Why don't you just call him the Antichrist and get it over with??
I see more hysterical threads on "He has too much POWER..." "He's all charisma, it ain't natural.." "He's a CULT figure..."

The idea that 10 million people and I would be fooled by a guy simply slinging some huckster/carpetbagger/fake-messiah bullshit is really he last gasps of a dying campaign.....

So instead of dancing around the issue, Clintonistas, why don't you just say what you mean, and get it over with.

It's the only excuse Clinton has left:

"The Devil took my election away from me...."

8. Democrats aren't used to charisma these days. They don't know what to do with it.
For the last 30 years we've only ever seen fireballs like Mondale and Dukakis; we now assume tedious wonkiness is a prerequisite for higher office. A candidate who can't put you to sleep with a thirty-point policy statement must lack presidential timber. So a guy comes along who understands and uses Lakoff's theory of framing (which states that people vote mostly on the basis of their emotions rather than on the basis of specific policies -- something the Republicans figured out years ago), and the old-school DLC wonkophiles conclude he's some kind of sinister cult leader. In fact, he's just a very, very smart campaigner.

9. Some righties already are
be prepared for the Anti Christ smear in the GE. I heard it third hand that a Pastor was concerned about him being the anti Christ, look it up in the bible, blah blah blah. I told the person that was scary, and she agreed, then I followed up with, "a pastor that is supposed to teach the life of Jesus, is using hate and fear, that is scary!" Made her think!

I hear this is one of the only places left of all the dem sites on the net where this is being allowed. Three more days and hopefully the moderators will stop this.

18. yes, people are never fooled by good speeches
wait, have you ever read a history book? I am not going to make a comparison here, but the long list of people who have ridden the ability to give a great speech to power is really pretty long, on both the left and the right, both for good and for evil.

"I serve as a blank screen, on which people of vastly different political stripes project their own views." you remember that from his autobiography, right? or did he not actually write his own book?

Obama is hardly the antichrist (although he could be, but since such a thing doesn't exist, blaming the devil is meaningless, you might as well blame Leprechauns) It is perfectly reasonable to look at history and be concerned about a candidate that offers little but a vague notion of hope and great speeches that leave you empty when you actually read them, not listen to them. Will he be a perfectly adequate President? most likely, but I have to tell you, two of our last four Presidents have been 'big picture' change agents (Reagan, Bush II) that system leads to failure of government, as we have seen. The President is not a figurehead, like the French President, given to making speeches, he/she is actually the CEO of the world's largest organization, it is, as we like to mock Bush about, hard fucking work, you need to be able to get your hands dirty with details, delegating that leads to abuses and failure.

39. i've given up talking to them
Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 03:56 PM by northzax
it's too much to ask to expect a manager as President, people want a 'change agent' it's really remarkable, Obama has laid out in his writings what is going to happen if he gets elected, people are going to be very surprised, I think, to learn that he is a moderate, who will govern by cutting legislative deals with the GOP to seem to make accomplishments, while his erstwhile supporters learn the taste of disappointment when they find out that he's not what they thought they were.

he's not what I hear people say he is, he isn't pretending, he is being upfront and honest about it, when he has to, and people just don't want to hear it. hold on for the ride, the netroots are going to get ugly as shit come the end of his first 100 days.

people want this to be exciting. guess what? 99.99% of government is boring to all but the very few intimately involved in that particular issue. Tax policy is boring. Housing policy is boring. human resources is boring. heck, even most military stuff and foreign policy stuff is boring. (and I am a policy wonk, I live and breathe the stuff a lot of the time, but I can see the glaze that comes over other people's eyes when I talk about it) even making policy is boring, 99% of senate votes are boring to 99% of people. Good government is something you don't need to think about unless you are involved. Good government is having the streets paved, the garbage picked up, the water coming out of the tap, and the lights turned on. When's the last time you thought about your electric company? probably when you pay the bill or when the lights go out. I don't want an electric company that I have to think about, I want to flip the switch and have the lights come on.

democratic government is a full contact sport, but it shouldn't be something that people have to worry about on a daily basis. or even think about. I want to elect good people who care about government to positions of power and trust them to make day to day decisions on the 99% of stuff that I don't particularly want to care about. it's called representative government for a reason, we elect people to both exercise power and to oversee those who do exercise power. that's the whole point.

37. It's pretty sad
to see Democrats getting all bent out of shape because we have a candidate with charisma, a candidate who is inspiring people, many of whom didn't bother to vote before. We have a candidate who is bringing in new voters by the droves, boosting turnout to record numbers and getting people inspired and hopeful for the future.

I've been here for four years listening to my fellow Democrats bemoaning the fact that people didn't get involved, that people were too bitter over politics to be inspired, that too many young people and minorities don't bother to get involved. Now things are changing for the better but Democrats on DU are raging against it?? :wtf: It's a pretty lame way to support their candidate if you ask me.

40. What great things has Obama achieved in his life concerning civil rights?
All, I have seen so far of him; is he joined a black church that supports the black nationalism movement. That same black nationalism movements leader (Farrakhan a cult like figure) is the inventor of the -- million man march -- in Washington; but that is not a civil rights achievement, in my mind.

Large nationalistic cult groups have been known to be dangerous in the past. Why has that changed with Obama's ties with the Black Nationalism movement?

Where has Obama ever picketed (protested) to take action for the common people?
