Poll question: Tell us about your use of DU's "Ignore Function"
So, how many people do you have on "ignore", and why?

Has putting people on ignore, changed your DU experience?

Do you have an underlying reason for putting people on "ignore"? Do you want their threads to
sink or are you just doing it to lower your own blood pressure?

If you don't use ignore, why?

1. I don't use the ignore feature, although it's been tempting
at times with some of the idiotic hateful posts lately... but I'd rather know what's going on and hear other views, even if I don't agree with them, than stick my head in the sand.

36. I agree
To me the ignore function is like putting your fingers and your ears and screaming at the top of your lungs when you don't hear exactly what you want to hear. Kind of like an adult, on line tantrum.

11. me too...
I am tempted to unclick just to see what they are saying, but then I already pretty much know anyway :)

I've been here since June '01, and have NEVER used ignore before..

I don't use it because I dislike anyone..just an so tired of the tediousness of their repetitive responses & their inability to grasp more than one concept at a time :)

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 09:32 AM by YOY
I have recently been put on ignore by several folks who didn't like my daring to oppose their candidate (first they called me a FReep and repeatedly insulted me...poorly.) If that's all it takes you aren't insulting anyone or denying anyone the comfort of your conversation, you're being a pompous ass.

Most likely they will be gone the moment their candidate understands the need to put a goddamn fork in it already so I'm not too worried about it.

6. I don't get that mad most of the time
and if I do I want to be able to respond. If it gets to be too much I'll put someone on ignore for a while but I consider it putting them in "time out" so I don't usually take too much of what is said here too seriously. I can usually find things I agree with them about as well.

Those people who are OTT usually end up getting a grave maker.

(Plus a few friends I don't wish to fight with.)

Once the primaries are settled, I will set everybody free and see what happens. I expect half of them will just go away on their own. It got to be such a useless exercise, trying to reason with people who are set on warring to the death, I said, fuck it, not worth the time and energy. I'd rather interact with humans who can reason together, no matter which candidate they support.

By the way, admins, you need to add a button so that it's easier to take everyone off the list at once.

I am a curious person, by nature, and when I click on a thread with many "ignored" on it, I am bedeviled with the question..

Is it ONE person who is repeatedly posting, or are there more than one waging "cyber-war" on the people who dared to post their opinions:rofl:

It's all I can do to keep myself from peeking...

but like soufflés, ignored posters are best left "alone"...

But then took the people off Ignore. Even though I think sometimes they don't bring much substance to the conversation, it would be worthless for me to ignore them.

I mean they might change their minds in the future, so it's not worth clicking that button. I was on this other website and this guy put me on ignore for arguing with him. Then I started to post OPs and the guy who ignored me took me off his list and read my OPs.

Just my two cents.

47. It's for the simple reason of separating the chaff from the wheat.
I have one person on Ignore. And it's not (as some posters have implied) for reasons of "being afraid of a different opinion" or because I'm not "man enough to take it". ("Man enough to take it"? WTF is that even supposed to mean?)

It's for the simple reason of separating the chaff from the wheat. Or, in a more relevant and direct context, separating those posters who have a valid contribution to discussion from those who act in manner more often than not like petulant, puerile children.

53. Been here since 2001 - 1st time I've used ignore: 20+

I hate the ignore feature. I hadn't used it in the past 7 years - at least until this primary season. I used it for the first time about a month ago, then cleared the list as I'm a curious masochistic bastard. Oy. Back on the list you go. It simply wasn't worth it.

Most of the people on the list have only been here a short while, and have nothing to say of substance. I finally got it through my thick skull that by engaging with them, I was only giving them more face time, and more opportunity to fling their feces around. Putting these jokers on 'ignore' saves my time and energy, and hopefully in the long run will make DU a better place.

I do have a safety valve on my ignore list however. If a certain condition happens, I will immediately remove a poster from my ignore list. So far my failsafe hasn't tripped, which indicates to me that I have pretty good judgment when it comes to clicking the red X.

54. I have those who rather than disagree, become disagreeable, on my list.
This has nothing to do with refusing to "hear" the other side of a debate (and I say this as someone who has listened to and read "the other side" via RW talkshows & commentary for the past 30 years).

In my case, it has to do with those who don't understand the concept of a "debate", and who prefer to substitute salient argument with what they think is witty, but what is in reality, juvenile name-calling and repetitive flamebait rhetoric. I have even seen some cut and paste their nonsense in post after post, both in a single thread or across multiple threads.
