Surviving a prisoner of war camp makes a man a hero but it doesn't neccessarily make him a good human being.

It's true.

Look at some of the leaders of the Chinese Revolution, the Bolshevik Revolution, people involved in the French Revolution and some involved in reich wing groups in South America.

They endured serious hardships in labor camps, re-education camps, gulags, etc.
But some of them were horrible people.
