Obama Doesn't get it . He heard plenty of sermons but he sees nothing wrong
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 03:45 PM by NewHampster
You may not like newsmax but an eye witness report is an eye witness report.
http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2007/8/8/1...

Presidential candidate Barack Obama preaches on the campaign trail that America needs a new consensus based on faith and bipartisanship, yet he continues to attend a controversial Chicago church whose pastor routinely refers to "white arrogance" and "the United States of White America."

In fact, Obama was in attendance at the church when these statements were made on July 22.

Wright's strong sentiments were echoed in the Sunday morning service attended by NewsMax.

Wright laced into America's establishment, blaming the "white arrogance" of America's Caucasian majority for the woes of the world, especially the oppression suffered by blacks. To underscore the point he refers to the country as the "United States of White America." Many in the congregation, including Obama, nodded in apparent agreement as these statements were made.

How could Obama or any good American with political aspirations continue to listen to the filth this man spewed on a weekly basis? How could he have this racist anoint his daughters with holy water? The answer is that Obama sees nothing wrong. Obama doesn't get it.

Several prior remarks by Obama's pastor have caught the media's attention:

  • Wright on 9/11: "White America got their wake-up call after 9/11. White America and the Western world came to realize people of color had not gone away, faded in the woodwork, or just disappeared as the Great White West kept on its merry way of ignoring black concerns." On the Sunday after the attacks, Dr. Wright blamed America.

  • Wright on the disappearance of Natalee Holloway: "Black women are being raped daily in Africa. One white girl from Alabama gets drunk at a graduation trip to Aruba, goes off and gives it up while in a foreign country and that stays in the news for months."

  • Wright on Israel: "The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for over 40 years now. Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community and wake up Americans concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism."

  • Wright on America: He has used the term "middleclassness" in a derogatory manner; frequently mentions "white arrogance" and the "oppression" of African-Americans today; and has referred to "this racist United States of America."

Senator Obama's supporters love to point to his "judgment". His judgment in not backing the Iraq war. I'll give him that. He was right.

But one good judgment in a lifetime of bad judgments does not make a President. In his book, Obama calls Reverend Wright his mentor yet he now seeks to distance himself and say he had no idea what his mentor was preaching. That my friends is politics as usual, in fact that is plain old lying in order to try and sweep away a relationship that he should have ended years ago.

Obama sees nothing wrong. Obama doesn't get it.

*emphasis is mine
edited to remove the war reference which has nothing to do with this argument

14. He Never Said He Wasn't There For Any Of Them
He said he wasn't there for some of the ones he finds most egregious. He never said he wouldn't keep attending if he would have heard them. He said, he would have quit if Wright kept repeating them.

You apparently can't hear very well. They do have help for that you know.

Do you assume that everyone condemns what the pastor said?

Ever attend a black church?

Ever wonder why many churches are still segregated, although some are not?

Don't you see the matters Clinton protected involving BCCI were far more dangerous to this country than anything Wright ever said, especially since BCCI matters led directly to the emergence of Bush2, 9-11, and this Iraq war?

There is no there there.

Please stop milking this. What you are doing is dangerous as you are participating in the politics of division, and the politics of ennuendos, and the politics of guilt by association, and the politics of personal destruction.

The emphasis is yours, and it shows.

If you are this desperate to have your candidate win, based on this, than you are no better than Newsmax.

Stop the hate and stop the racism by demonizing Rev. Wright for your own use.

40. No I'm not
I'm a proud liberal who protested the Vietnam war, marched for Civil rights and helped give you the right to think you know better than me.

The definition of Progressive is not someone who agrees with everything you say. It is not an Obama supporter. A progressive in fact does not like being told how to think or what to say. We have minds of our own

I don't know you, only what you present on this board, and within your posts in this thread, I don't believe that you are a progressive.

a progressive believes in progress and does not regress to McCarthism. A liberal does not act like he/she has been struck with some kind of divine inspiration to be right about everything....but yet you are most righteous about never letting this go.

You are the essence of anything goes for the sake of the politics of personal destruction.

that I am Jewish and I have a hard time with this.

"The Israelis have illegally occupied Palestinian territories for over 40 years now. Divestment has now hit the table again as a strategy to wake the business community and wake up Americans concerning the injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism."

It isn't even that important to me but I think Israel might be our best friend and therefore we need to be theirs.

something Obama (the guy you don't even think is a Democrat) has said will be a priority of his, since he acknowledges there are problems and says he owes his place in the world to blacks and Jews who worked together for civil rights in the South, instead of this kitchen sink bullshit OP.

is we tried for 9 months but nobody listened. we tried to get the press to ask questions and none would. we tried to get DUers to question Obama but, nope.

We've sort of figured out that Axelrod planned a campaign of issues avoidance.

All we have left is the kitchen sink. Throw everything we have and see what sticks.

Sucks doesn't it.

143. Right.
The posts referred to in the OP are not the quotes that have caused the uproar...namely the "God damn America" quote and the comments about Hillary. He has said that he had not heard those particular sermons, and he was clear that if he had he would have called him to task on it.

The fact that this guy has said controversial things is no secret. If you watch the interview of Barack by Olberman, he admits to as much. In the interview, he was referring to these two particular sermons that the media seems to have singled out when he said he wasn't present. He wasn't there. He didn't hear it, and if he did, he would have called him out on it.

Where exactly is the parsing? Watch the interview if you feel I've paraphrased.

52. Sorry, the OP is so full of errors, it would be difficult to respond.
Not to mention that every single person I have heard say that he preached hate for 20 years is probably not familiar with .01% of the sermons he has preached. I would say that it is YOU, not Obama, that doesn't get it.

Let's assume for just one second that you are correct. Let's pretend the Reverend Wright preached a hate sermon for 20 years. The fact that you, and others, are just now becoming aware of this proves Reverend Wright's point. White America DOES have a history of turning their backs on the African American community. They are largely unaware of what is going on, and don't care until it becomes a part of something that concerns them - like an election.

If you have been calling for Reverend Wright's removal for 20 years then I apologize. If you just started caring when this story "broke" then you're the sermon, dude. I hate to break it to you, but whether you want to hear it or not...a lot of what he says is true.

124. I'm still trying to figure out what he lied about. I don't see anything there
about KKKA or God Damn America or anything about Hillary. None of those things that were shown in those videos.

You might call what you posted above as divisive, but I see it as speaking truth to power. There IS a white arrogance, and many people here on DU show it (an example would be I saw earlier today where it was said that blacks should be glad there was slavery). And there is a White America. And a Black America. Not unlike the two Americas that John Edwards speaks about. As a matter of fact, Black America is a large subset of the poor America that Edwards speaks of. And rich America--well, that is full of those White Americans.

Are you also calling Edwards divisive and did he spout hate speech?

126. No, what he said was that he didn't know about those inflammatory
clips that were on Faux. Actually, he had heard about one of them (not mentioning which one) before he started his run for the candidacy, and he only had heard about the other one when it aired on Faux.

Why does he donate $23,000 to the church? What's his income? 10% tithe is normal. My parents tithe at least that every year. The money goes to support programs and ministries run or supported by the church. I bet Hillary tithes to her church, as well, but she won't release her tax records for us to know about that.

doesn't change that. It's basically an honorarium that must be renewed each year by the diocese. Both of my parents are lay ministers.

141. Hmm...'new politics' = same as the 'old politics'. Very interesting final paragraphs:
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 07:48 PM by libbygurl
Political pundits have suggested that Obama's problems with Wright are not ones based on faith, but pure politics. The upstart presidential candidate needs to pull most of the black vote to have any chance of snagging the Democratic nomination. Obama's ties to Wright and the activist African American church helps in that effort.

But the same experts same those same ties may come to haunt him if he were to win the nomination and face a Republican in the general election.

The worry is not lost on Wright.

"If Barack gets past the primary, he might have to publicly distance himself from me," Wright told The New York Times with a shrug. "I said it to Barack personally, and he said 'yeah, that might have to happen.'"

So much for the pure-as-driven-snow, innocent St Obama. Anything for political expediency.

162. There's no proof to the OP's assumption.
which is an accusation of thoughtcrime. "he sees nothing wrong"... in other words, prove he isn't thinking it.

the *proof* is that Obama has never echoed these sentiments. ever. neither in words nor in actions. If he did, we'd be hearing about his quotes and not Wright's. We KNOW which of Wrights words he approves of, because he "steals" them in his speeches and book titles and whatnot.

the feigned outrage is in the OP. The racist accusations are in the OP. Wright's statements are over the top, but that's about it. Obama was in the congregation. that's about it.

153. For me, its Obama or Mccain..
First Obama's candidacy was downplayed even in the African-American circles as lacking legitimacy. Remember, "is Obama back enough" to win black support? That was taken care of quickly when compared with the phony race-baiting politics of Ms. Clinton who along with her husband had been given unfettered support in the AA communities especially by our black elected officials. Why?

Did our inner-city youth complete high schools and attend universities in unprecedented droves during the Clinton years? Did the scourge of drugs and crime prevalent in inner cities throughout america significantly diminish through sustained programs and policies attributed to their initiatives while in the White House? Did our prison and justice system stop looking less than court rooms in Nairobi with fewer of our people making acquaintances with the system? Or did, our communal hope and overall afrocentric pride finally take root and manifest itself during their years at the presidency?
Perhaps, Bill Clinton initiated programs designed to promote self sustenance and upward economic mobility? So why this oft repeated bogus and indeed insulting Clinton label as "the first black president"?

Then I thought Obama was deemed as a Muslim? If not a practitioner, at least a sympathizer. It turns out he has attended a Christian church for twenty years! But that wasnt good enough for those majoring in divisive politics. Reverend Wright said in 2005 speech/sermon that America would never elect a black president. Well his claims are slowly taking shape. Will America allow this hate mongers prophesy to come true? Or will it rise above the politics of personal destruction and allow Obama to be judged by his works and sole character, not by the works of Rev. Wright or the perceived shortcomings of black America?

I for now will not feel sorry for Obama were he not to win this nomination. He has a wonderful job, is still young, has inspired America and beyond that has a slamming and intelligent wife and two wonderful and beautiful daughters.
But I would do my utmost to win votes for McCain should Clinton represent the DP. In distancing himself and right away from Bill Cunninghams politics recently showed me what I need to see in a leader. Clinton on the other hand, gaffe after gaffe, topped with the Obama as far as I know is not Muslim interview. Pathetic!

Chicago's Trinity UCC is 'great gift to wider church family'

Written by J. Bennett Guess
March 14, 2008

In the wake of misleading attacks on its mission and ministry, Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ is being lauded by United Church of Christ leaders across the nation for the integrity of its worship, the breadth of its community involvement and the depth of its commitment to social justice.

"Trinity United Church of Christ is a great gift to our wider church family and to its own community in Chicago," says UCC General Minister and President John H. Thomas. "At a time when it is being subjected to caricature and attack in the media, it is critical that all of us express our gratitude and support to this remarkable congregation, to Jeremiah A. Wright for his leadership over 36 years, and to Pastor Otis Moss III, as he assumes leadership at Trinity."

Thomas says he has been saddened by news reports that "present such a caricature of a congregation that been such a great blessing."

"These attacks, many of them motivated by their own partisan agenda, cannot go unchallenged," Thomas emphasizes. "It's time for all of us to say 'No' to these attacks and to declare that we will not allow anyone to undermine or destroy the ministries of any of our congregations in order to serve their own narrow political or ideological ends."

Located in the heart of Chicago's impoverished Southside, Trinity UCC's vast array of ministries include career development and college placement, tutorial and computer services, health care and support groups, domestic violence programs, pastoral care and counseling, bereavement services, drug and alcohol recovery, prison ministry, financial counseling and credit union, housing and economic development, dozens of choral, instrumental and dance groups, and diverse programming for all ages, including youth and senior citizens.

Thomas, a member of Pilgrim Congregational UCC in Cleveland, has attended worship at Trinity UCC on a few occasions -- most recently on March 2 -- and sys he is "profoundly impressed" with the 6,000-member congregation.

Among Trinity UCC's crowning achievements, Thomas says, is its work with young people.

"While the worship is always inspiring, the welcome extravagant, and the preaching biblically based and prophetically challenging, I have been especially moved by the way Trinity ministers to its young people, nurturing them to claim their Christian faith, to celebrate their African-American heritage, and to pursue higher education to prepare themselves for leadership in church and society," Thomas says.

'Exceedingly gracious'

The Rev. Steve Gray, the UCC's Indiana-Kentucky Conference Minister, describes Trinity UCC as a "jewel."

"It's everything a Christian community is supposed to be," says Gray, who has been working with Trinity UCC for the past three years to develop a new UCC congregation in Gary, Ind. "Trinity has given well over $100,000 in support of its partnership with us, and in 15 months of regular meetings with Jeremiah Wright, we always found him to be a man of gracious hospitality, humor, generosity, who paid attention to detail but also a man who does not call attention to himself."

Trinity UCC has been involved in planting more than 15 new congregations, according to the UCC's Evangelism Ministry in Cleveland.

Gray, a member of First Congregational UCC in Indianapolis, has worshiped several times at Trinity UCC and is most impressed by the overflowing sense of welcome it extends to visitors.

"When you're Euro-American, the people are so exceedingly gracious, warm and welcoming. They hug you and say, 'Welcome to our church!'"

Many, including Gray, point with appreciation to Trinity UCC's generous support of denominational and ecumenical ministries. From 2003 to 2007, Trinity UCC gave more than $3.7 million to Our Church's Wider Mission, the UCC's shared fund for connectional mission and ministry.

'Extraordinary outreach'

The Rev. Bennie Whiten, retired Massachusetts Conference Minister who prior served for 15 years as associate director of Chicago's Community Renewal Society, says, "Trinity was one church that we could always rely on to respond almost immediately. They have been very, very involved in the community in so many meaningful ways."

Noting the church's work in health care, early childhood education and economic development, Whiten says, "The scope of their concern and outreach is extraordinary. It's really just an outstanding congregation."

Whiten, a member of Pilgrim UCC in Oak Park, Ill., is especially taken with Trinity UCC's commitment to the need and importance of quality theological education. More than 60 members of Trinity UCC are currently enrolled in seminary and pursuing masters-level degrees. Moreover, the congregation pays for students' tuition costs.

"They firmly believe in the UCC's commitment to an educated, seminary-trained clergy," Whiten said, "and they have probably had more people feeling the call to ministry than any other church in the denomination."

The Rev. Susan Thistlethwaite, president and professor of theology at UCC-related Chicago Theological Seminary, says Trinity UCC is a model church in the way it supports its people in discerning and cultivating their gifts for ministry, both lay and ordained.

"Another thing I really appreciate about Trinity is that its ministries are always directed both inward, toward the congregation itself, and also outward in supporting other congregations ecumenically and supporting community organizations that are dedicated to lifting up the wider society," Thistlethwaite says. "We have had so many fine students come through Chicago Theological Seminary who were helped to discern their call to ministry through this church's dedication to serving the wider church."

'Jesus and justice'

The Rev. Kenneth L. Samuel, pastor of Victory UCC in Stone Mountain, Ga., says he is impressed that Trinity UCC "promotes spirituality and piety while also being emphatic about social justice."

While Trinity UCC is the denomination's largest congregation, Samuel's 5,300-member church is the UCC's second largest. Founded in 1987, it joined the UCC in 2004.

"Trinity was really one of the churches that inspired me to want to affiliate with the United Church of Christ," Samuel said. "My church was originally National Baptist and Southern Baptist, but it was the critical-thinking that brought to this work, the justice work, that helped me to want to become a part of the denomination. I have no regrets about that."

Samuel says that, during Wright's 36-year ministry at Trinity, Wright has not been afraid to tackle difficult topics, while staying equally committed to preaching "Jesus and justice."

"There have been two major sins in the Black church that many Black churches will not address homophobia is one and sexism is another," Samuel says, "and Jeremiah Wright has been one of the articulate, courageous voices that has not been afraid to address these critical issues. If he can do that and still maintain his close connectivity to the Black community, and stay grounded in the Black ethos, that's what has inspired me."

'Speaks well for us'

Carol Brown, national president of United Black Christians and a member of Cleveland's Mt. Zion UCC for more than 50 years, describes Trinity UCC as "the flagship church of the United Church of Christ."

"I think it's very interesting that a minority group within a denomination can have the largest church, support the most ministries and give the largest number of OCWM dollars," Brown says. "That speaks well for us as an accepting, open and affirming denomination. Especially, as a justice-oriented church, sets a standard for all the denomination that all are welcome."

Brown, who worships at Trinity UCC when in Chicago for meetings, says she is most taken by its exuberant spirit.

"It's certainly a very welcoming church, and it's certainly very reaffirming of the faith when people join in such large numbers when there's an altar call," Brown says. "It's something that you don't see in the average church. God is certainly at work there, and it's exciting when you see that many people stand up to witness to their faith and step forward."
