Clinton Monsters swiftboat Obama for attending an African American church.
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 11:27 AM by ClassWarrior
The wingnuts, with the help of the Clinton Bullies here, have tried to tar Obama for the fact that he doesn't attend a nice, civil, repressed white church. But Obama stood up to the swiftboating with grace, intelligence, and humor. Plus he signalled that he's prepared to stand up to it whenever it rears its ugly, hateful head again.

So isn't it about time you stood up for Obama? Say farewell to the junior swiftboaters here untill we have a nominee, and use that time to take action:

C'mon folks. Pennsylvania is sooner than you realize.

1. Well, that's not exactly true
There are plenty of black churches that don't have sermons like the ones Wright has been exposed to have given. There are black church preachers who give more mainstream sermons that aren't as controversial. He's being swiftboated for going to a church that has a controversial, angry preacher.

The problem I have with this is that we do have freedom of speech and religion in this country. I don't know why it matters that Wright is an "angry black man," especially since he has pretty good reasons to be angry. America has damned black people for quite a while, even to this day.

3. This is about pushing the meme of the scary, immoral black man.
You know as well as I do that if Obama attended one of those more "mainstream" black churches, the wingnuts and the Bullies would have found some excuse to flog his pastor anyway.

Because this isn't about Rev. Wright's fiery oratorical style. It's about promoting the stereotype of the scary, immoral black man. That's what swiftboaters do. Any means justifies the ends.

7.  I don't think they could go that route
You can't try to peg a black man who goes to a black church as immoral if he is listening to sermons that sound like they were written by Jerry Falwell. There are black pastors of black churches that sound quite a lot like what you'd expect to hear at Thomas Road Baptist Church. They go after gay people hard. They can rant and rave about things they decide are immoral like nobody's business.

2. I could be wrong...

..but I personally see this blowing over. It will piss off some people, but I doubt it will turn *most* people off from Obama in the long run.

4. "God Damn America"
Did he think that would get votes in middle America? Did he think the McCain people would give him a pass? They'd play nice because he's a newbie? They'd smile fondly and tell Rush to just shush now?

14. I guess he should just keep saying God Bless America
Which to me, is even worse. Damn? Aren't we blessed enough? Does anyone in this country understand true poverty?

Besides, what does Wright's views have to do with Obama?

17. That's what you say if you want to be president
No election will be won by a person who damns America or who associates very closely with someone who does.

Americans are not an introspective type people. We like to dream about the feel good changes that Obama talks about but abhor real change that starts with looking at what is wrong with ourselves. That's just the way it is.

15. Yeah, and I'm done with the Telly-Tubbies, whom I blame for Malaria.
In fact, I'm through with a whole lot of things that don't have anything to do with other things. Because it is easier to act outraged than it is to educate myself as to the actual facts.

18. The stinking, rotten "kitchen sink" strategy will only hurt Clinton in the long run.
Her slime campaign is revolting and Democrats will reject her and her corrupt campaign.

There are too many problems in this country for people to get wrapped around the axle about former pastors.

It just makes people stand up even stronger for Obama- standing against racial divisions and bigotry.

20. Not All African American Ministers Preach Race Hating and Baiting Alongside The Gospel
Thank you for at least not playing the insulting game of how Obama missed tainting from all the "bad" sermons.

This "Clinton Bully" would have MUCH preferred he attended a nice, civil, "repressed" church where hate, divisiveness, anti-white antagonisms, incendiary racial conspiracy theories, and wholesale damning of one's own country along racial divides aren't being preached from the pulpit and (especially) spoon-fed to the children of the congregation as Christianity. Add this to quotes from Michelle Obama regarding pride or lack thereof in her country, for a telling glimpse into its consistency with the probable Obama family dynamic.

Folks, this goes beyond black pride and activism, and perhaps somebody besides me and the "wing nuts" realize it, or I might not be reading so many DU threads of mutual reassurance on the issue.

Denouncing specific over-the-top comments is one thing, especially those caught on tape and irrefutable. But I don't know how you can distance yourself from twenty years of VOLUNTARY immersion in-and spiritual identification with-that paranoiac and militant atmosphere. My gut feeling now of course is that this association is totally in keeping with his private philosophies, or he would be attending elsewhere long ago.

No swiftboating, here. No bullying. The man has another troubling association-or shall we say-an association that is troubling to many, an association fundamental to shaping his adult character. I don't know how to rationalize it away (any more than I can rationalize away how the Rezko thing keeps expanding). The answer to it is not "But what about Hillary?" The answer is not "Concern noted-now go away." You can disagree with me vehemently, but I can't be any more sincere or plain-spoken when I say it's an issue that will not easily be overcome with a few glibly scripted candidate comments, or supporters whistling in concert past the political graveyard.

Clinton Monsters (very nice...) swiftboat (ignorant) Obama for attending an African American church (a contemptible race-baiting lie)

Something I love about the Obama cohort is that they are an overwhelming majority here that persecutes a rather pathetic minority (Clintonistas), yet is overwrought with self-pity and describes that minority group as bullies.

NEWS FLASH: Being in the vast majority gets you no "underdog" points. Kicking around about 15 abused souls is not fighting the power.
