Follow the Money: Obama attempts to "quell" Rezko controversy
In an "intensive interview" with the Chicago Tribune's David Jackson on Friday, March 14, 2008, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) said that indicted political fixer Antoin "Tony" Rezko was a "more significant fundraiser" in Obama's "earlier political campaigns than previously known." According to Obama, Rezko "raised as much as $250,000 for the first three offices Obama sought."

Obama said that he "hoped" the interview "would quell the lingering controversy over his relationship with Rezko" and said that "voters concerned about his judgment should view it as 'a mistake in not seeing the potential conflicts of interest'," Jackson wrote. "Obama also said for the first time that his private real estate transactions with Rezko involved repeated lapses of judgment. The mistake, Obama said, was not simply that Rezko was under grand jury investigation at the time of their 2005 and 2006 dealings. 'The mistake was he had been a contributor and somebody involved in politics,' he said.

Jackson also reported that

Obama said that when he questioned Rezko about news reports of his questionable political dealings, his friend assured him there was nothing wrong. "My instinct was to believe him," he said.

Asked if he ever thought Rezko would expect something from their relationship, Obama was definitive. "No, precisely because I'd known him for years and he hadn't asked me for favors." ...

Though Obama insists he has answered all inquiries, his campaign's piecemeal written statements have left lingering uncertainties about whether the up-and-coming senator exchanged favors with the target of a federal probe.
In an exclusive interview with the Chicago Sun-Times' Abdon M. Pallasch, Obama said "he and his wife Michelle had 'two or three dinners' with indicted businessman Tony Rezko and his wife over the years and made one day trip to the Rezkos’ home in Lake Geneva" and that Rezko was not his "'largest fund-raiser but a significant fund-raiser' on his campaign for U.S. Senate."

((((WAIT!)))) did he just admit a trip to Lake Geneva? 5 hours, in front of the whole nation has turned into ...a HUGE LIE!

No mention was made by either reporter as to whether Obama intended to dispose of more Rezko-related campaign funds.

ABC News' Jake Tapper commented "Again, the Obama campaign seems to handle these things by closing their eyes, holding their breath, and hoping a starstruck media will leave it at that.

"But this ain't no Senate race against Alan Keyes."

Rich Miller listened to the audio of Obama's interview with the Tribune and posted a partial transcript at his The Capital Fax Blog:
Obama told the Tribune that the lot next to the house already had an option on it when he first looked at it. He said that his realtor told him at the time that the house was proving difficult to sell. His broker said the house was overpriced, so he wanted to get an estimate of the value. Rezko was an "active developer" in that particular part of town so Obama and his wife decided Obama would approach Rezko and ask him to take a look.

Rezko, Obama said, at that point discovered that the person who had the option of the lot was a former employee of Rezko’s. Rezko asked Obama why he wasn’t interested in buying the lot. Obama said it wasn’t worth it to us to spend an extra $600K or so on that lot. Rezko said he might be interested in purchasing it. Obama said his response was "that would be fine." Obama said he should have said that Rezko’s purchase wasn’t a good idea.

After getting it inspected, Obama offered, through his broker, $1.3 million. The sellers came back with a counter offer of somewhere between $1.75 and 1.8. The lot was never mentioned in the negotiations. And they ended up at $1.65 mil. "This notion that I got a discount and that Rezko overpaid… is simply not true."

This is getting thicker:::

This is such a small issue compared to the kinds of things Hillary and McCain have done...both have been proven to have taken part in explicit quid pro quo deals. It's still not clear that Rezko got anything from his relationship with Obama, other than indicted.

Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 07:51 AM by mac2
He's a fear monger not a leader to assure the people. They won't even form citizen groups to do civil activities to protect ourselves. We are to be helpless against any invader or attack.

Who the "terrorists" are is a big lie with Congressmen getting up there all the time re-enforcing the myth and lies.

OK so the "terrorists" are who they say they are...why not do real investigations of 911 to learn how we failed to protect ourselves. Everything they've done in Congress has been based on the "big lie" of 911.

Why not impeach this President and VP who failed us Obama?

62. Personally, I think winning the Presidency is a better strategy than
trying to re-write the faulty history of 9/11. Eventually we may learn the reality of what happened, but in the meantime, I would rather someone respectable whose priorities lay with small donors and open government win the Executive branch than fight the 60% of Americans who believe the 9/11 story.

There should be a DU rule against using non-words.

Don't go hiding behind DU rules when you knock Obama every chance you get.

I'll support Hillary if she's the nominee. Will you support Obama if he is?

Cause if you won't, then you'll be the one breaking DU rules, and unlike my joke above, it'll be a tombstone offense.

21. The BIG STORY!!!!!!

Obama Describes Developer Deal as a Mistake

Article Tools Sponsored By
By JEFF ZELENY
Published: March 15, 2008

WASHINGTON — Senator Barack Obama said Friday that he had made repeated lapses of judgment in dealing with an indicted Chicago real estate developer, Antoin Rezko, and acknowledged that Mr. Rezko had raised more money for his political campaigns than he had previously disclosed.

Mr. Rezko, who is on trial on federal corruption charges, had raised as much as $250,000 for Mr. Obama during his first three political races. Previously, Mr. Obama’s campaign estimated that Mr. Rezko had raised about $150,000 for him.

<...>

After previously declining interview requests to talk extensively about Mr. Rezko, the Obama campaign changed its strategy on Friday and talked at length with The Tribune.

Mr. Obama told the newspaper that when he asked Mr. Rezko about reports of his questionable political dealings in 2005 when he bought the house, Mr. Rezko dismissed his concerns. “My instinct was to believe him,” Mr. Obama said.

<...>

Mr. Rezko, who met Mr. Obama in 1991, contributed to his campaign for the Illinois Senate in 1995 and his re-election campaigns. He also raised money for Mr. Obama’s Congressional race in 2000, but not his presidential campaign.

Isn't a big deal!

69. spin this!
Obama estimated a total of $170,000 was raised by Rezko, he said. Could it be more than $170,000, Obama was asked. When pushed, he said it could be as high as $250,000.

“It’s hard for me to know precisely,” Obama said. “I may not know who are friends of his.”

Obama said he would talk to Rezko daily during some of his political campaigns. Obama and his wife Michelle had 'two or three dinners' with indicted businessman Tony Rezko and his wife over the years and made one day trip to the Rezkos' home in Lake Geneva.

Obama agreed to meet with Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune reporters after many months of refusing to answer all the questions about the extent of his friendship with Rezko and the amount of money Rezko raised for him over the years.

Obama said he would talk to Rezko daily during some of his political campaigns.

46. he could face up to 14 years in prison
Assistant U.S. Atty. Christopher Niewoehner had argued a decision on bail shouldn't only be made in the light of Rezko's return. Rezko could decide to flee once he realizes the full weight of the evidence against him and understands he could face up to 14 years in prison, Niewoehner said.

Rezko has significant ties to the Middle East, and his wife and daughter met him in Damascus recently. He has transferred money around the world, Niewoehner said, including $400,000 to Beirut in 2004.

Last night, every time I surfed past that channel, A satellite pic of BO's house,

pics of BO and Rezko hugging, scrolls of $250,000 campaign contribution and on and on

Is this stuff on 24/7 or did something happen? Are the natives feeling buyers remorse.

51. and Clinton is not electable
Remember over 50% of the nation has an unfavorable opinion of her. You don't think the the RW will tear her apart.

Get real.

It is a matter of numbers, hers do not add up.

I guess that we have picked the wrong two candidate.

This is simply called swiftboating, innuendo, and vile spoutings of RW talking points.

If she is the candidate, I will do the same as I have for Obama, work for her, give monetarily, and watch us go down in defeat in Nov. Don't you get it, 4years of Bush, 8 years of Clinton, 8 years of Bush. The country wanted a change and I guess we will get it McCain.

I suspect thats what the people on this posting want anyway.

I suppose the Clintons never visited any of the criminals they've been asociated with. By the way, the Obama column has Rezko in it, the Clinton column has dozens. I agree with the previous poster that it's hard to imagine this is a Democratic site sometime. If this is what Hillary Clinton and her supporters embody, maybe I'll be joining the stay-at-home crowd if you successfully run Obama out of the race.

Facts and evidence don't matter to the Obama crowd. That's not why they like him.

It's okay if Obama has questionable ethics and if his supporters do anything they want. They're saints, they're above question.

It's in Wisconsin, just north of the ILL. Border.

While property there ain't cheap I would hardly equate it to the most luxurious spot in the world.
