How many thousands of times have we read this sentiment at DU?
Prior to the Civil Rights and Equal Accomodations Laws of the government in this country there was backed segregation by the country, legal discrimination by the government, prohibited Blacks from voting by the government, you had to eat in separate places by the government, you had to sit in different places from the white folks because the government says so, and you had to be buried in a separate cemetary. It was Apartheid American Style from the cradle to the grave. All because the government backed it up.

But guess what? Governments change. Under Bill Clinton, we got a messed up welfare-to-work bill, but under Clinton we had an intelligent friend in the Oval Office.

Oh, but governments change. The election was stolen. We went from an intelligent friend to a dumb Dixiecrat. A rich Republican, who has never held a job in his life. He is against affirmative action, against education, against health care, against benefits for his own military, and gives tax breaks to the wealthiest contributors to his own campaign.

Tens of thousands? Hundreds?

Has this sentiment ever been criticized at DU? Ever?

2. I'm sure someone has, but for the most part, of course not
then again, I am not convinced that many of the loudest complainers are being honest.

3. Yes. I tend to agree.
I do not embrace a "god damn America" sentiment, but in the context given, it's hard to argue against it.

4. Naw, it is more important right now
to bash both Clintons, plus a multitude of other fine Dems who appear to be dead to Obama supporters

5. And it's more important to bash Obama, who happens to support the man who spoke those words.

6. Thats what zealots do...
Makes me fear just what four years of Obama might really look like, seeing how intolerant many of his supporters are

8. It's a fantasy of the Obama supporters
that people are criticizing Wright's every position. That's not true.

The full context doesn't substantially change anything.

10. Yes - why would the "full context" affect anything?
So much better to base our opinions on a 15-second snapshot than to actually step back and fully assess anything.

:sarcasm:

11. On the contrary, it changes everything.
One cannot look at the full sermons for the "chickens coming home to roost" and "God Damn America" clips as well as the other Wright sermons and say that Wright hates America. Anyone who attempts that is closing their eyes and putting their fingers in their ears.

You would never hear me utter, "God damn America" nor would you ever hear me defend someone who did. However, the hysteria over those clips would have been zero if the full context had been given.

13. I watched the tapes
I don't feel it changes anything. I never thought that he gave a 30 minute sermon on how much he hates America. The full context was pretty much exactly what I thought it would be - and it doesn't change anything.

I've never said a negative word about those sentiments. But I'm fully aware that they're a political problem for Obama.

14. We're all fully aware that they are a poliltical problem for Obama.
Where we disagree is whether or not they should be, particularly within the confines of the Democratic Underground. I find it unusual that so many here would find Wright's words offensive or even out of the norm. How many times have we heard those same words here with no reaction at all?

12. In Amherst County, Virginia (ca. 15 miles from Jerry Falwell's church)
they maintain segregated cemeteries to this day.

So much for death being the great equalizer.
