The whole philosophy behind "Let it sink" is contradictory, cliquish, and, well, stupid.
Ok...so someone posts a thread critical of Obama. Instead of offering a well-reasoned response, you scream "Let it sink!"

But by doing so, you kick the thread that you say should sink, and you make yourself look like a rube who's incapable of rational discussion of national politics.

I guess "Let it sink!" is the DU version of the junior-high "Don't talk to that girl!" slam. It's just silly.

And if that isn't enough, then someone crafts and circulates a list of Hillary supporters to be banned and ignored. Sooo middle-schoolish.

Why not just stay away from GDP if you can't stand to reply to threads and if you've got 60 supporters of your opponent on ignore?

I'm not suprised at any of these divisive methods, though, when I realize which people are leading this movement. I guess some people never emotionally grow beyond adolescence. :(

50. There have been several times I've started getting sucked into a stupid debate
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 07:30 PM by Voice for Peace
about stupid stuff till I came upon someone posting "let it sink" -- and it was a nice reminder that I don't have to go there. I still may read the thread, but I'm not going to kick it by responding.

So I respectfully disagree with your characterization of it, though maybe the original good idea is being misused.

It's just as relevant for Hillary supporters to use, if there is some trashy irrelevant posting about her, a reminder that all of us can be better than that. To let all the trash sink, on both sides.

Both sides ought to be united in that regard, or McCain's going to be the next president.

On the high road there is common ground.

This is intended as a response to the OP, I'm not sure if I've misplaced it.

83. How about waiting until they actually mention Obama though...
So far he isn't at issue, and really, if he was going to be an issue, don't you think he would have brought it out in that last press dump?

The prosecutors would have had to say something to him by now if he was going to be in trouble or asked to testify.

That hasn't happened, which is why it is out of the news.

55. I've had Lisey's Story for a year. Bought if for a trip to Williamsburg, VA...
and then never took time to read it. I think I'll pull it out and read it while I'm recuperating from surgery.

Another thing you and I have in common! Our adoration of King. :loveya:

BTW, I met him about four years ago in Vicksburg, Mississippi. I was visiting the Battlefield Park there, and it was vacant, because it was winter. So my son was playing on the cannons (it's a memorial park to the civil war battle of Vicksburg) when I look up, and there's the park manager walking through the park with this tall, limping, graying man wearing glasses. I thought to myself, that guy is someone...who is he?

As they got closer, I realized who it was! He said hi, we said hi...and then we moved on through the park. At every stop, King and the park manager arrived right behind us, so we had several conversations. I tried to pretend that I didn't realize that he was the GREAT STEPHEN KING, but couldn't resist. At the Illinois memorial, I finally confessed that I knew who he was, and extended my hand to him, told him that I had been a big fan since his career began. He shook my hand, said thanks, and that he was in Vicksburg doing research on the south for an upcoming project.

We then clapped our hands and shouted inside the memorial to hear the echo...and we moved on to the next monument.

That was my proudest brush with greatness, except when I met Dolly Parton as a five year old girl. :D

Like people have to be told to ignore something that is crap, all of a sudden?

But you see that same exhortation when the discussion is VALID--not just NEWSMAX, Drudge, et. al.

Of course, the takeoffs are great--Let it STINK, Let it SHRINK....you could have a field day with those!!!

44. I think there are definitely times when engaging someone
is just plain counter-productive.

Is the point of the OP constructive engagement? Then a well-reasoned response is logical and perhaps useful.

Is the point either flammable or ... pointless? Then no number of well-reasoned responses will matter a bit. Better not to "reward" these with responses, as the responses tend to continue incivility.

they live in their own world and when the truth hits them in the face they collapse.

62. I've never put anyone on ignore here. Kind of defeats the purpose
of coming to a DISCUSSION board.

63. Maddy I'm going to disagree
Let it sink allows threads like "Obama's secretly a Muslim" to fall like they should. It's just bait.

Just like if there's a "Hillary's a Lesbian who killed Vince Foster" should also sink. If all supporters of both candidates just didn't reply to those types of threads, then maybe we could get more decent threads about policy issues up. Or hey, even threads bashing McCain.

:)

I'm not on DU 24/7, and I wouldn't have recommended them anyways, I would have sent an alert.

I don't have control over all the posters on here. Are there asshole Obama supporters on here? Yes. Are there asshole Clinton supporters on here? Yes.

64. Certainaly not a democracy.
Ignore anyone who disagrees with you. Or, like they used to say: agree with us or leave. (Bush and his cohorts said that).

They aren't even trying to have a discussion.

74. The idea is to not kick flamebait, but ya know what? You win. From now on, I will smash and crush
all Hillary supporters on this board rather than, like I have, trying to change the conversation or be fair.

I want Hillary's cyber blood spilled all over GDP now.

is the moment they've already lost their own argument.
i'm sick of it, and it's happening far too much.
those are the only threads i'd rather see drop.
why feed into more nastiness?

85. I agree with letting threads citing Newsmax sink.
I think that the idea behind "let it sink" is that, too often, really stupid pointless flamebait-ish threads get all the attention around here while thoughtful posts are forgotten.

If we all stopped responding to the most outrageous threads, we might raise the level of discourse here. I'm talking about applying "let it sink" equally to Obama or Hillary threads.

Of course, misusing "let it sink" on threads just to avoid discussing an issue is stupid.

The poster to whom I'm responding,
Posts shit so deep that it's ponding,
But since she'd rather masturbate than talk,
She can walk, she can walk, she can walk.

i don't really get involved with the posts here but i try to hide/ignore anything entirely divisive and pointless and try to stay in threads with substance...where i still normally don't post replies...just read...and hit ignore when I have to :o
