*** FOX 'News' Selected to be Official Press Pool Broadcaster at the Democratic Convention!
Just heard Mike Rogers of blogactive.com , on the John Elliot's Air America Show, break and confirm this. The press office of the Democratic National Convention confirmed this, by phone, with Rogers. They've apparently known this since last September.

FOX NEWS managing the video/audio feed and output from our convention???!!! WTF is wrong with the Democratic Leadership?
Don't let this happen, please.

720-DNC-2008 (362-2008)

Email:

info@demconvention.com .

Office Location:

Democratic National Convention Committee, Inc.
1560 Broadway, Suite 400
Denver, Colorado 80202

Let's give them (and our Congress-peeps/DNC) a call and NOT let FOX/Murdoch edit and control the Convention feed.

:grr: :grr: :grr:

21. What's wrong with FOX News? Or Republicans for that matter? Obama thinks they're full of...
wisdom:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Thursday he would be more willing than Hillary Rodham Clinton to work with Republicans.

"Her natural inclination is to draw a picture of Republicans as people who need to be crushed and defeated," Obama said during a telephone interview from Texas with the Cincinnati Enquirer editorial board. "It's not entirely her fault. She's been the target of some unfair attacks in the past."

"I'm not a person who believes any one party has a monopoly on wisdom," Obama said.

You know I supported Dean big time in 2004! But dammit... some of the things that have happened as of late... the disaster with FL and MI... now this! It may not be Dean's fault, so it's wrong to blame when don't know much, but SOMEONE is responsible for this and they should be punished or fired! (Well, okay I don't want people without jobs, but they need to made to fix it.) How could this happen? They aren't even a NEWS organization; they are a right wing tabloid! What next, The National Enquirer brings you The State of The Union?

27. Excuse me, but...
The DLC leaders of FL & MI are responsible for the mess they're in. If our party sets an example of not following the rules, then we're no better than republicans, wouldn't you say? Dean also had nothing to do with this choice...apparently it's up to the media. I wonder if Geraldine drew the straw.

35. I think it could have been handled better
the original rules in the DNC rule book said the delegates should be halved. That is what the republicans did and it worked out fine for them. Dean wanted to show off, and after the changes were made in MI and FL Dean changed the rules of the DNC to be "no delegates at all". That was wrong, every person deserves to have their voice heard no matter what their leaders have done. If someone should be punished it should be the superdelegates. The super's should lose their votes. Since we live in a representative democracy, it was the leaders that made a bad choice, not the people. Therefore the people should not be punished, the leaders should. There was no statewide vote taken on this issue. Outside of DU I have yet to meet a single person who thinks that FL and MI has been handled well by the DNC. That goes for Obama and Clinton supporters alike... on the outside world.

26. I would like to know exactly what they're going to
control before I start getting all upset.

First of all, they don't get to control what the other networks air out of the convention.

The way it usually works is there's one camera set up to record the major speeches.

Any of the networks and affiliates who are there in Denver, plug into a mult box and grab the video and audio.

This is done so there aren't 50-plus camera crews on risers all recording the same thing where space is limited.

Unless something has drastically changed with the rules, network camera crews will still roam and get interviews. And the networks will all have their own sky boxes at the arena.

I wouldn't get too worked up about it .. especially since none of us have any information about the specifics.

The DNC would not let anything unfair slide through in this regard.

I'm sure of it.

28. Definition: Press pool
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Press_pool

Press pool refers to a group of news gathering organizations pooling their resources in the collection of news. A pool feed is then distributed to members of the broadcast pool who are free to edit it or use it as they see fit. In the case of print reporters, a written pool report is distributed to all members.

Reasons for Pool Coverage

Lack of Space

Pool coverage is sometimes required because of the nature of the news event being covered. For example, judges will often allow only one broadcast camera in the courtroom during a trial. As a result, interested broadcasters will select one of their own to provide the "pool camera" for the day, with that organization agreeing to share the footage with all other broadcasters in the pool.

Similarly, a daily rotating pool is set up at the White House for organizations that cover the president. They are allowed special access to certain events with the understanding that the information and footage will then be shared with the rest of the White House press corps. For instance, when the president meets with a foreign dignitary, the two will sometimes make a statement together in the Oval Office. Since it is not possible to accommodate all interested journalists in that room, pool coverage is the only practical way to handle the event.

Controlling Expense

At other times, pool coverage takes place as a more cost-effective way of covering events that only occasionally "make news." For example, the major networks usually rely on a pool feed of the daily briefing at the State Department for their live coverage, since the press conference is usually only of national interest when there is a significant breaking story relating to international diplomacy. Since "coverage" of such an event consists merely of pointing a camera at a person standing behind a lectern, a pool feed is a practical means of ensuring the event will be available as needed without all five major US TV news outlets paying for their own individual live crews.

Large Events

Pool situations are also often set up because of the physical enormity of covering certain events. One prominent example of this was the international broadcast of the state funeral of John F. Kennedy, which involved four major venues and a lengthy procession. Likewise, presidential inaugurations and political conventions tend to involve pool coverage in the US (particularly since there is no state broadcaster that would naturally handle the coverage on its own).

Press Pool v. Host Feed

An ordinary broadcast press pool is often confused with a "host feed." While pool coverage is always handled by press organizations, a host feed is provided by a third party (usually the organization being covered). For example, under normal circumstances, the only cameras allowed in the chambers of Congress are those operated by government employees under rules established by congressional leaders. (Contrary to popular belief, C-SPAN has no control over them.) Under such circumstances, press organizations have only two choices: take the host feed as it is or have no video at all.

Expectations of Pool Members

While there are not necessarily formal rules, there tends to be a set of informal expectations for pool members. Primarily, all pool members are expected to "share the load" equally. For example, in the case of ongoing events, a different station might provide a pool reporter and/or camera every day. For one-time events, each organization may have its own responsibility (such as providing all cameras or mobile trucks). If there are different venues, each location can be covered by a different member of the pool. If there is not a practical way to divide the responsibilities, organizations in the pool will split the cost.

In addition, it is paramount that no pool members use their special access in order to garner an "exclusive" for themselves. In the case of television, a pool photographer is expected to turn over all of the material that was taped rather than keeping certain select shots for his or her own employer. Print pool reporters are prohibited from including any detail in their own stories that was not included in the pool report, even it is only a matter of local color. As a result, White House pool reports are often written in excrutiating detail. At a state dinner, the report will likely include what the president ate and what color clothes he was wearing.

-----------------

I hope that means that they can't manipulate what is broadcast but I'd still prefer
they weren't the "official" anything at the Democratic Convention.

32. Talk about letting your oppenent "frame" the issues...
Just think of the possibilities for mischief--

--cutaways from the podium to delegates who may appear to be sleeping, who are putting their heads together to laugh and chit-chit, etc.

--when issues over which Obama and Hillary fought are raised on the podium, cutaways to the losing candidate;

--priority not for what's happening on the podium but rather for any of the many commotions sure to take place in the aisles;

etc.
