Is it normal for a preacher to be yelling at the top of his lungs like that?

I thought it was awfully offputting myself.

I can't imagine going to church every week to listen to that.

Of course I'm not religious so I don't go to church at all.

It's not unusual at all. In fact, some psychologists say that the whole experience of either evangelicals (speaking in tongues or healing or whatever) and Black American churches is akin to mass hypnosis. Because of the yelling and praying and holding your arms out and stamping your feet, you start to "feel" things (endorphin, adrenaline, etc).

However - there are certain traditions that are common and passionate sermonizing in church is one of them.
Hateful ranting is not a tradition, however. Railing at social injustice is.
