Rev Wright bashes Italians and Obama defends it
Obama brought this crap into this campaign, not Clinton, not the media and not republicans, this is on OBAMA.

And as an Italian I can say right now there is no fucking way I will ever support Obama, ever, for him to 'they only found five or six offensive statements' just goes to show Obama thinks this hate talk is ok.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23835328/

<snip>

Wright's latest controversy comes from a eulogy he wrote for Asa Hilliard. The article appeared in a November/December 2007 edition of Trumpet, a magazine run by Wright's daughters. He was quoted as calling Italians "garlic noses" and saying Jesus' crucifixion was "a public lynching Italian-style."

<snip>

But on Wednesday, Obama, speaking to a crowd of supporters, appeared to defend Wright.

"This was somebody who was preaching three sermons a week for 30 years and so it got boiled down -- they found five or six of his most offense statements," Obama said.

69. Ferraro has not
made defamatory or derogatory statements or uses ethnic or racist slurs.

Wright is not running for president. Nor is Ferraro. I don't understand why on earth Wright used such language and I certainly would not like to be associated with anyone who did (unless they were taken wildly out of context) - even five or six times in a sermon or publication. Completely unacceptable to me. But I am not running for president either.

79. Thanks, Cali. Sometimes I wonder whatever happened to party loyalty.
Our party is so far superior to the Republicans (even with all of our flaws), it is simply crazy to be so shortsighted.

I am hoping that once we have a candidate and the GE campaign is on many Dems will "come home." The lines between McCain and the Dem will be so strong that I think the majority of Dems will reject the "3rd Bush term" of John McCain. The campaign will intensify those lines of difference.

At least, that is my fondest hope at this point...

84. His initial public comments on the matter
were framed around the circumstance of Wright leaving the church, IIRC. Close as I can remember it now, he said he wouldn't leave the church in light of the fact that Wright had retired.

I'll try to find the direct quote - but if that was the gist of his first comments on the matter, then he would have been consistent from the get-go, no?

55. "Did Obama do drugs with Rev. Wright?"
This is who you choose to defend Maddy?

"Obama has known Wright for about 20 years and this was about the same period that Obama claims he was snorting lines of coke. The strange thing is there is not one person who ever claims to have done drugs with the young Obama, and cocaine being the social drug that it is one has to wonder exactly who Obama was tooting lines with.

I can only surmise it was Reverend Wright, and it completely explains why Obama got him out of the country so quick when Wrightgate broke and also why he would throw his granny under the bus and not Wright, obviously the great Reverend has a secret."

25. What Was Your Intention For This OP?
To enhance your candidate's favorability by pointing out their qualifications?

See, that's the thing, the only possible road map your candidate has to the nomination is at the expense of the democrat with the most votes, that has won the most states and has earned the most delegates in this primary season. Your attempt to denigrate him rather than support your candidate with their postive attributes makes you appear petty and trite.

Using the term 'garlic noses' is as insulting as saying something derogative about black noses. If someone close to Hillary made comments about black peoples noses you people would be up in arms and I would be right there with you.

Obama refuses to denounce him and instead makes him a victim. I thought only neocons defended racists, Obama followers have proved that is not the case.

in college and I never heard the term "Garlic Nose." I heard her and her brothers call each other every name in the book, but never that.......Is that a real insult?

And, but the way, Crucifixion WAS the execution method du jour in them days, both state sanctioned execution, and extracurricular, horrific murders (lynchings).

IIRC, the murder of Jesus was little more than a lynching.

So I don't know what the deal here is. If I am being stupid enlighten me.

as "The Sopranos" hurt HBO.

Although, crucifixion really was a public hanging, Roman style. I don't think that people on the Italian penisula became known as "Italians" until long after the Romans Empire was done.

I don't know what to make of the "garlic noses" thing. There is no context in the article, and given the MSM's tendency to be really, really selective about how they quote him, I'd really appreciate some. But it sounds super-corny.

Everyone knows that the "Obama is a racist because Wright is a racist therefore I am outraged" tactic has worn so old that it is now laughable. Anyone who buys that kind of illogical thinking was never going to vote for Obama anyway. The polls pretty much confirm this. So please spare us your "outrage" over Wrights alleged comments about Italians (actually the comments were related to the ancient Romans and the crucifixion of Jesus).

I can only wonder whether you were "outraged" by Wright's other comments or merely the ones about Romans. If you have such a problem with Wright's "racism" why are you just now posting about your outrage? Apparently the other statements didn't bother you too much.

Absurd. Absolutely Absurd.

60. Put on your compassion hat!
Think about Pastor Wright and give him a break!

Go to the church YouTube channel and see if you can't change your mind. I love changing my mind.

I bet you can find something you like about this church!

62. no, this is clintons crap
Edited on Fri Mar-28-08 05:03 AM by bowens43
this the kind of person she is. she couldn't win on the issues now she and her supporters launch mindless , irrelevent attacks.

it's pathetic, there is no difference between a hillary supporter and a bush supporter , there is no difference , ethically or morally, between clinton and bush.

My 77 year old mom is 100% Italian and 100% for Obama. Everyone else in my family is for Obama as well, except for my asshole brother-law who is a Republican douche bag for McCain.

75. I do find that odd and disturbing
Wright is clearly a interesting mix. But in that mix are some rather crude and ludicrous elements.
To have such a person as a close mentor seems significant to me. My guess is that Obama turned a blind eye to those elements.
All a bit disappointing and does give pause for thought.

He was talking about the Ancient Romans.
But don't let that stop you from spewing more hate.

83. The OP lacks basic logic skills as well...
What evidence is there that Obama had also heard those remarks and was dismissing them, as the OP claims.

78. You should actually read the eulogy.
Here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=5282479&mesg_id=5282479

Yes he uses those exact phrases. As you may already know by now, Rev Wright uses provocative language to make his points. Perhaps if you take the time to read this wonderful Eulogy, this Eulogy about how we are all children of god, this eulogy about how we are divided against each other, you might learn something. Or not.

80. It is totally unfair to take these racially prejudiced remarks out of context.
This seems to be the legal defense of Rev Wright being made by his public defender, Sen Obama.

85. Italian citizen here
100% of HRC, though I don't count since I can't vote in US elections, but I surely will support whoever is the nominee. Sure, Rev. Wright is not on the ballot and sure, Sen. Obama should not be judged by the company he keeps... or should he? But the term "garlic noses" is, in my view, slightly derogatory and calling crucifixion an "Italian style" lynching is a bit historically inaccurate, as Italy was not a unified country until the 1860s.

Perhaps, Rev. Wright has watched one too many mobster movies... I admit that many Americans are very ignorant about modern Italy and/or have a very distorted view of Italy and Italians (I include many Italian-Americans among them). Personally, I abhor the way that garlic is everywhere in Italian-American cuisine, whereas in Italian cuisine it is used sparingly, if at all (especially in northern Italy, where I'm originally from). And if you'd see me or half of my family or even most of my relatives and friends, you'd swear I were Irish or German. I am very pale skinned with blonde hair. There are blonde/blues, redheads, freckled, pale, tanned and all shades in between, none of whom fit the stereotypical Italian image of dark and hairy.

88. I'm American/Italian
Haven't you ever heard an Italian condemn blacks?
Did you tell Bush that the mafia could have done the job Bush wanted done and that was to do away with The leader of Iraq. Few bucks it would have been done. Not the lives and cost of it today.
I have to tell you a thing of the past.
Blacks were told to get to the rear of the bus, so the saying goes.
Hell man, us Italians were told to get off.
Obama is supported by this Italian and if you don't like it put our country in more suffering, don't go back to Italy it's to expensive there. More so now that our money isn't worth crap in the world.
