9. I don't want him to resign
I want him to stay there and be a constant reminder to voters of what a f*ck up this war was - thanks in part to Rummy.

If he resigns, he will be out of the spot light. SOmeone else will take his place and he will be forgotten by a whole lot of voters by November.

12. I hear you but
I think it's important as a strong response, for the world to see, that we consider the torture intolerable. He shouldn't be the only one out, but he should be the first one out. That's important as a sign of national responsibility to the rest of the world (and it should be Democrats leading the way).

I think his resignation would not be forgotten, especially in the six months left before the election. The ongoing investigations will be a reminder.

I do know what you're saying, and I share your fear that Rummy's ouster could be seen as "Enough," excusing the Chimp and allowing the rest of them to go without scrutiny. But I think the drive for resignation is worth it.

14. It could work
to our advantage if there is a big drive for his resignation and he refuses to step down, but I fear that if he does step down Bush will use it as a big PR stunt to show that no one in his administration will be protected if they are in the wrong.

Rummy will resign and Bush will look like he's actually in charge (which he's not) and the American electorate will be all so impressed with his leadership that they will pull the lever for his chimpness in November.

I want to see Bush gone andd keeping Rummy around will do this administration more harm than good. Makes me think he probably will resign.

10. I'll sign, but..
if any, and I mean any, of the allegations of kids being beaten to break down older family members and similar allegations prove true, nothing short of having the entire administration removed will come close to satisfactory. They are a criminal reich. The word "cabal" is too good for these people.

The images of abuse in a U.S. run Iraqi prison couldn't be more disturbing.

Disturbing too is that Donald Rumsfeld and the Department of Defense knew about this and didn't take immediate action and didn't even inform the leaders in Congress. John Kerry has called for Donald Rumsfeld to resign -- and the Kerry Campaign is asking us to show support for his decision by endorsing his statement here:

http://johnkerry.com/petition/rumsfeld.php

I did -- and you should too.

16. Not signing it!
For several reasons:

Bush always gets off the hook, & Cheney gets blamed or Rummy gets blamed. Bush is the President. Hold him responsible.

Getting rid of Rummy will change nothing. Even Sen. Levin said this today.

Getting rid of Rummy will allow everyone to move on; OK, nothing here to see, let us all move on. No, if he stays it is a reminder of the entire corrupt administration.

In my opinion, I think this is stupid idea. It seems like a stunt, & I think Kerry could do better.

19. Me either, I agree with you

I think Kerry is making a big mistake by pushing this. I really think the repukes want rummy gone and don't have the guts to do it themselves, they are standing back and letting Kerry and the Democrats push for it. Getting rid of rummy will not change anything for the better, they will just claim that they have solved the problem and say now it's time to move on. Anything goes wrong in the war the repukes will blame the Democrats saying that they forced out rummy and were forced to put in someone less experienced. Of course that wouldn't be true but that has never stopped the repukes from making a charge and blaming others.

Edited on Sun May-09-04 03:33 PM by Hippo_Tron
Repukes didn't want him as a leader so they let us get rid of him. Granted that was about a week's worth of great entertainment so I suppose it was worth it.

23. I signed but have had second thoughts
If Rummy were to leave Bushco would use him as a scape-goat for everything that went wrong in Iraq. I think it would be better to keep him around so Bush can't use that excuse.

24. I signed it.
Rumsfeld is as good a place as any to start repairing our foreign relations. It is only fair since the privates who were allegedly given orders to torture the prisoners are being held responsible, that a person in a high place also take responsibility. We all know the military is a top-down organization, a place where if orders aren't followed, punishments are meted out.

Someone at the top needs to take personal responsibility with more than just words.

27. I'm leaning towards signing the petition
...because I think ousting Rumsfeld would help counter the shibboleth that R voters were fed in 2000: "Bush has good people around him". Rice and Powell's public embarrassments have helped to weaken this argument, and I tend to think that cutting Rumsfeld loose will weaken it further.

This redounds to our ultimate benefit, because the weaker Bush's team looks, the more emphasis is put on W. himself-and the more you scrutinize *, the worse he looks. It's not as if any replacement SoD is going to do anything different, and it's possible the new guy might have a less public role, in order to consolidate influence and avoid PR screwups.

Even though having him in play maximizes the embarrassment, keeping Rumsfeld around allows * to paint himself as "loyal" and "resolute", and fearful, information-deprived Republicans eat that shit up with a spoon. Ideally, we want to heighten such people's cognitive dissonance to the point that they vote D or not at all.

I still have difficulty accepting that that woman has any perceived credibility, given that she seems to be on the verge of crying any time she gets in front of a TV camera, but you're right.
