Do you really think Obama or Clinton will lose to McCain?
Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 04:45 PM by Kerry2008
Honestly?

Barack Obama is a talented and inspirational speaker. He has an ability to motivate people, and presents the case for hope and change that we haven't seen effectively presented since Bill Clinton entered onto the political stage in 1992. What he lacks in substance, he makes up for in style. And I'm sure if he's the nominee, his campaign will put more emphasis on his solutions for tackling America's biggest problems. And matched up against McCain, he's got him beat.

Hillary Clinton has the experience, the political machine, the toughness, the name value, and the money to compete against McCain. She, like McCain, can debate the issues and I think she'll out debate McCain at every step of the way. She has an absolute comfortability with talking about the issues, and she offers real solutions and specifics to all the issues facing us. After seven years of George W. Bush, the American people would certainly be ready to replace a Bush with a Clinton any day of the week. And matched up against McCain, she's got him beat.

I hate watching people here on DU claim Hillary or Obama would lose to McCain.

I don't believe that for a second. Debate whose more electable, whose better on the issues, whose going to bring in more people to the big tent that is the Democratic party, etc.

But don't eat your own. Especially when you might have to support the person you're saying will lose in November to John McCain. They won't lose to the 100 year war flip-flopping Senator from Arizona.

Bank on it.

1. No
I think either candidate would be strongly favored in November, even against McCain.

I do think a Clinton vs. McCain matchup may be much closer than an Obama/McCain matchup -- say, I could see Hillary winning a 51-48 victory as opposed to a greater than 5% win. But who knows? I think that McCain's a fairly weak general election candidate, and I don't think he'll wear well during the course of the campaign.

Moreover, I think either candidate will prove appealing to the electorate, and I think both would make good presidents.

amongst other things McCain has no fire what so ever. No inspiration. That is important in a POTUS race you have to talk about where we are going. McCain is going to be dancing trying to keep the base (plausible electibility) and supposedly draw people into something that a vast majority doesn't want anymore.

7. He can't even unite his party, how's he going to win?
I think Clinton or Obama would beat him by a good margin.

8. Both can crush McCain.
Just wait for the cycle of anti-McCain ads, featuring such time-loved quotes as:

" I hate gooks...I'll always hate them."

"Americans don't care if we're in Iraq for 100 years, or even 1,000."

"There's gonna be more wars..."

"Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran..."

And let's not even start with the fact that he's Bob Dole minus the charm and charisma...

11. No. neither would - in a clean election. I am afraid Obama wouldn't fight for us though
if counting dirty tricks ensue. He doesn't seem to be so much into voters - or fighting - for that matter.

12. Actually, I think it might depend on the running mates
That's why a possible McCain-Huckabee ticket is pretty scary.

13. Going on anecdotal evidence and the early head-to-head polls, but Obama has better chance to win
First, there are plenty of people who are not yet engaged in the presidential elections yet - they're not following the primaries, don't really know who's running vs. dropped out, etc.

Of those that are following the race that I've spoken with, many are distrustful of Clinton, even if they agree with her on issues. I know people who have narrowed down their choice to Obama or McCain, because they don't have that level of distrust with them.

Many also like Obama's hopeful message. While differing on issues with him, people wonder how great would it be to have a candidate who could win handily, like we haven't seen in quite awhile (I think Reagan won 49 of 50 states one time, which now seems unthinkable given the division in the country). I'm not saying Obama would do that (49 of 50), but all signs point to him having a better chance of having a big win than Clinton, who seems to have a built-in, hard-core percentage of folks who don't like her at all.

14. Hillary without a shred of doubt...Obama maybe...
I think either of our candidates has an uphill battle against McCain. I just think Hillary has zero chance. Once she's the nominee then the media just clicks into "McCain is a personable, free thinking maverick/Hillary Clinton is a manipulative, overly emotional calculating shrew" mode that they've cultivated for 15 years.

Obama will have a tough time of it as well but at least he stands the outside chancing of winning people over. Right or wrong, every single person in america knows how they feel about Hillary and nothing is going to change their mind. And if she campaigns in the GE like she has in the primary if anything she'll lose voters.

17. Hillary will get smoked and hurt us downballot - Obama's got a shot.
I agree with you.

If Hillary is the nominee you will see swing state and tight election Dems running away from her in droves. She's poison.

15. You'll get LOTS of arguments, but you know what? I agree with you. Furthermore, anyone who
posts on DU that they'd vote for a Republican candidate instead of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton clearly doesn't belong here.

I will remain a registered independent, but I WILL vote for the Democratic candidate in November.

Yes I think McCain can win. Especially against Hillary's wishy-washy war stance and health care mandates.

Due to his glorious administration the Republicans have all the allure of a turd in a salad.
