Hillary's Miscalculation: "It'll be over by Feb. 5th"
Edited on Sun Feb-17-08 10:24 PM by fedupinBushcountry

Hillary's miscalculation

Tim Russert recalled the quote this morning, and a reader found the clip:

At the very end of the segment from "This Week" on Dec. 30, Clinton says she's in it for the long run, then adds:

"It's not a very long run. It'll be over by Feb. 5."

She wasn't the only one who was wrong, of course, but Obama aides David Plouffe and Steve Hildebrand get a lot of credit for arguing, early, that it wouldn't be over by Feb. 5.

In that interview (around the 6:00 mark) Clinton also seems to have overstated her Super Tuesday operation.

"I have a campaign that is poised and ready for the long term. We are competing everywhere through Feb. 5," she said. "We have built organizations in many states. We have staff in many states."

The interview, from about seven weeks ago, feels like it's from another era.

I hope Obama wins, but I don't think he has it locked up yet.

At least she is showing up...finally she learns what Howard Dean has been trying to teach.

Obama won Super Tuesday by breaking even .... Hillary lost by
getting a tie.

7. "the arrogance of high expectations"
the arrogance of high expectations

So, for top Clinton aide Harold Ickes, primary and caucus victories are a key indicator of general-election performance. For top Clinton aide Mark Penn, primary and caucus victories have absolutely nothing to do with general-election performance.

This isn’t helpful. Do you ever get the sense that Penn sometimes does more harm than good?

And speaking of Ickes, he’ll need to work on this spin, too.

link

Ickes' Law:

Of his wife's recent travails, he said, "the caucuses aren't good for her. They disproportionately favor upper-income voters who, who, don't really need a president but feel like they need a change."

"Clinton aides and donors say the candidate herself never expected Obama to be so competitive"

13. Doesn't sound like she was ready of course technically speaking it wasn't
Day One

Hillary put all of her eggs into Feb 5th. Afterwards she was flat broke.

Not ready for a full campaign

Not ready with a coherent winning message

Not ready with a plan on what to do with Bill

Not ready on the IWR

Not ready on how to explain your mistake on the IWR

Not ready to be competitive in caucuses.

But the day before she puts her hand on the bible she is going to get it all together and be ready for day one - now that is a fairly tale.

Never has a campaign whose theme is competence been run so poorly.

37. LOL
Let me guess, he woke up one morning and found that he was on the ballot even though he never expected this to happen?

Or alternatively, Hillary Clinton felt she wasn't spending enough money so she decided to throw him some contests so she'd look like more of a winner in the end?

There's a big difference between changing your mind and being overtaken by events.

19. It is worth sitting through this YouTube just to hear
"It's not a very long run. It'll be over by Feb. 5."

at the end. Very cocky and blow-off-ish.

Indeed, it does feel like it was from another era.

I don't think she can recover from losing 10 straight primaries/caucuses.

That's 20% of the country.

She also way underestimated the hatred for her on the left.
I think the latter is somewhat forgivable. The former should have been a given.

28. My G-d, everyone should watch that video.
"We are competing everywhere through February 5th."

"It's not a very long run. It'll be over by February 5th."

And she's VERY confident in closing the segment with that statement.

Plus she said she would win red states and had the organization to win red states.

We know how well that turned out.

***Sigh***
