They've done it again
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 05:22 PM by JohnnyRingo
The Republicans have a knack for turning around the Dems strongest suit, and using it against us.

John Kerry was a Vietnam war hero, and Silver Star honoree.
Enter the Swiftys.

Howard Dean was an on-message speaker with a sophisticated internet platform.
YouTube: YEEEAAAUGH!

John Edwards was a populist blue collar advocate with great curbside appeal.
Effete Breck Girl Millionaire.

Dennis Kucinich expressed simple common sense solutions to complex problems.
Flying Saucers.

Al Gore worked tirelessly to research the effects of industry on the environment.
He thinks he invented the internet.

Well, they've done it again!
In the last two weeks, they've effectively turned the Democratic contenders, a black man and a white woman... into racists.

Let me say that again, the two most diverse candidates in history are being portrayed as bigots, while the Republican, a white man with white hair from a white state, stands tall above the fray and unaffected.

Of course, McCain doesn't want to weigh in on his tolerance for diversity... that doesn't work well within his party, and doing so only boosts his opponents appeal and would cost him a portion of the conservative vote. A wink, a nod, and a reference to "corporate tax cuts" and "cuts in entitlement spending" suffice to express his genetic loyalty.

Instead, what do they do?
Show the other party as "just as bad", to level the playing field. Their ultimate hope, I believe, is to present the voters with a bland choice of options that seem equal on the surface and separated only by partisan preference.

How do they do it?
They just throw the allegations into the media blender, both TV and internet, and let the frenzied pundits do their jobs.

What do we do about it?
...I don't know.

I'm proud that the Democratic party has produced two candidates that would have been unheard of ten years ago, and it breaks my heart to see them played as intolerant gender-stereotyping, race-baiting intolerant monsters.

I know better, and wish there was a way to fight these submarine tactics by those who strive for a status quo government in which GW Buxh lives on through another term by proxy.

13. It's selective awareness; a handy trait for the zealot
As for the thread-starter: the reactionaries are good at slagging opponents; one of Obama's impediments is that he's a veritable xenophobe's delight.

8. yup John McCain campaign fans the flames
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/03/john...

We didn't get the e-mail here at Top of the Ticket, but apparently the John McCain campaign included in a morning briefing to reporters a link to a Wall Street Journal column that weighs in quite strongly on the Rev. Jeremiah Wright-Barack Obama relationship.

They are pitting dem against dem

9. What do we do about it?
How about civil campaigns focused on the issues, the core strengths of the candidates, and capitalizing on the massive increase in popular participation?

(no laughing please - it is possible!)
