think in terms of “we” and “they” instead of “us.”
4. So, while it is permissible to chase “middleclassness” with all our might, we must avoid the third separation method – the psychological entrapment of Black “middleclassness.” If we avoid this snare, we will also diminish our “voluntary” contributions to methods A and B. And more importantly, Black people no longer will be deprived of their birthright: the leadership, resourcefulness and example of their own talented persons.

46. A.) if you're going to call someone "truely ignorant", you should spell truly right.
B.) I wouldn't sit through 30 seconds of any sermon let alone a Jeremiah Wright sermon. Fact of the matter is, I heard enough in those "30 seconds" to know what he's preaching and who he's preaching to.

Wright's two-story house will have finished basement, along with two decks, a circular driveway, room for a future swimming pool or theater, a four-car garage, elevator, family room with bar, master bathroom with whirlpool and custom shower and master bedroom with fireplace and under-counter fridge.

If the church bought him a cheaper house you'd accuse them of not caring about their elderly pastor.

I think the old man deserves to have a nice house after 30 years of service to Trinity.

Also, this article is missing some details like does he live in a house owned by the church now, what is the yearly pastor's salary, how much does the church get in the plate every weekend, what's the new pastor's situation, what are typical housing prices in the area ('cause here you can get a cute postwar 3 bedroom for a mil), the list goes on.

Some Commander-in-Chief.

She takes responsibility for nothing.

Not for the 500,000 Iraqi children that died because of the Clinton's Iraqi sanctions.

Not for the 4,000 killed and 40,000 wounded American soldiers that she handed to Bush on a plate when he asked for them.

Not for the 1 million Iraqis killed during the current conflict.

Not for the Cluster-Bombs she REFUSED to sign a ban on.

But she has the nerve to lie about going into a dangerous area for the purposes of political SELF-AGGRANDIZEMENT!

How disgusting can you get."

This new home is just now being built, and is in a gated community, you know, to keep the riffraff out. Doesn't seem as if he practices what he preaches. Over 10,000 square feet in a gated community in Chicago does not go for l,000,000, The article said that 1,400,000 was the beginning of construction loan, with a 10,000,000 dollar line of credit.

All of this according to an article I read, so, don't accept it as "gospel".

an exorbitant house. Give the man his due and let him retire in peace. He's built up the largest church in Chicago and is considered a national leader in theology. I'm sure he makes a nice sum of money with speaking engagements and the like and the numerous leadership positions he's had over the years.

I don't hear any of his former congregation complaining about his house, so what business is it of ours.

I agree the poster who responded to your original post doesn't understand the real estate market. I live if Stafford, about 40 miles from DC VA there are houses worth 300,000 or more in freaking Stafford county! As you know to get a house in a DC metro area where you live is twice as much or more. You know better than I do, housing costs are insane in the DC metro area; you don't get much for your money. Housing in any large metro area is bound to be expensive.

Even you can't be that deluded. Oh, wait. It's YOU.

Certain HRC supports are just really (and understandably) angry that this "scandal" didn't sink Obama as they predicted. I feel for you, I really do. But that's no reason to become unreasonable.

I wonder what the taxes and upkeep are for the house, does the church pay that as well? Is this something the church gives to all the ministers when they retire? I wonder if this part of benefit plan ... oh forget it, I don't care. I'm so over Rev. Wright.

Hillary's Nasty Pastorate

There's a reason Hillary Clinton has remained relatively silent during the flap over intemperate remarks by Barack Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright. When it comes to unsavory religious affiliations, she's a lot more vulnerable than Obama.

snip

Furthermore, The Family takes credit for some of Clinton's rightward legislative tendencies, including her support for a law guaranteeing "religious freedom" in the workplace, such as for pharmacists who refuse to fill birth control prescriptions and police officers who refuse to guard abortion clinics.

snip

Sharlet generously attributes Clinton's involvement to the under-appreciated depth of her religiosity, but he himself struggles to define The Family's theological underpinnings. The Family avoids the word Christian but worships Jesus, though not the Jesus who promised the earth to the "meek." They believe that, in mass societies, it's only the elites who matter, the political leaders who can build God's "dominion" on earth. Insofar as The Family has a consistent philosophy, it's all about power--cultivating it, building it and networking it together into ever-stronger units, or "cells." "We work with power where we can," Doug Coe has said, and "build new power where we can't."

160. This is the problem that I have with most organized religion..
It seems a lot of the money made by organizations with tax-free status ultimately goes to fund somewhat lavish lifestyles for the leaders. As far as I'm concerned, they should be treated like the rest of us - whatever goes to charity should be tax deductable. The rest of it should be taxed.

I don't care where you live - the ability to purchase a million dollar home seems wealthy to me and I find it very hypocritical to be preaching against rich white folks when you're aren't doing too bad yourself.

That doesn't affect my opinion of Obama except that he seems to fall in the same trap that a lot of people I don't respect fall into, including Hillary I'm sure - attending and participating in religious organizations that really care mostly about number one - themselves.

for considerably less - if the 10k feet part of it is true. Hell, 3k would be quite comfortable. Obviously, if the story is true, you can get a lot of home for a million where he's building. He's not buying a condo - he's building a 10k square foot home.

Plans filed with the village show a 10,340-square-foot, four-bedroom home under construction in the Odyssey subdivision is for the Trinity United Church of Christ minister. The church is paying for the home.

Wright's two-story house will have finished basement, along with two decks, a circular driveway, room for a future swimming pool or theater, a four-car garage, elevator, family room with bar, master bathroom with whirlpool and custom shower and master bedroom with fireplace and under-counter fridge

Edited on Sat Mar-29-08 10:37 AM by OurVotesCount-Ohio
I could be wrong, but I'm betting it's like many other churches that own the actual property and let their current and/or retired ministers live there either rent free or for minimal rent.

The smallest church in our town owns a home and does that for their minister. The largest owns two homes and does the same thing.

edited to add: our town=population a little over 1,000.

202. I don't suppose his congregation, who actually paid for this home
is too put out about it. Kind of makes you wonder what someone who has absolutely nothing to do with the good Reverend or his church would have their noses so out of joint over this... BTW my little household of three is renting a "low income" house in a neighborhood where you can't hardly toss a brick anywhere without it going through the window of a 1.5 million dollar property... and you're not going to break the window on an actual mansion assessed at less than 4 million here - and many of those houses are owned or rented by ordinary, middle-class families, too. Sounds like property prices in Jeremiah's neighborhood have also climbed through the roof (no pun intended).

Still... What, exactly, is the beef here? And what, pray tell, does it have to do with the Democratic primary?
