Poll question: THE Question: Is America ready for a black president?
THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is the question which we keep asking ourselves when we talk or think about Barack Obama. Do you think Barack Obama will be able to pick up a majority of electoral votes and a plurality or better of popular votes? I ask because as we know, race is still a factor in American life

Yes, America is ready for a black President.

What an asinine question. It is NOT the question we keep asking ourselves.
Only racists keep asking themselves that question.

ent, which is too bad, because personally, I'm ready for either one. I think the perspective of those who are members of traditional minority groups adds to character.

32. I'm not voting
But I do have an opinion.

I think that a lot of the US is ready for a black president. Just like I think that a lot of America is ready for a woman president.

The real question is, is ENOUGH of America ready for a black or woman president.

From the people I know personally, I'd say no to both. I live in the bluest state in the country (sorry Vermont and Ma but RI has got you beat.) Bush the lesser has a 14% approval rating in my state.

If the people who do not base their decisions on whether or not someone has too much pigment or external genitalia get to the polls - well then yes, America is ready.

However, that said, I think the D's will lose the entire south if Obama is the nominee and all of the south with the exception of Arkansas if Clinton is the nominee. So how do we make sure we get all of the northeast and the midwest and all of the west coast? The southwest, with Mccain as the nominee is going to be tough. I think Clinton takes the Southwest and Obama loses it.

The swing states are going to be the states all along the old Mason Dixon line. PA, MD, DE and as far west as Ohio. PA and Ohio are going to decide the 2008 general and it will be interesting to see how they go in the primaries.

34. Not sure Ohio is ready
I live in Cincinnati, and I can only tell you what I am hearing in my circle of friends/co-workers, and that is very few are ready for a black president. The feeling is blacks will vote for Obama just for the reason he is black. And many whites will not vote for Obama just for the reason he is black. And his affiliation with what is considered a black-separatist church does not help. I am torn as I think both Obama and Hillary are strong candidates. Regardless of who get the nomination, I will vote for the Democratic candidate.

46. The answer, unfortunately, is no. For every person who will vote for Obama
only because he is a black man there are 2 who will vote against him for the same reason. A lot of DUers fail to realize we are a small microcosm of the Democratic party and an even far smaller representational of the electorate in general. It won't give me any pleasure to say "I told you so" in November.
