As a steadfast independent liberal, I've always noted there's a certain kind of 'personality' that gravitates to such glassy-eyed, mindless "followings" ... and it has never appealed to me. Moreover... I find it repulsive. The psychology seems to share something with military indoctrination ... identification of an "enemy," dehumanization of that "enemy," elevation of some "leader" to sainthood, loyalty oaths and tests, ritual attire and other accoutrements, anti-intellectualism, fear of 'excommunication,' etc.

When the notion that there's something inherently superior about "us" as compared to "them" takes hold, the ovens aren't far off. It's been done on the "left" as well as the "right."

Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part, but it seems to me there had been a concerted effort on the part of folks from both camps in the past week to be a bit more civil and to "police" their own. I know everyone has gotten totally sickened by the needless acrimony. It seemed things were calming down a bit.

Then suddenly this weekend it was rumors of secret ignore lists and special sites to "attack" from...Who benefits from crap like that? Not Clinton supporters. Not Obama supporters. Trolls, plain and simple.

The more of us who refuse to rise to the flamebait, the better off we'll all be.
