Remember this name: Sinclair Broadcast Group
SNIP "(Reuters) - A major television chain, the Sinclair Broadcast Group, will bar its ABC-affiliated stations from airing a planned "Nightline" tribute to fallen U.S. troops in Iraq, saying the program is a political statement disguised as news...Sinclair said the 'Nightline' segment 'appears to be motivated by a political agenda designed to undermine the efforts of the United States in Iraq.'"

SNIP "Sinclair's boycott drew a sharp rebuke from U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, a New York Democrat and leading congressional critic of newly relaxed media ownership regulations adopted last year by the Federal Communications Commission. 'The decision by Sinclair ... to keep this program off its stations is being made by a corporation with a political agenda without regard to the wants or needs of its viewers,' Hinchey said. 'This move may be providing a chilling look into the future if we allow media ownership to be consolidated into fewer and fewer hands.'"

Another crucial reason to vote for Kerry. With Hinchey's help, Kerry might be able to reverse this dangerous trend. If we don't get Kerry, we might be in very deep shit, indeed.

Earth to Ralph Nader. Did you get this message?

2. Wait a minute...
isn't Sinclair doing it basically as an "anti-war" type of protest? Just because one Dem doesn't like it doesn't mean its all bad.

6. Why would this be a reason to vote for Kerry?
I don't recall him saying anything about busting up media whore monopolies. In fact, I seem to remember him taking money from FAUX.

There was a candidate who pledged to break up media monopolies. Funny how the DLC helped the whores take him down huh?

Well, actually it's not funny. Not in the least. It's sickening :puke:

Don't expect Kerry to stop the state owned media.

12. Let's ask him whether he has the same passion against
media concentration as U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey. I assume that Kerry would push for a new FCC chairman who would be against this concentration and who would, in fact, tighten the rules. Let's ask him: Would you appoint an FCC chairman who would tighten the rules regarding concentration of ownership in media?

13. After Dean mentioned that he would break up big media,
Edited on Fri Apr-30-04 09:57 AM by DaveSZ
the corporate media portrayed him as insane. They helped deal the deathblow to his candidacy, though he was already having problems before the Iowa vote.

This makes me wonder whether or not it would be wise for Kerry to speak out against the corporate media, since he needs it to win.

Damn this is Clinton's fault this mess we're in.

15. Correct. But Kerry could say something about the FCC chair
position. He doesn't need some sweeping indictment of the media.

Isn't it a fascist viewpoint you are advancing?

17. The media IS controlled by the state now. That's the problem
Clear Channel was founded with BUSH money. John Ellis of FAUX News is Junior's first cousin (and Jeb's namesake) This is beyond corporate consolidation, it's literally fascist, state controlled media.

I agree it is fascist, state controlled media. Why I don't understand is how you can support such a system.

19. I really don't see the relationship of Sinclair's abhorrent stance
to recent FCC rule relaxations: my impression is that Sinclair isn't anywhere near the present or past limits.

However, they do seem to be a poster-child for right-wing media ownership. If you haven't just eaten, read their statements here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A55041-2004Apr29.html (link brought to my attention by www.realdems.org, a small but growing enclave of progressive Democrats).
