Daily U.S. Casualties 3/22/2004

As of Sunday, 572 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq a year ago, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 388 died as a result of hostile action and 184 died of nonhostile causes, the department said.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, five; Ukraine, three; Thailand, two; Denmark, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.

Since the start of military operations, 2,868 U.S. service members have been injured as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department. Nonhostile injured numbered 432.

The latest deaths reported by the military:


A Marine was killed in an attack Friday in Anbar province, west of Baghdad.


A 1st Infantry Division soldier was fatally electrocuted while working on communication equipment at a military base in Baqouba, north of Baghdad.


Two soldiers died Saturday

from a rocket attack near Fallujah, west of Baghdad.


A 1st Infantry Division soldier was killed Sunday in an apparent accident during a weapons firing exercise in Samarra, about 60 miles north of Baghdad.

The latest identifications reported by the military:


Spec. Doron Chan, 20, Highland, N.Y.; died Thursday near Balad, Iraq, in a vehicle accident; assigned to the Army Reserve's 411th Engineer Brigade, New Windsor, N.Y.
