What an Obama supporter said to me today about Edwards
"I considered Edwards at first but he is a preppy boy like Bush in that respect! he's way too affluent to be representing the "everyman" for my liking, wants to say what people want to hear and talk is cheap. Yes I know he has a good lawyer track record of suing corporations, it's gonna take more than that and working with corporations too to pull us out of recession and improve the job market/economy."

14. Obama did not grow up well to do
and he attended Punahao on a scholarship. Looks like you're not much more informed about Obama than the Obama supporter the OP is referring to.

21. Obama was eventually by definition a prep
Edwards never was. Edwards did not have enough money to go to Duke law school so he went to a state school instead.

32. nominally.
He didn't grow up in any kind of privileged environment. Attending Harvard Law doesn't make him a preppy, though I guess you could argue that attending Punahao did, even if he was on scholarship.

38. I don't disagree with any of that
And he did climb from food stamps to where he is now. His story is very similar to John's, although Obama has never been perceive in the same light while many think of Edwards the way the person in the OP's story does.

Methinks some Obama supporter guzzelled some serious Kool-aid. Maybe they just mainlined it.

46. Methinks you're talking out of your.....
way to hedge what you said. Yes, Obama was so fucking smart that he got a scholarship to the best prep school in the Islands. He got scholarships and loans that enabled him to attend Columbia and Harvard Law. He does not come from a privilged background. Period. In fact, at one time, his family was on food stamps. "Educational privilge" is something that Obama fought for and earned. It wasn't handed to him. duh.

15. so, if you attend a state supported uni. rather than Harvard
you're more "preppy"? And if you built your own career and were successful at it, you're in the same category as Bush? And all of this matters more than what policies you have developed and support?

Sounds as though that person isn't very well-informed. There's a lot of that going around. :-(

.. :wtf:

Obama and Michelle are both lawyers and he's a Senator - they have LOTS of money.

But the Obama supporter doesn't seem to have a problem with that...and thinks Obama is somehow (in spite of that) better capable of speaking for the "everyman"

And the "talk is cheap" comment - Obama is the glittering orator isn't he? (yea talk is cheap, innit?)

Funny this Obama supporter doesn't think HIS talk is cheap - for all his dreamy promises.

Such ignorance and hypocrisy. Holy crap.

33. Edwards didn't rise out of poverty
his family was working class. They always had a home and secure income. And Obama grew up in a less defined situation, but he did NOT come from a privilged background.

The point is that the person in the OP saw Edwards' background as substantially more privileged than Obama's, and by your own admission that is simply not true, and ruled him out for that reason, which is ridiculous. Further, Edwards did not get a chance to attend Harvard, which opens many more doors than does attending a middle-of-the-road state school.

47. Obama earned his education. It was not handed to him.
And yes, I noted the ignorance of the person the OP refers to. I'm also noting a lot of ignorance about Obama on this thread. JE had no less of an opportunity to attend Ivy League schools than Obama. He could have applied just like Obama and he could have applied for scholarships and financial aid, too.

50. no one claimed otherwise. Please stop putting words in others' mouths.
What was said was that attending Harvard gave him an advantage as it does for all its graduates; that is a fact, and that fact is contrary to the perceptions of the person in the OP.

Unless you were on the admissions committees at Harvard at the times that Edwards and Obama could have applied, your speculation about who had what opportunities to be admitted there really isn't persuasive.

but to imply that he had more privilege in life than Obama is ridiculous.

though its true that as a black man, Obama did have more of an uphill battle. Racism is alive and well.
