I see they are here...
and their argument is that Obama is 'unelectable' because of Reverend Wright. I am furious, that such inflammatory tactics are being used on a "Democratic Discussion Board" to attack a race, a candidate, a Preacher's life's work, and the majority of the Democratic Party. This is worse than anything any Republican smear, or any of the antics of Fox News. Let it sink, Ignore, and Alert. Yes We Can.

Born on September 22, 1941, in Philadelphia
Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. is one of the most widely acclaimed black preachers in the United States. Combining social concern, spiritual growth, and political activism, Wright, who preaches in a black traditional style, brings a message of hope, redemption, and renewal. In 1972 he became pastor of a small United Church of Christ congregation in the inner city of Chicago. After over 30 years in the pulpit, his congregation has grown to 10,000 and is the largest United Church of Christ congregation in the United States.
In 1959 Wright enrolled at Virginia Union University, in Richmond, where he remained until 1961. That year he left school to join the military. He served in the Second Marine Division of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1961 to 1963, achieving the rank of private first class. In 1963 he graduated as valedictorian from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, and from 1964 to 1967, he served as a cardio pulmonary technician at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.
During 1965 and 1966, he was awarded with three Presidential Commendations from President Lyndon B. Johnson.

After his discharge from the military, Wright continued his education. He enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1967, and was awarded a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a master's degree in 1969. He then entered the University of Chicago Divinity School, receiving a master of arts degree in 1975. He ended his formal education in 1990 when he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree in black sacred music from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
----------------------------------------------
When Wright joined the staff of Trinity United Church of Christ as senior pastor, the inner city church boasted just 87 active members, most of whom came from the neighborhood surrounding the church. Wright embraced his new congregation took up the phrase coined by his predecessor Rev. Dr. Reuben Sheares, "Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian." Within months the church had adopted the phrase as its motto and vision. Under Wright's leadership, fueled by his passion, and motivated by his preaching, the congregation began to grow by leaps and bounds. By 2004 there were over 10,000 members, with
people coming from across the metro area. The congregation, which proudly notes its diverse socio-economic mix, dedicated a new 2,700 worship center in 1997.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Wright has authored several books, including Africans Who Shaped Our Faith, Good News! Sermons of Hope for Today's Families, and What Makes You So Strong? Sermons of Joy and Strength from Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. According to Cleophus J. LaRue in The Heart of Black Preaching, in his title sermon of What Makes You So Strong, Wright "demonstrates the power of the mighty sovereign at work in the lives of black people in twentieth century America. This sermon focuses on the root of black strength and survivability. Wright makes it clear throughout the sermon that the source of all strength, and especially black strength, is none other than the Spirit of God." As in his preaching, in his writing Wright focuses on the
dual issues of corporate concern and spiritual sustenance. His latest publication, What Can Happen When We Pray: A Daily Devotional, was published in 2002.
In recognition of his contributions, Wright has been awarded seven honorary doctoral degrees. He has also served on a number of boards and commissions, including serving on the board of trustees for Virginia Union University and Chicago Theological Seminary. He continues to be a highly sought after preacher,
teacher, and lecturer.

4. Ummmmm, Obama Might End Up Being Unelectable Becase Of Rev. Wright. That's Just Political Reality.
We have to hope that turns out to not be the case, but one would be a naive fool if they didn't consider the possibility that the controversy will be used as quite a powerful one to impact us in the GE.

To call that argument worse than any republican smear is just on its face really quite stupid. It's a legitimate argument, and one many pundits have already wondered themselves.

6. The problem with that argument...
is that by the time Pennsylvania votes the truth about Reverend Wright will be known. This demonization of a life will not stand. There is too much written about the man and his accomplishments to keep people ignorant for so long. I am so familiar with the boomerang effect, and I have no doubt that it will work this time as well. I think this particular smear job was done too early to have the effect that so many hope for.

13.  "Black Liberation Theologyr" is now all the talk in the news and on the talking head shows....
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 01:13 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
CNN did a 30 min piece this morning on it all the time runing in loop in the corner with Rev Wright's sermon.

Obama's church is a product of the 'black liberation theology movement'

For the time being, I've read just about all the stories about Jeremiah Wright that I care to, and I'll bet most of you have, too.

This one, though, has something to add to the conversation.

Margaret Talev of the Washington Bureau of McClatchy Newspapers provides some historical context for the doctrines -- political and theological -- espoused by the recently retired pastor at Barack Obama's church, Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

Talev writes that "some of the more provocative doctrines" at the core of Wright's message -- Jesus is black, Marxism can aid in a true understanding of the Gospels, the white church in America is the Antichrist -- grew out of the writings of James Cone, the founder of the modern black liberation theology movement. "Particularly influential," she writes, "was Cone's seminal 1969 book, 'Black Theology & Black Power.' "

But there is more "truth" about the Rev Wright and his church. The fact they honored a hatemonger like Louis Farrakhan with an award with Rev Wright's name on it for one.

of more 'truth' about the Reverend and his truth. It is obvious that your hatred of the man is based on something other than his life and his worth as a human being. The 'hatemonger' is you.

Well, I think anybody that wants to HOPNOR a man that has called Jews bloodsuckers and has called Judaism a gutter religion is a prick. See how easy that is. I don't give a shit what else he has done, this is a subjective test on how he feels about me and he failed miserably. You want to keep defending the indefensible, knock yourself out.

37. Hillary is unelectable because she is a LIAR.
Her political history is too long and she forgets that people have access to things like video recordings, audio recordings, her own speeches, official first lady documents, and FACTS.

Obama may have been damaged by this Wright thing, but he'll recover. Hillary is just a worn-out lying political hack that has NO idea about campaigning in the 21st century. And the republicans are salivating at the thought of running against her. WHY DO YOU THINK RUSH AND OTHERS ARE TRYING SO HARD TO GET HER TO WIN?

5. This is the part where Obama supporters find out what it means to be a REAL Obama supporter.
The part where they find out about the necessity to stop saying snarky things to every commer and to get off of the internet, also to go out of their churches, and go out into the streets and neighborhoods to counter EVERY pronunciation by Corporate shills, such as Pat Buchanan, with real, honest, respectful, and personal dialogue with someone besides those who agree with them.

This is the part where Obama's supporters go out into the REAL world and make manifest the message that he spoke so clearly last week.

IF they can do that, his candidacy will survive, if they can't, then it was just an illusion (like SOOOOO much else) to begin with.

It will be interesting to see which of Mrs. Clinton's supporters here change their tune about Rev. Wright and actually do research some on him and listen to longer excerpts of his sermons which the "controversial" snippets were taken out of context. Will they then admit they were wrong and defend him or vote for McSame?
