1. I would imagine different people of Hispanic descent would feel
a multitude of ways, depending.

(in other words, that question needs to be reworded, cause IMO it doesn't make you look very good)

8. To tell you the truth I don't even know what they mean when they say
"Hispanic vote in Texas".

I imagine that is majority Mexican-American, but I couldn't say for sure.

3. Most of them had to come here because of it...
I figure most people would like to stay in their country of origin if they could earn a decent living.

NAFTA was a promise not delivered on for Mexicans.

9. You certainly are rude.
I had an honest question about how those people in Texas who are classified in polls as "Hispanic" feel about NAFTA.

Don't blame me for the grouping, blame the pollsters.

11. Hey! What do the Italians think about Budweiser?
I'll tell you what I think. I think there is nothing better on a hot day than a cool refreshing budweiser. It's the king of beers.

I like to get a case and take it outside when i barbecue.

12. NAFTA = corn prices
Edited on Sat Mar-01-08 02:14 AM by izquierdista
There are quite a few Mexicans who are steamed about the price of tortillas. First, the US dumps excess corn on the market at $2 a bushel, making it impossible for the typical Mexican farmer to make any money. So he packs his things up and joins a couple buds on the trip north. Suppose he makes it to a construction job in Las Vegas or a meat packing plant in Nebraska. At least he can make money and send some back to his family, which now, he doesn't get to see unless he wants to try to re-cross the border. So now he lives in a shabby flop in an expensive country, where he has to play it safe not to get caught. So in the first round, no, NAFTA has been a kick in the ass for him.

But now comes round two! Americans decide to quit dumping corn and build big fermentation tanks so they can make ethanol to put in their gas tank. Up, up, up goes the price of corn and now his family needs him to send MORE money to make ends meet. It's not like he can jump in the pickup, run 1500 miles, plant a corn crop and hurry, run back to his minimum wage job in Nebraska. No, he gets a second kick in the ass for leaving his village in the first place. Just about the time he was breaking even on paying for the crossing the first time and starting to get ahead, NAFTA slaps him down again.

It's great when trade policy and the search for cheaper labor to exploit intersect! A classic bait-and-switch!

13. A lot of them are in the US because of NAFTA
Whatever problems NAFTA caused for American factory workers pale in comparison to the ruin it has brought to Mexican farmers.
