Bush comes here on Tues., It's going to be a hostile environment
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 05:25 PM by MessiahRp
For those of you that didn't know, Dubya is coming to Appleton, WI on Tuesday and is expecting to talk to a packed house at the 2,100 seat Performing Arts Center.

I'm not sure if it will be a fundraiser (lets hope its not), but there is a good chance that we may create an equal force on the outside of the PAC (ironic the initials of that isn't it?).

Right now we have heard that we may have over 500 (or more) protestors there that cover all sorts of different groups like the Sierra Club, Center for Peace and Justice, and a lot of John Kerry supporters like myself plan to be there to demonstrate.

He is going to talk about job creation here but there is a definite hot spot with residents here about that. Since Bush took office the Appleton-Oshkosh area alone has lost 14,000 manufacturing jobs and other neighboring areas have been very hard hit as well.

I know that Secret Service and the Bush crew is using their regular forms of eliminating democracy by pushing protesters as far away from the President as possible and the Appleton Police have mentioned that they are not to let us anywhere near his appearance, but if we continue to get people in the area interested in protesting his appearance, we could easily match the number of people Bush will actually be speaking to.

My personal opinion as someone who has been an Area Coordinator for John Kerry's Wisconsin campaign here is He Came to the Wrong Town.

People are fed up with the lies, they're tired of the ridiculous "Feed the Rich" economic policies and "Kill our troops for oil" Foreign Policies.

If you can make it up here, this is a wonderful opportunity to shout at the man who essentially epitomizes everything that is wrong with our country today. It may not be worth as much as voting him out in November is, but it is certainly a much needed and well earned release for many of us who have been assailed by this extremist.

Tuesday will be a wonderful day for Democracy, whether or not Bush likes the concept.

1. Go Appleton and Oshkosh and Neenah and Menasha.
I have a dizzying array of relatives up in Neenah and Menasha. I'll try and forward them to you, but there are probably more than a few Republicans in the mix. Although maybe not anymore. Good luck.

2. Protestors are kept away from Dubya, so that he rarely, if ever, sees them
This is a disgrace in a democracy--or what remains of ours.

We must stand up, fight back and begin to reclaim our democracy from these inept, corrupt thugs.

Let's hear it for those willing to take time out in Appleton, Wisconsin, and show your unhappiness with the direction Bush has taken the country. Here's hoping you have a huge turnout that the feckless media can no longer ignore.

3. More info on events
I found info on the Sierra Club's gathering and a Job group's gathering for the event. I will post Peace and Justice Center info here when I get it for those who choose the Iraq War as their protesting voice. I am not sure what one I will pick since I support everything that is gathering against Bush Tuesday (Kerry Supporters, Sierra Club, Peace Center, Workers Groups)...

Please join your Sierra Club friends in front of the Radisson Hotel at 10:00 a.m. Dress for standing outdoors. Please RSVP by Replying to All on this email. Sierra Club will hold a peaceful educational rally to tell the Bush Administration their environmental policies don't work in Wisconsin. Please bring a cardboard sign with your own short message, for example Clean Air = Safe Fish; Another Voter for Clean Air & Water.

5. Want attention for your protest? Picket and block the driveways of the
local t v stations. That will get you attention. Better yet, blockade a major freeway or highway.

6. Blockading freeways and major highways...
is kinda stupid. That just pisses off a lot of ordinary people and there is also the possibility that it will cause problems for emergency vehicles.

I do like the idea of blocking driveways of TV stations though. That would force the TV outlets to take notice, plus it doesn't really cause any problems for people.

7. I have heard...
that a few idiots go around with signs whenever Kerry speaks somewhere. The turnout is usually quite dismal -- no more than 30 or 40 people, at most.

So, either way I wish ya the best of luck. I hope the protests get some attention as well -- I do think it's important for the admin. and the media to realize that more people are opposed to these thugs than support him.

9. You mean Bush Supporters
following Kerry? I'm sure there is I think it probably works both ways but in general we Dems have been a whole hell of a lot more active and energized in working against this President from the moment we talked up the Iraq Invasion, so I'm sure our protest turnouts trump theirs every time out. :)

I'm thinking we could have a huge turnout... the only group I haven't seen any activities from myself yet is the GLBT community and with the HRC and Action Wisconsin, you'd think they'd want representation at this type of event.

10. ....talk to a packed house
...packed with "selected" attendees, by invitation only --- dissidents need not attend, protestors will be corraled and gagged with the flag

11. From the event's organizer:
Ronna Swift, Fox Valley Peace Coalition [email protected] cell 920-205-2589 home 920-733-8394
I will be wearing a large car coat length grape colored rain type parka and be around Houdini Plaza...

PEOPLE WILL START GATHERING BETWEEN 9 AND 10 on the east end of College Avenue in downtown Appleton -
by Houdini Plaza and the Paper Valley Hotel (neighboring block and across the street from the PAC)
Try to stop at Appleton and College at Houdini Square under the clock to meet local peace people and get updates. Then go toward the PAC.

Try to have designated media people with something positive to say. Thank the media for covering the rally. We have already been on channel 26 and 11 and in the Post Crescent.
Have a mission statement or handout with accurate statistics if possible.

GUIDELINES
1. The group leader should try to contact a member of the Fox Valley Peace Coalition by the clock and get Captain Helein's information and guidelines. Appleton Police non-emergency number is 832-5500.
2. The group leader should try to connect with Captain Helein. The group should remove disruptive individuals to ensure the protests legality.
3. Picket signs should not be constructed from materials which can be construed as offensive weapons, i.e., baseball bats, 2 by 4's supporting signs, baseball bats, pipes, etc.
4. SIGNS CAN NOT BE PUT ON LIGHT POLES, ELECTRIC POLES, ETC.
5. Residential picketing is banned.

Radisson Paper Valley Hotel and west if possible will be the big area. This is across the street from the PAC and in the very next block to the east.

I am billing this as middle America exercising its right to show concern, in a peaceful and respectful manner, about the direction of the country under the present administration.

Latest word on 10 PM television is an arrival at 11:10, speech, and fly out at 12:40.
Go to the downtown mall if you need to get warm, need bathrooms, etc. There is a bathroom in the basement of the mall under City Hall and the Children's Museum. We could gather inside the mall afterwards to share notes, etc. This is NOT a shopping mall to any extent.
There are a number of sub, deli, places to eat in the downtown area.

I am working tomorrow and will check my cell phone about 12. I will activate it after work at 4:30 and prefer you leave a message on my answering machine at home if possible.
I will be downtown around 9 on Tuesday and bundled for the weather.

1. from the SOUTH If you are coming up 41 you can take by pass 441 east and get off at Oneida Street and take that all the way downtown. You will go past St. Elizabeth's Hospital and then go over the high Oneida Street bridge. Trinity Church will be on your right and to the north will be the Soldier's Square parking ramp. There is also a parking ramp 1 block north of there and north of College Avenue. The street curves around by the YMCA. If you have to go north of College turn left at the first possible street, Washington Street, and the ramp is on the right. Walk to College and head west. When you are at the end of the downtown 2 block small mall, look on the SE corner of Appleton and College and there is a tall black pole with an old clock. Try to connect with som! eone from the Fox Valley Peace Coalition for updates. This is Houdini Plaza where the Fox Valley Peace Coalition gathers every Saturday from 11-12. Head west on College toward the Paper Valley Hotel, now called the Radisson. The PAC, or Performing Arts Center, is in the following block

2. from the NORTH get on highway 441 off 41 north of Appleton and take the College Avenue exit to the right (east). Come toward town and when you go over the College Avenue Bridge you will go past Lawrence University. Turn right on Morrison (end of second block of downtown) and then left on Washington and you will find a parking ramp. This is next to the bus depot. Park and walk to College Avenue headed west. Find clock at Houdini Plaza across from City Hall which is the west end of the 2 block small mall, corner of Appleton and College. Fox Valley Peace Coalition gathers under the clock. try to find someone from the group and get information. Head west on College to the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel.

3. If you come to town from the WEST, come in on Wisconsin Avenue and head downtown on Oneida Street. You will probably be diverted at some point to the east. Find the parking ramps by the downtown mall. One is north of College Avenue 1 block and runs east/west on Washington Street. It is next to the bus depot and near the library.

4. from the EAST come in on College Avenue and repeat the north directions

Peace,
Ronna
