Bush to reintroduce his Space initiative this summer
One way to get the news off Iraq is to talk about going into space and spending lots of money for campaign contributors like Raytheon, GE, Boeing... Hmmm, does Halliburton make lunar modules?

http://www.insightmag.com/news/2004/05/11/National/New-Bush.Space.Speech.Planned-680290.shtml

Snip:
""The president wants to speak about space," a senior administration source said.

The speech apparently will be timed to coincide with a report by the presidential commission appointed earlier this year to review the space plan and seek broad public comment. The commission, headed by former Pentagon executive Pete Aldridge and featuring leaders from industry, nonprofit groups and the military, is expected to release its report in July.

Sources said Bush has been briefed on the hearings held by the commission and is awaiting its report to help frame his forthcoming remarks. Despite the approaching presidential election, the speech, which will reiterate Bush's call for advanced human exploration of space, will not necessarily be made "in a political context."

16. It's a distraction technique.
"Hey everyone, look over there! We're going to space, isn't that cool?" - said as he's trying desperately to sweep the latest news from Iraq under the carpet.

The pile underneath that carpet must be several stories tall by now.

6. I Approve Of Space Exploration
Space really is the next frontier. It is simply the destiny of humanity to explore this frontier. It was a Democrat, President Kennedy, who challenged our country to make our first baby steps into the universe. Now I certainly don't think Bush has the vision of President Kennedy. The only reason that he is talking about space exploration is the lack of any domestic agenda. But I do think the space exploration is a challenge that humanity should accept.

9. NO, there is a real agenda
Edited on Tue May-11-04 06:40 PM by lapfog_1
There are two, actually.

1) According to PNAC doctrine, military dominance of space is a
prerequisite for world domination.

2) By redirecting ALL of NASAs' budget to manned missions to the
moon and beyond, we will essentially defund all other NASA missions,
of which the MTPE (Mission to Planet Earth) is the most important.
Bushco doesn't want to hear any more evidence of global climate
change... after all, they have a few purchased scientists who
dispute that it is happening, or if it is, that mankind has anything
to do about it. Most of the raw data is remote sensed by NASA
satellites... need I say more?

10. I really want to know if the Mars colonization proposal ...

came from the Moonies. I remember back in the 80's, about when the Moonies founded the Washington Times, the Moonie street canvas folk were pushing Mars colonization. Given the size of the Moonie empire, and its conservative tendencies, real connections between the Moonies and the present administration must exist -- so is this where Dubya got the hots for flying off to the red planet?

12. the above-linked article is from a Moonie rag
maybe that's what spurred your question.

But it's a pretty laughable article, with dubious info. Did Bush really say any of this:

Reportedly, Bush agreed, saying at one point, "You must do what you have to do." Later, during a briefing by NASA officials following the public outcry over the Hubble decision, Bush simply said, "Never look back," and added, "Go forth every single day and do the best job you can."

15. So where's the money to fund this going to come from?
The Iraq war was supposed to be paid for using oil... but we all see how well that worked out.

Does the moon have any natural resources we can pillage for profit?

19. space part 2
funny, the first time he mentioned space, you could hear crickets, it flopped, so it was dropped. But now with all of the pesky negative news, W is betting on a few bold headlines, but sounds pretty weak, though I suspect like the original post that selling the idea to some tech oriented contract folks doesn't hurt either...

20. Fly Bush to the Moon
Good. I'll get to hear my favorite toon again.

I think he is pushing this for two reasons; a Star Wars initiative; and for some kind of cheap energy he thinks we can get from the moon.

Is science his strong suit?
