What will a Democrat in the White House mean for your community?
I live in West Philly. As I type this, I'm watching a police helicopter circle my neighborhood, illuminating the buildings below, looking for someone.

I'm sure I heard an ambulance a little while ago.

What does this mean? Most likely that a young man (probably black) has been shot and that another young man (probably black) will soon be going to prison.

This scene is played out often in my neighborhood; Republican control has hit my community hard.

Watching this play out tonight reminded me just how badly my community NEEDS a Democrat in the White House. We NEED better schools. We NEED better healthcare. We NEED someone to care about us.

Fellow DUers, what will a Democrat in the White House mean for your community?

1. Lower beer prices!
:-)

We need to contribute generously to Obama's campaign so that he can use that money to help bring lots of Democrats on his coat tails into Congress.

3. Hope.
That Americans can once again be proud of their country after eight years of mismanagement and deceit.

4. Honestly? Not much
I live in a tiny hamlet in Northern Vermont. I can't think of anything that a dem president would mean except relief that the repukes are out. We have pretty good access to healthcare though VHAP and Catamount Health and there is virtually no crime here. The local schools are good. Anyway, it's going to take years to do anything about health care reform.

6. I really wish my community were so lucky. So much is riding on this election...
for my community. Seriously. It has gotten bad. The hopelessness is almost palpable.

13. Yes. That will be extremely important for Philadelphia as well.
Thanks for bringing it up.

And, along a similar line, hopefully we can get something done about our abysmal mental health policies.

16. So here's another Reagan beef
when he was Governor of California there were massive cuts in mental health services. Any wonder why we have a homelessness problem in San Francisco? I guess he thought it would be the welfare queens.

8. If it's Obama?
It will probably mean Donnie "homophobe" McClurkin sleeping in the lincoln bedroom. An increase in SS taxes that will probably be spent bombing Pakistan, and no health care coverage. Oh, and also fun watching him "work with" rethugs to make all that happen.

11. god i'm glad that this primary season hasn't driven me around the bend
too bad for you, it's like a brain worm. You have completely lost it. Either that are were already around the bend when it started. Bizarre. Hate is definitely corrosive and it sure can make people ugly. Like you.

12. Yeah. I had to hold myself back from replying to that post.
Such posts no longer make me mad. Now they just make me sad for the poster.

I used to bite, but at this point I think that I've feasted on all of the negativity that I can take.

15. the statue of st ronald of reagan will weep
and thousands of heart broken republicans will flock to see the "weeping statue of st ronald". there will be shuttle buses from the walmart parking lot taking the pilgrims to the holy sites where saint ronald once lived, went to school, and save souls with his "laying on hands". there will be mass baptism in the rock river at the site where he saved 70+ swimmers, yes even at a young age, st ronald saved the drowning- praise be st ronald for their deliverance!

an economic boom this city has`t seen in years

you asked did`t you?

17. Personal question, sorry to step on your thread but......
If you live in Philly why do you use the old english D as your avatar?

I think you and I are the only ones who use it and I want it all to myself.

18. I'm originally from Detroit...
Edited on Wed Feb-27-08 10:59 PM by Kristi1696
...and am a rabid Tigers fan.

I just switched my avatar from the mitten to the D in honor of spring training starting this week.

As much as I want a Democrat for Philly, I want one for Detroit even more. I love that freaking town.

ETA: BTW, I've seen a couple of other posters use it.

I am still in Detroit (North East corner, or close to it) and I thought I was the only one with this avatar until I saw yours pop up a few days ago. Scrolling down a list of posts I saw the D and thought it was my post, confused me for a second.

Anyways, thanks for answering me, on this the day the Tigers played the first exhibition game of the season.

20. If Obama wins, no more foreign wars for special interests groups.
The war that Hillary Clinton voted for and the NAFTA trade deal that Bill Clinton passed and signed into law have done so much harm to our country. If Obama wins, we will finally see the light at the end of this very dark tunnel.
