The fat lady clears her throat.
Time magazine blog, by Time political reporter Scherer:

Slowly We Turn, Step By Step
Posted by Michael Scherer
The Clinton Campaign has a growing problem: The media referees in the ring are itching to call the Democratic bout.

First we got the big Kahuna, New York Times chief political sage Adam Nagourney, weighing in A1-style yesterday on Clinton's diminishing chances to ever win the nomination. "If there is a road to victory for Mrs. Clinton, it is a fairly narrow one," he concluded, somewhat delicately.

Now we get a far more extraordinary verdict from Mike Allen and Jim VandeHei at Politico, who say not only that Clinton as "virtually no chance" of winning, but that those who think otherwise are space cadets.

Unless Clinton is able to at least win the primary popular vote — which also would take nothing less than an electoral miracle — and use that achievement to pressure superdelegates, she has only one scenario for victory. An African-American opponent and his backers would be told that, even though he won the contest with voters, the prize is going to someone else. People who think that scenario is even remotely likely are living on another planet. Everyone, including the Clinton camp, more or less agrees on the facts: Clinton will not win the pledged delegate battle, but she could come back to take the popular vote. (A debate remains over whether Michigan and Florida should count.) At that point, she would have to convince the Democratic Party that Obama, who is being increasingly painted as the nominee-in-waiting, should be pushed aside.

It's a tough sell, but it will be made a whole lot tougher if the media referees keep writing stories that describe Obama as the inevitable victor. This leaves reporters in the political equivalent of that weird Schrödinger's cat quantum physics conundrum: By observing a fact, you determine the outcome.

It is over for Hillary
She is behind in:
States
Delegates
Raw Vote
She is out of money
She is a proven liar (NAFTA)
and just about tied in Super Delegates (with more and more
going to Obama all the time) She will be behind in super delegates
by next week.

So to prove I am not sexist wanna meet me @ a Red Roof Inn
halfway between Texas and Ohio?

We could talk about the caucus.

3. I like the title.
Hey, Huckabee Clinton--oops, sorry, I meant Hillary--still can hope for the skies to part, angels to descend, etc, etc, and God can strike math down and award the nomination to Hillary.

The "fat lady" sings for men and women alike.

I'm female, no way a media type, and a long-time Hillary supporter until I realized that she cannot win.

11. That metaphor predates Senator Clinton's candidacy.
... it is actually a rather older expression, which occurs in several forms: It ain’t over till the fat lady sings, The opera isn’t over until the fat lady sings, or Church ain’t out ’till the fat lady sings.

This last version appears in a 1976 booklet by Fabia Rue Smith and Charles Rayford Smith entitled Southern Words and Sayings. Ralph Keyes wrote a book with the title Nice Guys Finish Seventh in 1992 in which he says that several informants recalled hearing the expression for decades before it suddenly became nationally known in 1978. The use of church here suggests that its origin didn’t lie either in opera or sport. It may even be a proverbial Southern expression.

One cannot invoke the metaphor, "the opera isn't over until the fat lady sings," unless one cites the exemplar role. The role is Brunhilde in Wagner's "Ring" operas.

Any soprano who can get through the Brunhilde role in "Gotterdammerung" is going to have substantial constitution. In the 20th century nobody fulfilled both those metaphoric and literal roles better than Kirsten Flagstad.

Judge for yourself (N.B. offsite image):

Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) was once interviewed by a reporter upon exiting a Metropolitan Opera performance in New York City. The performance was an opera by Richard Wagner. His response was one of the greatest back-handed compliments of all time,

"Wagner's music isn't as bad as it sounds."

Of course, the reporter undoubtedly neglected to factor in the "fat lady" factor...

Good post. :kick:ed and recommended.

BTW, I'm a huge opera fan. Also, Samuel Longhorn Clemens.

27. What at crock of shit. If everything was reverse of what it is now, with Hillary leading,
the fucking media would have discarded Obama a month ago. She has the Clinton name and they've hoodwinked the public into thinking she has a great chance to catch him when that is in fact a crock of shit. That they've waited this long to state the obvious is proof of bias for her.
