Log Cabin Republicans may endorse Kerry
The director of that group was on "Inside Politics" and said that Bush's support for an amendment to ban gay marriage has jeopardized their support of him. In 2000 exit polls showed that 1 million homosexuals voted for Shrub.

1. That would be incredible
Did he actually say they may endorse Kerry, or are they just not going to endorse Bush?

9. Kerry wins either way
If the log cabin Republicans pledge simply to "not support Bush" is a win-win situation.

Either they vote for Kerry or don't vote at all-that's a little over what a million did you say? lost votes for Bush no matter how you look at it.

(Of course I'd prefer they actually voted for Kerry just to make his victory that much more harsh)

Better yet wouldn't it be great if it was because of their vote that Kerry wins? I dunno I envision people being shocked that it was because of a group of "Repubublicans" that Bush loses.

4. This is exciting stuff.
1,000,000 gay voters voted for Bush in 2000, hopefully this changes their tune.

5. I don't believe for a second
that one million gay voters voted for Bush.

The LCR is a little loose with their numbers.

24. yes, I know they claim that
but I'd like to see the exit polling data. I want to know how they asked the question, where it was asked, and what assumptions they made when extrapolating the 1 million number.

10. A republican who stays home and does not vote is as good as a Kerry vote
The LCR have started running adds of Cheney saying that he thinks it is a states rights issue. Sounds like they are pretty pissed off about this.

12. Strictly speaking, it's only half as good.

But certainly these LCR ads are a good thing, and even better is all the media attention they are getting.

15. Bush sucks. But Kerry inhaling a bit too.
I hope the LCRs just stay home, but I won't encourage any gay conservatives to vote for Kerry. He opposes gay marriage, probably for chickenshit political concerns more than any deeply-held belief, but says he approves of civil unions. Separate but equal lives on.

16. Hello Militia - Welcome to DU!!!! GWB is anti-gay, JK is not anti-gay
Bush supports nothing for gays but bigotry.

From John Kerry's position, it is but a hop skip and a jump to gay marriage. From GWBs position, it is a trip to the moon. . . . .

<snip>

Protecting Gay and Lesbian Families

John Kerry believes that same-sex couples should be granted rights, including access to pensions, health insurance, family medical leave, bereavement leave, hospital visitation, survivor benefits, and other basic legal protections that all families and children need.  He has supported legislation to provide domestic partners of federal employees the benefits available to spouses of federal employees.  He was one of 14 Senators -- and the only one up for reelection in 1996 -- to oppose the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Support for Civil Unions

John Kerry supports same-sex civil unions so that gay couples can benefit from the health benefits, inheritance rights, or Social Security survivor benefits guaranteed for heterosexual couples.

17. Thanks for the kick
but I don't think the fact that you personally don't plan to lobby gay conservatives to vote for Kerry will be a very big factor in the election. :hi:

19. Right!
In the Veep debate in 2000, between Cheney & Lieberman, Cheney said everyone was entitled to a private life, & it should be a state's issue.

He clearly was against an Amendment, & now the LCR is using that debate in their ads.

Dana Carvey as Church Lady standing outside polling places offering recent voters their choice of snacks: a hot dog or a taco (one of the best skits on that show, with Chris Kattan as Ann Heche) ;-)

25. Never happen? ......here it is!
GAY REPUBLICANS START ANTI-BUSH CAMPAIGN: In a dramatic break with President Bush, a prominent group of gay Republicans who supported him four years ago is launching a $1 million advertising campaign today attacking the administration for trying to ban same-sex marriage.

Bush's decision to endorse a constitutional amendment barring same-sex marriage was "the line in the sand" for the 27-year-old group, which has never run a campaign ad, said Executive Director Patrick Guerriero.

He said he had warned the White House as Bush edged toward supporting an amendment that "despite our historic loyalty to the party and the president, we would be forced to speak out if gay and lesbian families were going to be used as wedge issues in swing states."
---------end quote

Maybe not an endorcement..BUT I'll take this as a defection of 1 million gays!

A vote for * by members of the GLB community is ALMOST equivalent to a Jewish vote for nazis.

28. This will NEVER happen . . . I repeat, this will NEVER happen
This group of gay Republicans will ultimately prove to be just as spineless as the pro-choice Republican organizations. At the end of the day, they'll keep their mouths shut. Why? Because they're REPUBLCANS who just happen to be gay, not the other way around. And they know that if they endorse Kerry, they're signing their political death warrant. Republican officials will stop returning their calls. And if Bush actually manages to get reelected, there will be payback -- big time.

I think it's conceivable that they may withhold their endorsement of Bush, but there's no way the organization will formally endorse Kerry.
