Breaking News32 minutes ago: Obama says Rezko played a bigger fundraising role..
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 12:25 AM by ElsewheresDaughter
Senator says friend raised more money than previously known

Source: Chicago Tribune

Indicted Chicago businessman Antoin "Tony" Rezko was a more significant fundraiser for presidential candidate Barack Obama's earlier political campaigns than previously known. Rezko raised as much as $250,000 for the first three offices Obama sought, the senator told the Tribune on Friday.

Obama also said for the first time that his private real estate transactions with Rezko involved repeated lapses of judgment. The mistake, Obama said, was not simply that Rezko was under grand jury investigation at the time of their 2005 and 2006 dealings. "The mistake was he had been a contributor and somebody involved in politics," he said.

In an extensive interview that he hoped would quell the lingering controversy over his relationship with Rezko, Obama said that voters concerned about his judgment should view it as "a mistake in not seeing the potential conflicts of interest."

But he added that voters should also "see somebody who is not engaged in any wrongdoing . . . and who they can trust."

Trying to put his past with Antoin "Tony" Rezko behind him, presidential candidate Barack Obama on Friday said he never thought the now-indicted Chicago businessman would try to take advantage of him because his old friend had never asked for a political favor.

But in a 90-minute interview with Tribune reporters and editors, Obama disclosed that Rezko had raised more for Obama's earlier political campaigns than previously known, gathering as much as $250,000 for the first three offices he sought.

Obama also elaborated on previous statements about his private real estate transactions with Rezko, saying they were not simply mistakes of judgment because Rezko was under grand jury investigation at the time of their 2005 and 2006 dealings. "The mistake, by the way, was not just engaging in a transaction with Tony because he was having legal problems. The mistake was because he was a contributor and somebody who was involved in politics."

The Illinois senator made his most extensive comments about Rezko to date in an effort to quell the lingering controversy over his relationship with the politically influential developer and over the personal financial deals first revealed by the Tribune in November 2006.

Faced with intensifying scrutiny as the Democratic primary season grinds on, Obama said voters should view his Rezko dealings as "a mistake in not seeing the potential conflicts of interest." But he added that voters should also "see somebody who is not engaged in any wrongdoing . . . and who they can trust."

After news reports of Rezko's questionable political dealings first emerged in 2005, Obama said he asked his friend about them. Rezko assured him there was nothing wrong. "My instinct was to believe him," he said.

Asked if he ever thought Rezko would expect something from their relationship, Obama was emphatic: "No. Precisely because I had known him for years and he hadn't asked me for something."

The friendship between the Obamas and Rezkos included occasional dinners and the Obamas once spending a day at the Rezkos' Lake Geneva retreat. It began in about 1991, when Obama became the first black president of the Harvard Law Review and Rezko offered him a job building affordable homes with his Rezmar Corp. Though Obama declined, a friendship and political alliance began.

When Obama launched his bid for the Illinois Senate in 1995, Rezko was his first substantial contributor. Obama said it was his "best guesstimate" that Rezko raised $10,000 to $15,000 of Obama's roughly $100,000 collected for that race. Obama said he didn't have more certainty because he didn't then have the staff to maintain better campaign finance records.

Rezko helped bankroll all of Obama's subsequent campaigns except his presidential bid. Rezko was on Obama's campaign committee in his failed run against U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush and gathered between $50,000 and $75,000 of the estimated $600,000 raised in that race, Obama said.

certainly welcome to it. I seem to remember a pic of the Clintons with this man, also. And some of her contributors have a few skeletons, too. I don't find some lapses of judgment to be a fatal flaw. My first husband turned out to be wife-abusing asshole-who knew? My first impression of him was fine. I thought Senator Clinton's judgment about the war vote was a lapse in judgment, but it won't keep me from voting for her if she wins the nomination.

Hillary Clinton had to trust more than one person/ source
regarding Iraq. Government reports regarding Iraq influenced most Congressional members, it wasn't that she was just listening to Bush. It wasn't a question of Bush alone lying to her at all.

40. Wingnut alert! The above post alludes to long-disproved right-wing lies about the Clintons.
If that were not true, the OP would be able to list the specific crimes these people were supposed to have done with the Clintons. But he can't because the Clintons have never in their public lives been found to have acted unethically. (Although Bill did fib a bit once, to try to save his ass, like any married man would do).

Clinton-haters seem to think it is sufficient to merely type out a list of people's names to convince a jury that the Clintons are guilty of something. Guilt-by-association combined with bearing false witness.

Pretty scummy behavior.

42. Get stuffed.
I'm not a 'wingnut', and the ties of both Clintons to a long long list of very questionable people are a matter of public record. Are you going to deny that, for instance, Denise Rich donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Clinton's presidential library, which was very likely a factor in her husband's receiving a presidential pardon? Something like this is an obvious instance of highly questionable ethics; one doesn't have to be a 'wingnut' to think so. This isn't 'false witness', there are facts behind this. Facts which call into question the judgment and ethics of former President and Senator Clinton. If you happen to think otherwise, I would suggest that you are perhaps blinded by partisanship.

But god forbid someone should criticise the Clintons, even if they make valid points. :eyes:

Blind and unreasoned defence and wilful ignorance of inconvenient facts are far more 'wingnut' than principled criticism.

Jeeze, Obama is being as forthcoming as possible -- including admitting mistakes and providing as much information as he can find.

This compared to the Clintons who have made a career out of NOT answering questions, never admitting a mistake and making excuses for "losing" information.

36. People won't fail to notice the way he keeps having to adjust his
position on Rezko. He is indeed trying to get out in front of the week's news while telling as little as possible. Soon he'll have to give up more information. It'll be the same with Wright. He'll get caught on something else and revise a former statement. It's up to 3 or 4 revisions on Rezko. He's been back and forth on Wright also.

Don't think the Repukes aren't documenting all this.

If they can only get him under oath, we will then be off to the races again.

72. Nice try...Starr: 1998; Hsu: 2007
See the discrepancy in the dates there? The Clintons' political history doesn't end in 1998, and they have some highly ethically questionable relationships with some extremely shady people.

Bringing up Starr in this context seems a lot more like 'reaching', if you ask me.

102. Not a 'parry', a simple fact that's obvious to anyone who's not a moron.
2008 is not 1998. And there are quite a few ethically questionable financial associations on the part of both Clintons over the past decade. (Just as, if not more, questionable than Obama's association with Rezko...more questionable, perhaps, in that there are a lot more of them).

He was not obtrusive. He wasn't one of those people who would insist on coming around all the time or constantly being photographed with me."

Obama views his Rezco dealings as " a mistake in not seeing the potential conflict of interests."
Please. Can he really be that innocent? Rezco had been bankrolling Obama's campaigns for years and Obama never realized that there might be a conflict of interest? One of the first words most people entering politics learn is the implication of conflict of interest.

I wouldn't be too quick to be take pleasure in this though, because on MSNBC when this was being talked about tonight...a political strategist said that Hillary should take caution using this, because she has a long list of donors for her presidential campaign, senate race, and during and surrounding White House, that have been indicted and convicted. They named names too.

I don't take pleasure in either of our candidates being scrutinized like this, because we need to win the General Election. Supreme Court anyone?

Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 04:26 AM by anamandujano
First he claimed he only worked 5 hours for the guy, giving the distinct impression that he hardly knew him. This was during a debate when (I think) Edwards was still there. Sometime after this it came to light that he had known the guy for 17 years, even socialized with the wives.

Then somehow it came to light that Rezko had raised lots of money for his campaigns and he donated it to charity. (This may have happened first.)

Sometime after that, when the house deal was brought up, he admitted "Tony" had done a walk through with him. Of course you already know that Mrs. Rezko bought an expensive lot next door with a ton of money that she didn't really have.

The article in the OP is the fourth time he has revised his story to include more about his relationship or money he received from Rezko.

There is a good web site if you want to follow all the detail.

Rezko-arama III

March 14, 2008 7:09 PM

A Friday night document dump, of sorts. Minutes after the Huffington Post published his condemnation of extreme remarks made by his spiritual leader (see below), Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has given an interview to the Chicago Tribune (HERE) in which he acknowledges that recently-indicted real estate dealer and political patron Tony Rezko played a bigger role in his fundraising than he'd previously acknowledged.

"The mistake was he had been a contributor and somebody involved in politics," Obama said. Voters, he said, should view it as "a mistake in not seeing the potential conflicts of interest" while also "see somebody who is not engaged in any wrongdoing ... and who they can trust."

Again, the Obama campaign seems to handle these things by closing their eyes, holding their breath, and hoping a starstruck media will leave it at that.
