7. Not so sure after. . .
I saw 'the Doctor' on Bill Moyers 'Now' on PBS, tonight and he didn't sound like the Howard Dean I knew and loved. He sounded like he was in favor of the war, a war he said we must 'WIN' even if it meant the death of a lot more Iraqis. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. It sounded like somebody got to him. Go to the PBS website. They probably have the interview available. Tell me I'm full of shit and didn't really see this. . . .:wtf: :nuke:

9. I was always more into Dean's campaign than in Dean himself
I liked Dean but I had no illusions that he was my ideal candidate.

I liked that he spoke out against Bush and invading Iraq when other Dems were cowering in fear. What made me so gung-ho for his candidacy was the "movement" his campaign inspired (well, his campaign managed to absorb aspects of an emerging movement into his campaign, anyway, which I didn't see the other candidates except Kucinich doing).

I still support what his campaign/candidacy stood for 100% and am proud that I gave so much of myself to helping it. I suspected, however, that I would have been one of Dean's loudest critcs had he become president (just as I was with Clinton).

I did not realize he was on there recently. He usually prefaces that statement about not being able to leave by saying "since we are already there."

Was this last night? It is the first mention I have seen, and I don't see anything at the website.

If the US doesn't fix this mess, then every one of us will be bigger targets than we were before. We have to go in with a better strategy and with our REAL ALLIES. Our real allies won't come along until we replace Bush.

Noone is advocating we kill more Iraqis. But bringing some order and maintaining it will be tough and needs a stronger, SMARTER hand at the helm.

Putting the UN in control in the forming of the Iraqi government and taking the US out of the profit making game will be a huge first step.

65. IMO, there's no way to 'fix' iraq, so there's no point getting any more
people killed. I opposed the war but i would certainly support doing anything possible to fix the situation now, but there is simply nothing that can be done to achieve anything remotely resembling the desired outcome. This war was a loser from DAY ONE, and many people knew it.

69. That's the fastest way to give the Taliban/Al Qaeda a REAL base of power.
Edited on Sun May-09-04 10:29 AM by blm
Bin Laden was gunning for Hussein for years, anyway, so he could install himself or a loyalist as head of state of Iraq.

Pulling out now would insure that happens.

Like it or not we can't turn our backs to the dynamics of the entire region which comes down to whether or not secular governments are in charge or Islamic fundamentalist extremists like the Taliban.

Even Kucinich wouldn't just pull out with no stability in place first.

24. The PBS - NOW Archive has nothing from May
http://www.pbs.org/now/archive_transcripts.html

But the other posters are correct.

Dean has often said that we wen't in wrong, that we should not have diverted our attentions from Bin Laden's thugs, and that we have made a mess of it while there. But despite these assertions, Dean has also said that this is our mess, and it is our responsibility to clean it up.

To drop and run at this point would ensure a freaking chaotic hell hole developing over the second largest reserve of crude oil in the world, a mess of conventional weapons, and a highly strategic location in the mideast.

Like it or not, we've fucked up. Now, we have got to exit better than we entered, or we compound the fuck up by a factor of W.

83. The U.S. presence is the cause of the problems
First, Dean was and is the greatest! Boy, do I wish he was leading the charge now instead of Kerry.

But I got to differ with the folks that say we will cause an even greater problem if we leave Iraq. The chaos over there now is a direct result of the brutal occupation.

This was never about "bringing democracy" to the Iraqis. Don't forget that this has been planned by the neocons for years. It's about the strategic control of the Middle East and the oil reserves.

That's why the Iraqis are being treated like dirt.

64. Yeah, i was a bit bummed by his kerry/war support; i'm sure he's
trying to present kerry in the best light, but the war is a fundamental issue (one that he was closely identified with), and to see him seem to support the pro-war side (kerry) was a bit disappointing.

27. Still here, too.
Though I admit I took a break of almost a month, once the primaries started, and didn't come back until it became clear Kerry was going to be 'the guy.' I can live with him, but his choice of VP will determine how active I can be in campaigning. An apathetic cheerleader is the last thing Kerry needs doing 'shoeleather work' for him, but if he chooses someone I find uninspiring as his running mate, well ... I know how to write a check and vote, and if that's the case, that's what'll happen.

I still like the enthusiasm the Dean campaign managed to stir up, and I hope that lasts beyond November even if Kerry is in the White House a year from now. Hell, especially then! After all, those of us who knew Dean was a fairly pragmatic moderate -- but found his articulation and the campaign's momentum encouraging, regardless -- are the ones who'll wind up making sure the left end of the agenda doesn't sink into oblivion, anyway.

Dean's agenda itself may not have been revolutionary, but even many of his detractors were forced to admit the people who got involved in the Dean campaign found the campaign itself exciting and energizing, whether they were really there for 'Howard Dean the candidate' or not. I was impressed by the fact so many people at the early Meetups said things like, 'I haven't given a shit about any of this for a decade, but I can't stand Bush and this guy makes me finally feel like I have a voice again.'

To ignore or abuse that feeling the Dean campaign inspired, especially by dissing Dean or the majority of his supporters, is to throw away the votes of the sector of people who hadn't been involved. I mean, they know people like me are going to vote for a cold ham and cheese sandwich in November if it has a "D" in front of it, they don't give a hang if they please me, and they're absolutely right. It's the formerly uninspired and uninvolved eligible voters who could be a great asset if they can be kept invested and interested.

Kerry clearly isn't discounting this sector of potential votes -- Dean's out there pounding the pavement for him, so obviously Kerry knows Dean's former 'fans' are important or he would have asked him to keep a low profile. I doubt very much either of them wants to have to deal with the possibility that they threw away even a small number of votes they could have had with a minimum of effort, especially if things don't go well in November (for whatever reason). Dean won't want to be seen as a 'spoiler,' either. I think (rightly) they all realize too much is at stake this year for that.

and loving it. I have more and more respect for Dean every day. I love how he's still out there stumping for Kerry and doing positive things for the party. It's been about two months since I've gotten over the fact that Dean will not be our nominee or president. I was bitter for a while but I think seeing Dean out there speaking made me realize how being bitter will only help Shrub.
Weather or not Dean will be prez, us Dean supporters can still make an impact on the party and the country.

40. To influence the leadership, BECOME the leadership!
That's what both the Dean and Kucinich camps have been doing in Minnesota. Most of the new blood in the party is from Dean and Kucinich folk. Not only have we run for precinct chair, county chair and/or district chair, we've WON the elections! Our people are on the platform committees, the rules committees, the constitution committees, etc.

To get the establishment to listen to you, prove your worth to them: work on the campaigns of other Demcrats, volunteer for the busy work, attend the meetings and conventions, and RUN FOR THE LEADERSHIP POSITIONS!

And remember, don't agonize-- ORGANIZE! Attend those meetings and events, and offer to help. Your energy and enthusiasm are contagious, and may even stir the long-dormant passions of some of the "old-timers". Every little bit helps!

Best of luck to all of you in your future party endeavors! Don't be afraid to challenge the status quo and tell it like it is!

:D

49. We are becoming the leadership
We have run for, and won county chair, precinct chairs, state delegate positions, and multiple committee chair positions, but we are being accused of trying to derail Kerry's candidacy, and worse. People just can't stand change, I think, can't stand to lose control, can't stand to lose power. It's been a frustrating process.

Again, to all who take umbrage with this post, get lost...you know who you are.

He appeared around Manchester today for Kerry, in addition to the America Votes rally.

He has been at several fundraisers for him, private homes, I think...this week alone. One in NJ.

He has not been on national TV since last Monday, but they were great appearances. This Week With George Stephanopolous is supposed to reschedule him soon as well. He was bumped last Sunday for the illustrious General Myers who proceeded to spin everything.

57. Ha Ha. Dean made an ad for Monday night football today.
I had heard he was going to make one, but I found this at the blog. I am wondering exactly what this will be. It sounds like fun.

SNIP..."What a great day. I had the time of my life. Started the day at 9 am in Manchester NH. Act, Naral, Environmentalists, Moveon.org SEIU and many other organizations were represented. We had some training then listened to Governor Dean rally the troops. We then hit the streets and canvassed till 3. When we got back to Headquarters, we were told that they needed extras for a commercial Dean was making for ....Listen up folks Monday night Football. You're going to love this commercial. It will be aired on the first Monday Night game. We all screamed (through numerous takes) waved our flags and signs, had balloons and confetti fall on us. We started acting like kids tossing and popping balloons. We all got a Monday Night Football hat and the Governor was gracious enough to stay and autograph them for us....."

That sounds like it was so much fun.

62. A big Dean fan here from Seattle...

and still running a Seattle4Dean Yahoogroup that I own (with almost 300 members) that concentrates on Dean and Kerry and DFA and any local races although it's been kind of slow lately:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Seattle4Dean/

He's been analyzed to death, but mostly folks tried to make him evil by taking his words out of context... and now the same thing is happening to Kerry,

66. Dean supporter--sort of
Pretty early in the primaries I identified Howard Dean and John Kerry as my favorite candidates. Kerry was my "head" candidate and Dean was my "heart" candidate. I Donated to both and agonized over which I would vote for if New Jersey (June) primary was going to be actually meaningful (LOL). Since the voters of Iowa and New Hampshire made the decision for the rest of the country, and since Dean has enthusiastically jumped on the Kerry bandwagon, I'm now a relatively happy Kerry supporter who sometimes wants to hit him over the head when he doesn't hit the populist and antiwar themes I liked from Dean. Since it ain't gonna make a damn bit of difference I'll vote my heart in our upcoming totally meaningless primary--unless the media really starts to spin other candidates strong showings in the late primaries as lack of Dem support for Kerry.

Does this make any sense at all?

as a "presidential candidate".

I have never stopped hanging at DU. I'm not sure what you mean by "Dean Supporter" in your question.
I have no idea if I qualify as a "Dean Supporter", since you have not defined exactly what you mean by that term, and he is no longer a "presidential candidate".

72. Here - and I just got a call from Dean
reminding me to vote yes on the healthcare issue on the ballot coming up on March 15th here in Travis County.

All politics is local - Dean reminded all of us of that.

Great hearing from the Doc. :)

73. the 2000 election fraud woke me up to politics. but last summer, dean got
me involved-- i made my first ever donation to a political candidate. he spoke up and gave us back our voices. i'm forever grateful. and i will always be his supporter. i also like wes clark, edwards, and kucinich. but i think kucinich needs to drop out and throw his support to kerry now. the bush ads aren't attacking democrats. they are attacking KERRY. we need to unite to win back the WH.

Still have my Dean for America yard sign up in my yard. Don't see any Kerry yard signs in my neighborhood, and no, I won't be putting a Kerry sign up in my yard either.

I'll be channelling my energy into helping 1 of the Dem candidates for the US Rep seat in my district. Want to take that seat back from the Repukes.
